Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reaincarnation is an anime by studio Bind, based on a Light Novel by Rifujin na Magonote. Mushoku Tensei season 2 is currently airing as of the Summer 2023 anime season.
Mushoku Tensei is one of the most acclaimed isekai, and for a good reason. In this Mushoku Tensei Analysis I go over the way Mushoku Tensei explores its themes of personal growth and redemption.
As not only one of the best Isekai, but one of the best anime out there, Mushoku Tensei is capable of showing us the value of letting your characters bemorally layered.

From volume 1 alone, the purpose has always been stated in the novels in one of the most reoccurring lines in the series (this will be out of context, so no spoilers here),
"If I lived in this world, I could do all those things, too. After all, this was a place of high fantasy, one that didn’t obey the same rules of common sense as my past life. I could live as a typical person, doing the typical things for this world. Where I stumbled, I would get back up, dust myself off, and forge onward... I could finally live life right."
"I know I have to grow up right away. And in order to do that, I’ll have to make a bunch of mistakes, grieve over them, and change-slowly, gradually. I’m sure that’s how you had to do it too, so I’ll do the best I can.”
"Many things had fallen into place, with a great deal of pain and a great deal of joy along the way. I’d repeated horrible mistakes along the way, but it wasn’t over. No matter how much I screwed up or got things wrong, it wasn’t the end. I still had a lot of life to live in this world. And that’s what I was going to do: live to the fullest, so that no matter when I died, I’d have no regrets."
“You will…lead a life that’s…different from mine… You’ll succeed…and fail…just like you always have. You’ll reflect…on your mistakes…and regret them too…”
And, honestly, it's a message that never fails to get me going when I feel like giving up. Mushoku Tensei is a reflection of life and those that try to live it properly and without regrets. It is beautiful. Very beautiful.
Its a very "do it so you wont regret it" approach to motivating you, but it definitely works, I find it a lot more genuine than the more common "just believe in yourself".

Great comment. I like to point out the entire title of the anime too in Japanese is not simply “Jobless Reincarnation”, but rather is “異世界行ったら本気だす” that translates roughly as “If I go to another world, I’ll give it my all.”
The entire theme is about living life to the full and doing your best to not repeat the mistakes you’ve made in the past, and even if you do, you can still pick yourself up and move forward.
I love the books and I can’t wait until volume 25 comes out. It really is some of if not the best fiction I’ve ever read.

Yes, for gods sake YES. At least someone finally said that mushoku tensei criticism stems from frustration of people wanting to self insert into MC and feel OP and good about saving girls and being praised and whatnot, but insted met with deeply flawed character who cant change himself overnight just because he has new life. I hate this shit so much. People insulting actually goodwritten character just because they can jerk off imagining them in his place. The fucking IRONY of it.
MC is not you, it doesnt fucking matter whether what he does is morally good or bad, what matters is what kind of story this is and what are points it is making.
I think most people do it because it's honestly fun to consider the what if scenarios that come from imagining yourself in that situation. But whenever the character is incredibly flawed you are going to fall either into the trap of either defending their bad behaviour, or resenting the series for making him that way, because in your eyes the character is an extension of how you experience the series.
Or else, they sometimes see themselves in Rudeus and hate that lol.
That is the risk with flawed character, it could be a mirror to your own soul.

The problem with Mushoko is that it tries to show "MC is good" when his action doesn't reflect on it. If the show continue to proudly say it's a pervert show about a perverted character trying to live his fantasy, I can tell you everyone would just roll their eyes and ignore another male fantasy poundering anime.
Ok, lets assume that its all pervert fantasy show, then why does he fail every single time he is doing something bad like assaulting eris or being too pushing with sylfie? Why does he have a past that keep haunting him in his new life for as long as he keep making same mistakes? Why does he feel so insecure and suffer for years?
The main point of this story is that no matter how bad things are, for as long as you are willing to change yourself there is a future ahead of you. It may not be a easy or fast journey, it may be full of mistakes and regrets but you can change. And i think that for many people that watch power fantasy to escape their problems its a very important message.@@Italsik
It actually is so annoying how the average person who watches the show doesn't have enough media literacy to be able to consume it properly. People who do understand what the story of MT is all about (and so much more) do exist, it's just a bit of needles in a haystack kind of effort to find them.
One such channel is Psyculturists, though his analysis is more I leaning towards psychology discussion and analysis, I find his content very insightful and entertaining in its own way.

