I’m 44. Metal head. I listen to old school late 80’s and 90’s death metal.
    Morbid Angel for example.
I dislike most new stuff. But every once in a while, I’ll hear a newer song I like. But it’s rare.

No, it has nothing to do with your age
    You're right
And it's very boring that 90% modern metal stuff sound like that

Over-compressed, over-distorted, same vocals etc. Even old bands, i.e., compare the way Black Sabbath sounds on "13" vs "Sabotage." Not to say all modern metal sucks but there just too much similarity.

It's not just you. I do think production plays a lot into it.

I prefer classic metal but it's exactly that...a preference. Just because I don't really dig modern metal doesn't mean I'm old or that modern metal sucks, its just one of those things.

Metal is for sure different now, and in my opinion just because music is well produced it doesn’t make it better

It's a two part problem... Low is obviously less perceptible... But also audio engineering is mostly digital these days. And sound design has changed as a result. Instrument's occupying certain frequency ranges use to be mixed to the front or the back of a speaker set up that surrounds you like your sitting in the middle of the band performing in a room. Or they might be mixed as if you are standing in the audience. From left to right, front to back accordingly... Up or down as well. Those things were achieved using audio engineering by putting different kinds of filters or effects on each contributing instrument to change the perception of where it is coming from in physical space. 3d sound design. Sometimes bass is so low that it feels like it's only registering in your body which is why they would layer things like drums in certain ways so that you're brain registers the drum hit even though it's so low you might just feel it in your chest. The work flow of doing all that probably hasn't changed much except that it's all digital audio, which speeds up the process a lot and costs way less to produce, but it will never be the same as standing in the room as the band is playing it. That actually started to become more of an issue when Chevelle was initially super popular. Seeing them live makes you realize they are much heavier than they sound on their albums. And that's always been the struggle for metal... How do we make this sound as brutal as it actually is during a live show.
There's also the nuance of the performer's playing something softer or louder which is hard to make sound right with just audio mixing. The dynamics of that dramatically effects how hard something sounds. I just found out about Sleep Token from a friend and they do an excellent job of composing music in such a way as to make heavy sound that much heavier. Their more like an orchestra than a strictly metal band. I'm not even sure what genres they are technically, which is nice in my opinion.
You should give some Tool a listen, the dynamics of their performance and composition is what makes their music so popular. They do a good job of writing in such a way as to sound good on a Casio jam box or in a stadium. And by all accounts are best experienced live. Music is suppose to be an experience, not just back ground noise. I think people have been sacrificing quality for quantity in this period of history where your relevance is measured in minutes and views instead of decade's of persistence.

Modern metal feels stripped down for the most part but there are still a few new bands that I listen to. Vitriol and Concrete Winds are both nasty
