    Thanks for taking the time to revisit this Scott, appreciate the comparison between the different systems.

    From my perspective, they all sound great. The tanz has a certain richness and rawness that none of the other units have, but he did kind of negate himself on the vermona. Shocked at how good the TR-8 held up, saying that as a proud TR-8 owner.

    • @wutangpaul

      Yep, still sounds sick.

    Thanks Scott, for a very welcome comparing! I love how the Drumbrute looks but it seems it does not sound as warm as the TR8 and the Tanzbar. I think the Tanzbar sound just a little better but it's twice the price in this comparing video...

    when i first saw the drumbrute i was pretty enthusiastic , but the more videos i listened to the more indifferent i became. the drumsbrute´sequencer is awesome, but to me the most important thing about a drummachine is sound and groove. when you started the tanzbär i was smiling and tapping my feet to the beat immediately ;-) the mfb tanzbär has an organic powerful bounce and is grooving like hell, yeah. tanks for the video.

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад +1

      herbert druschke I agree MFB sounds great in this video, but I also may have gotten a little lucky this time with it. Remember that with analog gear you have technically almost infinite settings so each of the machines can sound vastly different depending on who is playing them and how they are mixed at a given time.

    • @herbertdruschke503
      @herbertdruschke503 8 лет назад +2

      thats right scott. but i think each machine has its special "personal" character. saying this, depending what you have in mind one fits better than another. i have the vermona on my own (beside some other machines) but as you said, its not the best machine for ultra short hard attack kicksounds (for example). the tr-8 might be extremly versatile but look and feel is too awful to me (sorry). the drumbrute is a beauty and the sequnecer is awesome, however i m not convinced with the sounds. at this moment i am looking for the mfb tanzmaus. seems to be a bit inconvenient to handle but those sounds talk to me directly ;-) and yes, we who are addicted to drumcomputers are witnessing a golden age ;-)

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад

      herbert druschke I agree! The only sounds I'm still not really sure of on the Drumbrute are the hi hats, the rest of them sound very good imo. I don't like the look of the Aira gear either, very ugly imo, but I can forgive the TR8 because it is so versatile. I just wish they'd come out with more drum kits for it! That would be awesome!

    • @herbertdruschke503
      @herbertdruschke503 8 лет назад +1

      808/909/707/ and the 606 sounds....thats pretty much kits for the TR-8...probably they will feed the tr-8 with more sounds from time to time ;-)
      you seem pretty happy with the drumbrute. i will try to check the drumbrute in a shop, maybe i change my mind. greetings from germany.

    They all sound great! I love my DB!

  • @beskidwood

    Thank You!
    Drumbrute's kick has mild eq curve and it is placed where typical kick used to be in traditional records. And it is much easier to add "crisp" element than to remove it in post. So Arturia's product might be superior for recording music with it's 8 output channels, but if someone wants it to perform live shows, then perhaps separating kick and putting it through EQ effect or compressor effects might be the solution.
    Regards
    Marek, Poland

      You are probably right. I never could get the sounds I wanted out of it and ended up trading drumbrute and the TR8 for a TR8S. I really love the TR8S although I do find myself missing the TR8 simplicity sometimes. Been meaning to make a video about it but have not had time

  • @freelanderride
    @freelanderride 8 лет назад +1

    Thanks man, much much better to hear than first :) MFB is the king, but I like the Vermona too... I played with the DB and I like the polyrythm and the randomness mode. So for the price its good to have both units: Tanzbar and DB :) Greets from the Netherlands

      freelanderride I agree about the price of the DB. Not the perfect machine, but for the price it's hard to beat the value!

    Can someone do a comparative test of the DB with the RESONANCE filter active and turned above 50%. I keep seeing the filter bypassed in most RUclips videos. On mine I definitely notice more punch from kick 1 and 2.

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад

      Rafael Santos-Afan interesting. I will try this. The only reason I didn't think to add the filter is because it affects the whole mix rather than just one instrument.

    • @rsantosafan
      @rsantosafan 8 лет назад +1

      Scott Ferguson I don't really know if it's more "punch" that I perceive but, sonically there is a difference and it just feels right.

    great video... I might bite the bullet and cop this to run it through my console so people hear it... My brother has the Vermona drm mk3... I can tell you right now by just the build they are totally different... Whats better is subjective

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад

      Thanks. That's true! as I said in another comment, I think this video makes the Vermona sound bad, but it is pretty amazing and I can usually get it to sound great with enough tinkering.

    • @AveMcree
      @AveMcree 8 лет назад +1

      Tbh, I was about to get a Vermona drm over the drumbrute for the sake that if you have a midi sequencer like the beat step or AKAI mpd 232. You get a bit more for the cash in terms of separate filter sections etc. Plus, if you ever heard of Truss "50 locked Groove" he makes the DRM sound sexy (thru sampling in the Octotrack! Thanks for response

      Ave Mcree I'm not about telling people what they should do, but I think you will have fun no matter which you go with. :)

  • @MadelnMachines
    @MadelnMachines 4 года назад

    Are you using kick 1 or kick 2 on the Tanzbar? I'm really curious how the Tanzbar 1 vs Tanzbar 2 sound. The drumbrute might be better if it had better hats. The impakt sounds decent. I wonder if some distortion might bring the roland closer to the Tanzbar.