It’s a tough anime to get into if you’re not a fan of Rudeus. Personally I do like him but the controversy makes it difficult to recommend it to people since most people aren’t even gonna try.
It just means that they've probably had a privileged life..... or are in self denial.

There's more to it than just 'keep trying', remember every time Rudeus has pulled himself out of his stuck place it was either by caring for someone else or being forced out by others!
First Roxy helped him by showing him a different side of people when she dragged him out of his safe space.
Then he had to think about Rudjerd & Eris as he struggled through the Demon Continent.
The barman & Rudjerd helped him reconcile with his father.
Then Aisha and Lilia became the focus of his efforts.
When he was at his lowest point it was the fact that his mother Zenith was still lost that forced him out of his 'cave' and to keep on trying.
When Sarah was lost and in danger it was his desire to help her that forced him to act and brought him closer to the group.
After 'disappointing' Sarah it was Soldert who dragged him out of his funk.

The moral of the story isn't self reliance and self motivation, it's that other people matter and while they can cause our deepest suffering they can equally help us out of it.
That's a great point, I should have definitely explored that more in the video.
The shortened "keep trying" is more of a thumbnail thing but the general point I wanted to make is that you have to keep improving upon yourself, but I should have definitely talked more about how that interacts with the people around him.
I still think there is a self reflection and becoming a better version of yourself element at the core, but you are absolutely right, there's definitely great messaging regarding how working on your relationships with the people around you is a big part of becoming a better you.

I first read the novels in high school as a somewhat smart but quite lazy kid, and seeing that past life rudy was a "gifted kid" made me cautious to not be like him. In his second life he humbled himself, not get complacent with any achievement, and keep striving to better himself, and he always pick himself back up after failures. That's how i strived to be and now that i'm a working member of society, that drive might have calmed down a lot, but i still love how this story has affected me since back then

Mushoku Tensei is actually one of the most subtle stories I've ever read. This was really clear after rereading and watching OtakuSpirit analyze each chapter. The anime focuses on Rudeus and cuts a lot, so they can only portray the blatant. But the novels, holy shit the novels. If you think the characters are deep, know that they’re only ¼ of what their novel counterparts are. And it’s all because of subtleties.
In the novels, the climax wasn’t Eris leaving Rudy, though that’s part of it, but it was Eris’ POV, which is a common payoff in many of Mushoku Tensei’s arcs, giving POV of someone to recontextualized the situation. In that POV, Eris completely changed the context of all the actions she’d done up to this point. It was so subtle and sneaky. But now all those actions become not out of her bright personalities, but out of her fear of abandonment because of how she was raised and underestimated by everyone around her. This is not in the anime. Every action of Eris becomes recontextualized in that one chapter. And there’s so many of these moments from Zenith to Roxy to Paul.
But I think the best example of Rifujin’s subtle writing is the fact that the first two seasons are all setup… They might as well be prologues. Each character introduced, each funny scene, each character development, each cool moment, are in service of the last two seasons. You might think “Haha funny slice of life scene” until it becomes a foundation of what is to come.
I do have criticisms for the anime and the novel. The novel had some weird pacing issues in two of its volumes (which is impressive considering that there’s 26). But the anime had really strange directing decisions, like creating anime-only Rudy pervert moments that just makes him look like a psychopath than he already is. There’s also important cut contents in the second season which they could actually include had they cut a few SOL scenes or put it as an aside or a monologue. But none of these criticisms will be about subtlety. Because Mushoku Tensei is a subtle series, hidden in a veneer of adventure and slice of life. The theme of growth is just the secondary theme after all… A secondary theme. There’s a much more important theme that it built up since episode 1, that it’s still building up in the second season, which it will payoff once everything is in order. The fact that people have yet to pinpoint that theme until its recontextualization later means that Rifujin is very sneaky and subtle in his execution of the story. If there’s one thing I can give Mushoku Tensei, it’s that.
You are so right on that, as I say first thing in the video "There are a handful of stories I keep coming back to (...) they always have something new to offer, another detail, another layer beneath the surface." The story is filled with details and subtleties, both times I talk about subtlety, I am referring to how it presents uncomfortable situations "You are presented things with all the subtlety of a Truck running over a 30-year-old shut in. The story doesnt trim the uncomfortable parts and thats what makes the message come across as being honest. (...) its approach on sensitive topics might be lacking in subtlety." Because while most stories make the character pause a second then act bashful, MT lets you know the exact thoughts that crossed his mind in that moment, so it goes from "maybe he was thinking XYZ" to you being hit directly with his exact thoughts.
I have little to add to everything else youve said, the novels introduce different POVs very early, the second chapter is from Lilia's POV, and alternate POVs are very present all throughout. And the set ups are just phenomenal, as I said "I know it feels like I keep repeating myself with the 'will be important later' but that is how it feels to rewatch this show. Most things have lasting consequences." Rifujin is a very detail oriented author and the way he develops a story is definitely subtle and I'd say even more so "natural". I'm also probably only alive now because of how the story helped me process my own self-loathing and desire to permanently give up when I first started reading the WN in 2015 in search of some power fantasy escapism.

