    Not many replys from over eighties. I am nearly 82 years of age, still wear jeans and feel really good in them. One can almost wear anything with jeans. Even a classy blouse. Not everyone over 80 feels old. And 80 is not ancient, or is it. NOT FOR ME. Good video.

    What's wrong with getting older. Getting older is a blessing. I don't want to go back to my younger days. I am growing older gracefully and enjoying every minute of it. My kids are grown, I know who I am now and what I want , I am confident and at peace now. I like looking nice and well put together but u can have that by loving yourself and accepting who you are.

      I am 72 years old and from the start of the pandemic, I decided to stop coloring my hair. And, since I have frizzy hair, I decided to tie my hair in a bun. People have complimented me with my new hair style, including 75 year old husband and my 40 year old son. Someone did mentioned that God made our hair turn gray so that it does not frame our face and focus on our wrinkles, but, silver hair defuses the attention on our wrinkles.

    I love my black clothes! Sorry…they are not going anywhere! I am 68 and 4’10” with a bit of mature build and do where black quite often and most often receive compliments on my outfit. I usually avoid midi length dresses unless I am wearing boots, but I prefer to wear dresses and skirts maxi, just above the knee, and on rare occasions, a bit of a mini length. My favorite flat shoes are my ballet flats..they are quite comfortable and look chic on my tiny size 5 feet. Chunky shoes are definitely not flattering on me. I do have a few “vintage” pieces that just stand the test of time. As long as the fabric keeps it’s integrity and is clean and well maintained, it can be a true asset to an outfit. I don’t like fashion rules and find I have never been much of a conformist in this particular area….I wear that which makes me feel good and confident! I am also an artist and you how we are! Sometimes we want to be Rembrandt and then other times we want to throw caution to the wind and be Klimt, Pollock, or Picasso! Fashion is expressive and communicates to the world around us an aspect of ourselves, our mood, or sometimes even our fantasies. Life a journey of self discovery of all the amazing facets of who we are…and some of us like to do this through fashion! I don’t really view it as fashion mistakes. When my piano students strike a “wrong “ note or chord, I often encourage them to incorporate it into their music as a transitional note or improvisation. Sometimes that “wrong” note becomes the better choice as it gives unexpected interest and character to the piece. I love watching designer runway shows. They present the most outrageous, over the top, controversial fashion ideas and expressions for the mere purpose of showing off their creativity, vision, and artistry! What a glorious art form! Obviously, most not appropriate for wear outside of the runway…..it’s art…pure raw art! Maybe today I will don that vintage piece that may remind a stranger of a kinder and gentler time and bring back a special memory long forgotten.

    • @StylebySheila
      @StylebySheila  3 года назад +2

      Everyone is different and rules are more guidelines. Fashion is art and it's lots of fun if you treat it that way. I love to hear women talk about style as being part of their lives, as it seems style and fashion are for you.

    When people are said to look old or older it often comes with negative connotations. We all want to look GOOD for our age no matter what that is and some people are better at it than others that’s what platform such as this are helpful as well as informative. Nothing wrong in looking good or indeed age appropriate but times and fashion are changing. It certainly wasn’t appropriate for my mum to wear jeans in her 50s but now it is! 😊I’m not afraid of getting older I just want to look good for my age and with some help from professionals and friends I can achieve this. I think we all know what we are not comfortable wearing. I’m willing to shake things up a bit but I also know where I want to draw the line and that’s okay. Clothes are just one aspect of style, how we think and even our smile can make us look so much better. ❤

      Redheads or blondes look fabulous in "little black dresses" no matter the age. Just so long as it's not an everyday uniform. When we women wear it all the time, it gets to be boring looking. Or, you wonder why that's all the person wears! I remember that on a couple of women in their 60's when I was 18-20 years old. One of the real reasons for wearing all black though is we think it makes us look slimmer. Ah, we can't hide the fact we've gained weight. It still shows . . . unfortunately.

I have arthritis and can’t wear any heel whatsoever. I wear Birkenstock’s, Earth Shoes, clog style Crocs. I don’t wear makeup, never have. My hair is natural, brown with grey and reddish blonde. Agree that Clark's has excellent style options and they are definitely comfortable shoes. Disagree about wearing all black. Im a New Yorker -- we love our all black! May not work for everyone but it's definitely great for those of us who need a slimmer look. Re the hair, I would add the following tip: Many Caucasian newswomen go blonder as they age: Barbara Walters, Mika Brzezinski, etc. If blonde is not your thing, fine, but salt and pepper can look very chic. Avoid that "shoe polish black" look. It's often too stark on pale skin.

    Great Video Sheila! Here is a question for you. Black was a staple and although it still is I use lots of color with it. But here is the question. What do you recommend to women over 50 with long hair who want to and need to pull it back if you don't use a barrette?