  • @richiebanscratch
    @richiebanscratch 8 лет назад +1

    First off thanks for the video. Thinking hard on the Brute so all info is useful. I think a more useful comparison would be individual sounds played in the same pattern with each parameter swept in turn to show the range of each one- or at least the parameters that the different machines share. For me that would show the strengths and weaknesses of each machine- and each drum sound on each machine- better than a fully programmed up beat where dynamics will get lost competing against each other.
    To be honest i'm kind of ok with the inevitable naysayers on the Drumbrute. Means if i decide to get one, i'll go second hand and get a bargain. Will definitely try it out in a shop either way first.

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад +1

      richiebanscratch good idea! I thought of something like that, but if I did it, would you prefer to have a video comparing one instrument type across all four machines, or would you rather I use one pattern and go through all the instruments on one machine at a time? This video was a lot longer and I did play with a lot more parameters, but I edited it out because it seemed off topic.

    • @richiebanscratch
      @richiebanscratch 8 лет назад +1

      Hi Scott, maybe compare one instrument type at a time across the different machines to get more of an idea of each machines strengths and weaknesses. ie im reading a lot of people not liking the hats on the Drumbrute,- getting the side by sides on each machines hats one after the other would make it easier to make these subjective choices or preferences and would be crazy helpful. Thanks a lot for considering this, i know it's a lot of work. Much appreciation for the vid and your response.

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад +2

      richiebanscratch that's a good idea. I tend to agree that the hats on the brute aren't the best, but they do have a unique character. I will start working on a video like what you described, however it will probably take several videos to get through all the sounds. It sound like a fun experiment though. I'm up for the challenge! :)

    • @richiebanscratch
      @richiebanscratch 8 лет назад

      Thats great Scott, I'll watch 'em! Think the hardest to get a comparison overall will always be the Vermona. A friend has one, amazing machine but very individual sound and quirky machine thats hard to compare with other drum machines. Have you seen Jomox have announced a new drum machine too- The Alpha Base. Spec looks great and his euro drum modules, some of which i think are incorporated into the Alpha Base sound fantastic. Think its price point will be far north of the Brute and whether it has the great sequencer options and ui of the Brute is another matter but Jomox have made some legendary gear over the years so its one to look out for.

    • @itchyvinyl
      @itchyvinyl 8 лет назад +1

      Scott Ferguson I agree. Every demo I hear - I can't stand the hihats. Very low pitched, and ringy with an exact pitch/tone. Kind of a deal breaker until I hear different.

      Billy Buchla the sequencer on the brute is a beast though. I wouldn't count it out completely!

    • @MrShegzok
      @MrShegzok 8 лет назад +1

      I was hoping for an update to the BSP rhythm track for different step lengths. Fingers crossed.

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад

      Billy Buchla I also like on the brute how you can add randomness and swing to individual instruments. I haven't had time to play with it much, but I think it would be interesting and an easy way to make some really cool stuff happen. As far as I know I can't do that on my BSP either.

    • @MrShegzok
      @MrShegzok 8 лет назад +1

      The BSP can only do random, or swing globally on the rhythm track. Sounds Interesting though. I'll just have to wait till I can try the brute in person. They haven't dropped in Liverpool yet. If you could just have one, which would you choose?

    • @ScottFergusonFRR
      @ScottFergusonFRR  8 лет назад

      Billy Buchla oh that is a bad question! So unfair! Haha
      I think if I had to pick only one I'd be forced to go wth the TR8 still. I make a lot of different styles of beats and it is very versatile and simple and fun, and it sounds pretty good. Analog drum machines are awesome but you have to play with them a lot to get them to sound the way you want them to. That being said, I do love that part though. Knowing that I dialed in a sound that maybe no other person has ever heard is exciting and can be very fun.

    Hi.
    Having the same volumes for each instruments / machine would have be better.
    It harder to compare if volumes are different.

      i would say fu, except this really helped. haha. the vermona i suspected could be a time consumer for me, and the tempest at the moment is out because Im just getting into the DSI pro2. at the same time would be a little much to take on... so the drumbrute is a good fit for the immediacy of that way I can drive it with outboard gear .. and im in austin so on top of what i have there are affordable hourly analog studios with outboard that i can take it to . i think that is where it will shine but in a way that is fast to play with, and i think its worth mentioning in that regard that the midi control center allows to prepare a lot of material with a latop for those situations, the tempest and the vermona would be sort of fiddly for me in that situ, since i would not be a better operator of those as you kind of mention, for someone who can dial them in faster im sure they are ideal...