It's impressive to see how the character has grown from a deranged and twisted mentality to someone who takes accountability for himself and always strives to improve. Life is never easy, and it's important to keep moving forward, even when it throws punches at you. Holding yourself accountable for your actions and continuously trying is the key to success. I like the fact that the journey to be better is true for all characters in the show we follow. Non of them are perfect but they all at some point recognize their flaws and work to be better, to be worthy of being along side someone or even to simply hold true to the ideals they claim to stand by. I think its easy to point out rudeus's journey but all of our characters that we follow work toward bettering themselves after either coming ro realise their flaws or having their flaws smacked in their face. I think zenith and roxy may be my favorites here in this regard too
It's a theme that extends to every character in the cast, Ruijerd and Eris even in the first season alone are a great example of the same type of arc being set up and explored.

The most refreshing thing about Mushoku is that the characters are actually people and not one dimensional stereotypes, like, don't get me wrong, there are a lot of stereotyped characters, but that isn't ALL they are.
Yeah, even when it plays on tropes, it's developed far beyond what you'd consider a "trope".
I think part of that is the author was the one to make a lot of the tropes that make up Isekai but the difference is no matter how much mass produced Isekai copy him, they can’t replicate the care and layers he puts into his character beyond the initial mold

The prologue to the story says it all.
About Rudy we learn the following.
He is a gross fat NEET, so estranged from society due to trauma that he didn't even attend his parents funeral. But he's not a bad person at his core, he did try to save someone's life even at the risk of dying.
About the writing we learn that it isn't afraid to portray things as they are, no matter how ugly or uncomfortable.
Rudy dies in that traffic accident, but not instantly, like you'd expect from a story. The truck rams into him breaking some ribs, but because of how fat he is he survives the initial impact, until he gets popped like a balloon, right between the front of the truck and a wall.
Rifujin's ability to set things ups is phenomenal. He always plants seeds that grow over time and you get to understand why it was there in the first place. It's one of those things where you could describe things as "30-year old shut in gets run over by a truck", if all you focus on is the "what happened", but as soon as you add the "how it happened" everything starts clicking.
i watched the anime and that made me want to read the web novel i finished that and now im part way through the light novel and its always nice to find someone who got the same thing out of a story that you did im glad you enjoyed it as much as me and great video

