Yes. However, depending on your system, we think it will be hard to tell a difference between an WiiM products when using the same DAC. It will depend on how revealing your system is if you can really hear a difference.
Short answer: NO. Long answer: NO. Answers apply to most of the streamers regardless of the price. How can digital data be transferred with better or worse quality? If we know the Pro Plus is already transparent to the source, how can this be 'better'. And presuming it's as good as the Pro Plus, how can it be less good than anything else?
It's all about how it will process the source. If you're using the internal DACs, the Ultra will sound better. If you're using an external DAC, there will probably be little difference that you can hear between WiiM products. But if you jump up to a higher end streamer from say HiFi Rose and use the same external DAC, it will sound better than the Ultra due to having better clocks and internals that process the information differently and lead to a better sound.
@@AudioAdvicewrong, if you're using an external DAC the streamer can not make a difference. USB and jitter has come a long way and unless something is really broken, it is 100% a non-issue.
In the late 1980s some of the Phillips CD players had 16 bit DACs that were essentially perfect in that any distortion and noise was inaudible. At this time there is no excuse for anybody to design and produce a streamer that is less than perfect sounding. I am watching this video on a Lenovo laptop computer using the headphone jack to drive my audio system. I have not yet found a streamer or DAC that sounds better than my Lenovo. They all sound perfect. Eventually I will buy a streamer simply to relieve my laptop of its current audio system duties.

Can it play wav and flac off a usb stick. For me, that’s important. Also the ability to plug in a usb hub at the back and still read all of the separate drives like the Cambridge cxn and azure series can. But this price point is making me seriously think about making a strategic switch in the future. Although I’m put off with having to switch iPhone apps as I have cxns in the bedroom, lounge, study etc. I’m kind of bought into the (very expensive) eco system but with the cost of living crisis, a future switch is not outside the realm of possibility. For me, a streamer MUST have a screen.
I'm disappointed that they have enabled the automatic room correction with a minidsp mic. I assume that using a friend's iPhone is going to result in a far inferior outcome given that the mic on the minidsp will be far better.
This and a Peachtree Gan 1 (powerdac) should be golden for anyone mostly just streaming and watching TV. Variable coax out to the Gan 1, trigger out to turn it on/off, Tv via ARC, room correction, sub out, a good streaming platform and a remote control to handle volume etc without faffing around with the phone all the time 🙂👍
Sounds as though you're interest here is not so much a review of the Ultra, but more as a shoehorn-video intended to up-sell hapless viewers into more expensive (higher margin) gear. All of which suggests, that whether it's this product, or the next do it all super-box down the line, finally pound a wooden stake through the heart of overinflated, high-end hi-fi gear, you won't be looking forward to it, or recommending it either.

If you have a revealing setup, you will probably hear a slight difference. However, the price of the Ultra is hard to beat and you may not even hear much of a change. For all you experts out there. I know there's a lot of you just by reading the comments lol. Would you connect powered speakers via analog (RCA) or digital (optical or USB) and what are the pros and cons of both? My powered Klipsch speakers have all those inputs. Thanks..
It would depend on the DAC inside the speakers and how it compared to the one in the Wiim. With the Klipsch, you should run analog from the Wiim. Hope this helps
Thank you. So the dac in the ultra must be better than the dac in the Klipsch powered speakers. Which volume would you recommend setting to a fixed level?
I was interested in the WiiM Ultra, both for its superior streaming software and especially for its Room Correction. Unfortunately, that function reportedly only works with Apple's iOS and for me that's a deal breaker.
I don't get all the talk of the wiim ultra sound performance it's really only the DAC section performance isn't it, as their is no amp in it. Also when compared to other high end streamers isn't wiims functionality and range of support just about the best out there?
There is not amp in it, correct. The DAC is upgraded from their other products. There are many other streamers with great functionality and range of support that are in competition from brands that we mentioned in the video.
This promises so much and WIIM are set to become the dominant supplier going forward. My issue is that I have digitised my music collection, either by copying from CD or purchasing MP3. These are held on a QNAP NAS. I would love to know how this would integrate with that, also seen issues in the UK with PlusNet routers. I also have many CDs and this sounds as if I might end up with a large number of devices to simply play my collection.
My Wiim pro with LPS was as good as Eversolo. How is the Ultra as streamer only, just using USB or coaxial digital out and external DAC, can it be as good as Eversolo?
It was very good as a streamer only for it's price. As good as Eversolo? It was quite close but we leaned towards the Eversolo. If that slight difference is worth the extra price will be a question that depends on your budget and your overall system.
Lack of usb out for DAC and balanced outputs are big misses. Why include phono? No one will be buying this for phono, take that out and add balanced output and USB output so an external DAC can set the timing/clock better than this unit, and you would have a winner that would obsolete the more expensive streamers. Edit: Some have pointed out that WiiM will in fact have usb out to an external DAC, similar to the firmware update for the WiiM amp. If so, that is amazing, and I will be buying the WiiM ultra myself. Appreciate the feedback.
I will be using the phono input to connect my Project Debut Carbon. As for MC feature since it’s done in the digital domain I bet an update can expand the gain settings for sure.