    • @StylebySheila
      @StylebySheila  3 года назад

      When I said don't wear barrettes I meant the type that are used as an accessory rather than for function. They're very fashionable for young women right now - that type. When you pull your hair back use hair accessories that are meant just for that but don't really stand out. It's too bad I couldn't use photos here. :) I hope this helps

During the pandemic I have let my short hair (which has been turning grey -- really white -- around my face for years) grow quite long. I have used clear hair combs to keep my curly hair out of my face, and they barely show since my hair often covers them up. It has been really fun to change my hair style after over 40 years of pretty short curly hair. It is refreshing!

      However, jeans make my legs ache!
      So, for comfort I wear yoga pants.
      (dresses are not an option, I have some intermittent swelling in my legs and ankles)
      I wear my black foundation and then bring color into my blouses, jackets, sweaters, scarves, or earrings!
      Lots of beautiful colors!
      Sometimes we have to dress to accommodate pain from medical issues.
      But find a colorful way to do it and I still feel stylish!

      I disagree. I wear pants only for hiking and Yoga. For me, a skirt that is just below the knee and that flips out in its lower half is as young a look as you can get and also very comfortable. I have that style in many colors and feel great wearing any of them with a jacket appropriate for the occasion. When I wear pants, I definitely look older and frumpier no matter what the cut or style of the pant. Most importantly, we must feel good in what we wear and how it looks on us.

  • @katielove9932

    Some things you said are true and some of your ideas are not. You showed pointed shoes. That is a big No! No! Our feet are rounded not pointed. Anyone who wears pointed shoes of any type will suffer dearly as they age. The shoes will cripple their feet. If you don't believe me, talk to a podiatrist. Please don't patronize what can harm people.
    You talk about outdated clothes. This is the time to hang-on-to those outdated clothes and cherish them. They are of good quality and don't exist anymore. Especially, expensive and appropriate clothing. All one needs to do is add a pretty pin or brooch or a nice necklace to a beautiful suit jacket even if it's over 20 years old. Clothes today are thin, flimsy, cheap looking and transparent. Don't tell people to throw out good quality clothing that will most likely never exist anymore. So many people seem to be dressing too casual and sloppy. I will not take all of you advice. I do what's best for me and how I look in my clothing even if as you say, it is outdated.

    • @StylebySheila
      @StylebySheila  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching. My intention is to help. When it comes to footwear I know women first want to be comfortable and they also want to look good. I realize many women have problems with their feet and those women aren't going to wear a pointed - toe if it's uncomfortable. Also, there are different variations of pointed-toe shoes and there are also women who have worn pointed-toe shoes for many years with no problems. There are also women who have never worn a pump or a pointed-toe and still have problems with their feet. I agree, it is difficult to find good quality clothes but they do still exist. When you wear outdated styles you run the risk of being seen as being outdated overall. For some women this doesn't matter, but if you're still in the workforce, in business or you're concerned about your image, you don't want to appear that you're behind the times. Whether we like it or not we are judged based on our appearance. These tips are only suggestions. I also suggest women take what resonates and leave what doesn't. The beauty of life is we're all different and most of us are free to choose what we wear. 🙂

    I have flat feet that pronate and had surgery that failed. I buy excellent quality shoes, and shoes made for problem feet. I feel like I always look frumpy in a dress. I long to wear dresses again but it is very hard to find attractive shoes to wear with dresses. I buy Vionic, KURU, Orthodic, etc. Clarks are not comfortable to me, I cannot wear a heel, not a wedge, kitten, or low vamp. Some people have balance problems and can only wear flats, thank goodness I don't but the pronation won't allow me to wear even the lowest heal, and not all flats. What are your suggestions for us who can only wear flat, comfortable shoes with wide, rounded toes? Obviously, you have not had bad feet. I also have plantar fasciitis that acts up for months at a time. I would love your ideas. I am also 5'3", which makes it harder to look nice in a dress and flats.

    • @StylebySheila
      @StylebySheila  2 года назад

      Thank you for your comment. The most important thing is to feel good and wearing uncomfortable shoes certainly won't make that happen. I know there are women who have problems with their feet and can only wear certain shoes. I might have mentioned that in this video, if not, it was in another one. What to do? Again, this answer is in generalities because I don't know anything about you and we are all as unique as our fingerprints. Here are a couple of options: You can wear dresses that end at the knee or an inch above the knee - this is the most flattering length for flats. Or, wear maxi dresses. Dresses that touch the floor. I know you might think you can't do that because you're 5' 3" but long dresses will make you look taller. It's the dresses that end at the ankle that shorten. I am doing a Q and A video in the new year and I think this is a very good question that many women want answered. I will answer this question and give visuals as well as "If this, then that" type of info. So, stay tuned for that.