It is probably one of the most realistic isekai out there, imo
I think the real problem with this show is that it took so long to come to animation which put it in a position where it became the anime that used all isekai tropes rather then the show that created all the trips we know just like how battle royal was the inspiration for the hunter games but people see battle royal as the Asian knockoff of the hunger games. The anime is absolutely amazing and yes it has all the tropes but that's because this manga created them it was so good that it became main stream along with series like sao and re zero which followed the same far with re zero actually holding its identity with old and new fans.
I do agree it took a long time for it to come to animation, leading people to think it was just playing on old tropes, however I don't find it an apt comparison to Battle Royale. It didn't pioneer modern isekai, Re:Zero and many others precede it.
It came out along with when the modern isekai started getting popular and became the most popular among them, so it was a matter of becoming popular first, not of actually creating those tropes.
I love this anime and i'm glad you see it from this point of view.The reason why the story is so good it's because it still holds a sense of realism. Being reencarnated doesn't make the mc a better person or stronger, this anime shows the struggle it is to become one. And even though people don't realize this, most enjoyable storys have a flaw or two. If you see the spectrum of good and bad isekai anime, you'll mushoku is good, because the main character isn't a saint from the start like in other isekais that the character is already end game material, these are often on the bad side of isekai.
Yeah, it's a very grounded take on isekai. And I love how it portrays growth. I've seen a lot of isekai at this point, and very few come close. I have it at the top along a couple others.
Mushoku Tensei is not a redemption story. As a fan of MT, I dont think its an insult to say its not a redemption story. Its not a bad thing at all. What calling it that does is mislead people into assuming things like "Oh, the story is about Rudeus trying to stop being a pervert" and it causes people to react harshly for a false narrative. And you could say he does redeem himself in other ways, but even then I dont think people are gonna accept what he does in later seasons no matter how much better he's gotten. The series would never have garnered as much hate if Gigguk hadn't popularized the idea with Mushoku Tensei. He didn't know at the time since back then the anime hadn't even aired, he was just watching the trailers for the anime and thought "Oh its a redemption story".
Again, its not a bad thing. Mushoku Tensei is more of a reincarnation story than one of redemption, and you can see how the two are closely similar. Rudeus is not beholden to the morals of our world, but because its falsely known as a "redemption story" there are a lot of people turned off by it because they're trying to view it from our morals.
You're absolutely right, maybe I should have avoided using the word redemption. When I call it so I more so mean he is redeeming himself in his own eyes, as I've said "He regrets how he wasted his former life so he wants to make sure he will do it right this time.", he doesn't need to fit into anyones elses perception of what is good, I think the point is that he is trying his best to be better, so he won't regret not trying.
I like the distinction of calling it a "reincarnation story", I think that's a a more neutral word that still conveys he is making decisions in this life based on the regrets of his former life, I think I'll use that from now on instead. Thanks for your comment!
I personally call it a Self-improvement story. I noticed from peeps when they are told this is a redemption story, they expect Rudy to transform into some morally correct person and that's simply not his goal. He just wants to live his life right this second time around with no regrets which is what he does currently when we see him do things that his past self couldn't do (i.e. Getting out of the house with Roxy and Him and Paul's reconciliation).

Not a bad video, but at 4:51 you say "All of this was just the prologue... " That's a big mistake on two levele. First, because it isn't a prologue. There is an actual chapter that is the prologue, and it tells the story of Eartheus right before being turned into pancake by Truck-Kun. That's the actual epilogue of the story. The second level is what you are probably thinking about, that after this even the story actually gets started, but that's also wrong. This is the story of Rudeus' life. It starts with his birth and it ends where everybody's life ends. That is why the final moments of Eartheus are the prologue.
From the minute he is born, Rudeus is fighting against his traumas and his insecurities, the big villains of this story. The fight is already on.
This isn't a criticism of your vid i enjoyed your vid this comment is just a response to people who hare on the series because it has something they don't like in it:
My whole thing is, you can dislike mushoku tensei because of the unsavory topics and issues in the series, im am ok with that my problem is when people hate th8s series and call it vad when it makes them feel uncomfortable when it was supposed to and show that rudeus was flawed and due to his trauma couldn't fit normal moral standards because it degraded him over time, and that the world he's in is a medieval setting so it has a lower moral standard in the first place so other things that are unacceptable now weren't then, thats pure human nature. Stop hating a show for taking place in a setting that is of a lower moral standard because in this time frame the moral standard it has was lower at that time.

I believe that the point of the story is no one starts out good period
there are some people who are better than others but at some point even those people will have more than one ugly side of themselves that they're have to face.
Everyone is capable of being selfish and self-centered and everyone is capable of making mistakes.
Everyone also has the opportunity to do better and to go forward in life and face the truth of who they've been and what they want to be.
And no one is perfect while doing it
Because many in today's society don't read they lack comprehension as far as situations and in literacy.
They have a hard time understanding the story because they don't regularly immerse themselves in different forms of Fictional literature.
That's very well put, everyone his a different shade of morally gray, no one is only good or only bad. Everyone is going to falter at times, but they all have the chance to attempt to do better next time.
I think there are definetely some composition choices in the show that lead people to think it's trying to do something else, but outside of that there is definetely a big misunderstanding of the story based on preconceptions of what a story should or shouldn't be.
@@Ayvhel Rudy's character is raw. He's not hiding who he is. It doesn't matter if the "Him" at the moment is good bad or ugly. Most people can't handle an extremely realistic personality in their fantasy entertainment. It's a mirror of themselves that they don't want to talk about. So they will pick out certain traits in this person and dismiss everything else That's going on in the story. There are a couple of things that maybe they could have done differently but it is what it is.
These are also the same people who will excuse Shigeraki's and Doby's behavior from my hero academia and they are Psycho and have no remorse.
The same people Will never forgive Endeavor for being a jerk hoe to his family even though he admits to the wrong doing and tries to change.
I see it as the same effect of comparing mineta and hisoka from HxH. Hisoka is definitely more of a degenerate but the perception on them is the other way around, because one is charismatic and charming while the other isn't.