Doubtful as it’s not an HDMI out as far as I’m aware it’s only a HDMI audio in
It did not do that in our testing
I'd guess you could with Apple TV to TV then to Wiim

It has no arc capability, that's handled by the TV side of things
Missed opportunity IMO
@@phunny12000 - It is called an HDMI Input, and it does have ARC capability.
How do you think the DAC in the Wiim Ultra compares to the DAC in the Audiolab 6000a?
this is a pretty darn good question, I would really like to know the quality of both the DAC and the ADC.
They're both ESS silicon. The output stage, clocking and USB interface are the more important aspects. Streaming digital digital is the point.
Fantastic review gentlemen! Now, if WiiM will produce a standalone network streamer with high quality electronic bits, DSD/USB capabilities, outboard power supply along with their industry leading software, we will have a real winner! And if anyone can do that, it is WiiM! Let’s see it guys!
Thanks so much! That would be awesome! We'll be sure to pass it along to the WiiM team.
@@AudioAdvice Please do! I just popped for a Volumio Rivo, a standalone network streamer, along with a $600 Farad 5v linear power supply. I'm serious, I wish WiiM would build a unit like the Rivo. I would much rather spend my money with WiiM, as I am not a fan of the Volumio software. But, everything I have read and the videos I have watched, with a few weeks, the Rivo can compete with more expensive streamers. WiiM could easily pull this off.
@@michaelwright1602 yes! Totally agree
Do you need a preamp, or can you connect this directly to a power amp?
Connect it to a power amp.
You can connect directly to a power amp.
Great review. Will this play music files directly off of a USB stick plugged into the USB port on the back? Does the app have local storage file navigation to access these files? Thanks
Yes and yes.
I had the same question, does it play from a USB stick?
Yes.
Yes to both!
Will it play off of an android phone plugged in via USB? Acting as headphones. My smsl ao300 does and I love that feature. Thanks!
How does the headphone amp sound on this device? Seems to be a complete package if you have external amplification. The WIIM Pro internal dac was terrible. ProPlus seems to be a better choice but this device takes it to the next level.
This seems like a good value for the features.
Sure is!
If you stream to the Wiim Ultra with the Wiim going into an integrated amplifier with a DAC, would only the DAC in the integrated amp be used and the Ultra's would be bypassed? Or would that depend on how they're connected, RCA vs optical/toslink?
Exactly, depends on the connection. RCA would be the Wiim, digital out uses the DAC in the unit its going into. Thanks for watching

We did not test that aspect. It says the USB can be used to access a stored library. But your CXN sounds a lot better to us.
I'm disappointed that they have enabled the automatic room correction with a minidsp mic. I assume that using a friend's iPhone is going to result in a far inferior outcome given that the mic on the minidsp will be far better.
Why would that be disappointing? It's necessary to have a good measurement mic.

As a streamer only, does ultra sound better than pro or proplus? Using same external dac in both comparison
We think it will be hard to tell the difference if you're using the same external DAC.
However, if you jump up to higher end streamer and use the same DAC, you will most likely hear a difference. But probably not between WiiM products.
@@AudioAdvice so in other words if you compare a wiim ultra as a streamer only to say an eversolo dmpa6 only as a streamer both using the same external dac the eversolo would sound better since it is a more expensive unit? Or do i have to go higher in price to hear a difference?
If you have a revealing setup, you will probably hear a slight difference. However, the price of the Ultra is hard to beat and you may not even hear much of a change. It's really when you start to jump into much higher units is when the streamer only will make it sound much better.