There's such a thing as "good cringe" like 1 example form Made in Abyss; episode 10 which is quite an intense and uncomfortable episode, but its good and then there is bad cringe like the _overly sappy_ stuff we commonly see in anime and then there's the straight up perhaps-should-be-illegal side which is the "wish fulfillment for PEDOPHILES" cringe.
I'm not saying something retarded like "anything depicted in a story is a promotion of that thing", but it's _possible_ that the purpose for some of the things in _here_ are to satisfy creeps and even if that is only the _secondary purpose,_ and there's _aCtUAlLy a dEePeR mEaNiNg,_ *I don't like it.*
That is a fair point. As I say in the video, it's fair to not like it, especially for how it presents certain things, which can either be seen as "they are placing you in the mind of rudeus" as a form of characterization, or as you've said "they are doing it to satisfy creeps" as some sort of sick wish fullfilment. I'd say either can be substanciated by the content. I have given it the benefit of doubt, but it's fair for anyone not to. I myself have avoided Made in Abyss for the same reason based on things I've seen from it, even with friends of mine defending the show for its merits, it makes me unconfortable still.
@@Ayvhel on Made in Abyss I’ve heard the manga sexualizes the child characters quite a bit, but the show does cut most of that shit out so that’s it’s digestible for a wider audience.
I actually feel recommending that show to people, I do not feel comfortable recommending Jobless Reincarnation, even though it’s a quality anime.
Made in Abyss has so many dark and interesting themes that you don’t see explored very often but then the mangaka decides to spoil it with hints of CP… I don’t understand it.
There’s an ocean of sexual loli/ incest content out there, I feel it’s just a way for a community of weirdos to get off on the closest thing to CP without getting arrested, sometimes putting it in a really good story like Made in Abyss (WTF?)
Yeah it's quite concerning. I wish a lot of stories would have re-cuts to remove certain aspects, or that the editors who are supposed to determine what's suitable for consumption or not would look into it. Sadly it's everywhere. And not just in anime.
The amount of American shows set in highschool that are highly sexualized is also very concerning, although at least the actors aren't kids so it's not as bad, but conceptually it's still pushing it.

Mushoku Tensei is one of the few that have characters with many flaws and depth, but they actually grow and its relatable to the real world, Rudeus still a pedo tho I ain’t ever forgiving him tho
He makes me pause a few times every episode and wish I could punch him. As I said, it's a frustrating watch, but I think it's worthwhile still.

I had discussions with a lot of people who hate mushoku tensei and cannot understand why it is liked so much.
The only reason being, that Rudeus is a lolicon (Pedophile).
You cannot argue with them. No matter what.
But they support the brutality, rape and anything about berserk.
The morals of these people are abnormal i am telling you.
While Rudy is morally corrupt, so are many other character's in fiction who aren't percieved as such and I think it's due to being more charismatic. Hisoka (HxH) is generally beloved character for example. I find it similar to how Mineta (MHA) in percieved by the shonen comunity in regards his perversion in comparison to characters like Jiraya (Naruto) or Todo (JJK).

Pretty much had a verbal fight with a friend over this show. He called it the worst show and that it’s just a run of the mill Isekai like everything else but worse. And I honestly just couldn’t let him get away with that. But every reply of his was of how bad things happen in the show and how Ruddy is not a good person. But that’s the best part of the show, because it’s a fantasy world with realistic people in it. Poole who just do good do not exist! Even Jesus himself sinned. Honestly you have to be very closed minded to just hate this show and I can’t deal with people like that.
Honestly I hope you've made up with them, although I relate to how you feel about how it's often discussed, I think "bad things happen" or "character is a bad person" are very akward points to try and make because you are assuming stories should be a certain way, instead of embracing how they can represent different concepts and ideas.
If they were trying to portray him as his old scumbag self, I think they still failed. Even if he's to be a better person over the course of it.

While his real thoughts are like "just give it to me you bitch" or "you're a weakling, you don't matter", you see Rudeus as a caring and empathetic person. So which is it? Because the former is how he thought like when he was a NEET. Is Rudeus just a facade? It's all disingenuous to me.
i think you are just assuming he got gifted them like nothing happened he had to learn the language first and then practice magic because he worked at it for his entire childhood even during the demon continent arc the manor arc he always perfects his magic control with figure making since it is the fastest way to exhaust his mana the grueling amount of work he puts into his craft is unseen most of the time becasue it is boring
