I picked up the Levity 60 and the reason being that a fullsize Counter Assault Bear Keg will fit into the bottom of it in a horizontal position and sits perfectly at the small of my back and therefore can not be felt against my back at all. For this reason I love this pack and it is my go to pack if I need to carry 7 days of food for two people. Otherwise, I drop down to a frameless pack as part of a UL set up. Also, the Z-Packs zippered belt pouch slips onto the Levity belt and secures quite well and I have had no complaints with it. I comfortably carry 30 lbs with the Levity (18 lbs food & Bear Keg plus everything else) and have been impressed that the minimal padding has been so comfortable. I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth since I own this pack and have been happy with it. Thanks for your honest product reviews and quality content!!
On the osprey website they say its max load capability is 25lb , thats why i like more Osprey Exos 58, cuz i can carry more weight, and has more durable fabric, i like balance between Light and durable
Yeah, I don't understand brands and leaving out the hip pockets, when there is a hip belt. Almost every person I've seen review these bags adds some kind of front pocket to it. It's clearly a useful thing. Even the most minimalist person wants their chapstick, snack, and cell phone in reach.
Scott Gephart thank you. I do have gear sent to me often, but you can always be certain that you’re gonna get my honest opinion and feedback regardless of what it is. Makes no sense to mislead people into bad gear if it’s truly bad gear. 👊🏻
I used the Levity45 last year through the entire AT. And I have to disagree on the side pockets, they are definitely the star of the show. They fit soo much and it’s way easier to reach vs say the zpacks. The larger Gatorade bottle is perfect.
What did you pack there? I have Levity 60 and for me it was dificult to put tent and water bottle there when the main pack was full. I try to find how to pack it so it will work for me. I like the back pack, it is very comfortable.
One question please: would you get this pack, the Gregory or the Exos??? Although you are criticizing the levity, I see from your other videos that you've kept it... thanks.
I’m sure someone else haha said this, but that water bottle pocket is designed so you can jam the bottle in while wearing the pack and push it backwards so it would sit the same way as if you put it in through the top
I was looking at this Levity, the Optic and the Exos at the end of last year for my new pack. Wanted to go lighter than my Gregory Baltoro 65. Felt that the Levity was too ultra light and wasn’t going to be comfortable if I felt like carrying a little more weight. The Optics lumbar pad felt off to me for my body shape. I went with the Exos. I have taken it out a ton this year. Really love the pack.
I love this pack! I’ve put a good 400 miles on it and the one downside is the side pockets. I just use a smaller smart water bottle and your elbows won’t hit them. If osprey just made the side pockets a little more elastic so you could still put gear in them without a big hassle like it is now this pack would be perfect for me. I also use zpacks hip belt pockets on mine and it works good.
the first normal human review, a person who has actually used the thing, it is extremely unpleasant to listen to obviously false reviews filling the space for the purposes of public relations. Thank you for your feedback🙏👍🖐🏻🙌🏻
I have the Levity 45 and personally I don’t have an issue with fitting stuff in that large pocket, even with the main pack relatively full. I place my Z seat and water filtration, along with layers as I shed them. It’s important to remember that Osprey rates this pack up to 20 lbs. It’s true that you can go over that by a bit, but in terms of optional function this pack is for people who are either true ultralight base weight or striving toward it. I’m still fairly new to this pack, but I find that I need to basically cinch the load lifters given how much the pack sits off your back to accommodate the venting pocket. I also am conscious to put my heavier stuff close to the body around the middle of the pack. This helps make your load feel a little more close to you, as opposed to pulling back and away from you if that makes sense. I certainly wouldn’t want to load two litres of water into that large pocket that’s for sure. Speaking of water, I typically hike in areas with plenty of water sources, so one thing that really helps with this pack (and UL in general) is to carry only a 700ml smart water bottle. Huge weight savings right there, and I find that if I stuff it into a side pocket top first it is both easier to insert and also (if you push it down so that the pocket covers it) doesn’t hit your arm when you walk. Aside from a bottle holder, which I don’t totally love, this is the best way in my opinion to manage water with this pack. If I really needed to carry more I’d place it within the pack close to the body.
I've got this pack. The side pockets work much better if you stuff two 700 ml water bottles in each pocket (thru the side-slit), instead of trying to stuff in a single 1 liter bottle. And I like that the brain is permanently attached; IMHO it doesn't flop around on you like removable ones will. It's also fairly low volume as brains go, so it doesn't tend to get in your way.
In comparing and researching the Osprey Levity vs. the Gregory Optic, on paper the Gregory won out because of the stretchy mesh pockets, hip belt pockets and removable lid. Great review. You confirmed my decision! Cheers.
bertman4 I never got the chance to try on the Osprey. I ordered 2 optics. A small and a medium. No one had them in stock locally. The medium carried so damn well. I now love it. Sorry Osprey. Haha
I already got the Gregory Octal instead of the Osprey Lumina. So glad to notice the reasons to confirm that choice! Yay! I love Gregory although I got a big volume in case I carry things for kids. I wish that I had gotten a smaller volume because I headed for lighter gear choices even as a newbie in hopes to stay caught up to my kids! LOL! Although I adore those Waymarks my back is particularly favoring the comfort from the Gregory Brand. Even if I just need a day pack I will sinch that big boy in just carry water and day hike items with a happy back.
Yeah I kind of agree with a lot of your negatives. I still think it is by far one of the most comfortable packs out there and that lifetime warranty keeps me comping back. But now that I've had both the Levity 45 and Exos 58 side by side for about a year - I really, really wish Osprey would just put the same user-friendly and versatile design characteristics of the Exos onto the fabric & frame of the Levity and call it done.
Hello, which is the maximum weight you carried whit this rucksack? The owner's manual tells the load range is 5-20 lb, 2-9 kg and for my is too little! In a daily hike I can carry 9/10 kg in a 32 l. rucksack, so I want to buy something bigger to stay outside more days but I need ta carry more weight... and I'm not sure Levity 45 is right for me.
Took mine on a trip through the Adirondacks. Tried to be careful with it, but I managed to put a hole in one of the side pockets going down Saddleback. Then again, it's impossible to hike the Daks and come out unscathed.
I do like the front (back?) facing side pockets. They have them on my backpack. It's easier to reach when walking for me. The pockets are stretchy though, so you can fit your bottle in however you like it. I also don't get the widespread disdain for the brain.. Maybe it's cause I like organization, but I like the compartments. I would just have to replace them with stuff sacks. Also I like the position it's in. I feel like it keeps some things, like sunglasses and water filters, away from the bigger heavier things and since it's on the top it's very unlikely that I'm going to drop my pack in a way where it lands brain first. I get why it's not for everyone, but it seems to have become a thing that no one is into anymore. Maybe I am a freak of nature.
Use the Osprey water system instead of bottles. It's great, fits more water than a bottle, it's easy to take out and put in and it allows for easy drinking while walking. Also, I'd not want a removable top. It's one major reason why I settled for this that it wasn't removable. They never stay in place when they're removable, IMO. The pocket on the top fit a lot more things than you think too which is great. I don't pack anything that isn't absolutely necessary in the outer pockets (water filter, sitting mat, rain poncho and a sweater and a windbreaker). The thing is, if you can't put half your pack in your outer pockets you pack the bag more sensibly and the weight distribution is better, so I can't fault them for that decision. I prefer using a fanny pack because it gives me more options. I can leave my bag and still carry chap stick and such with me, something I couldn't if I only used belt pockets. I would have used a fanny pack regardless for this reason so I prefer hip belts without pockets. I have a small upper body but the Levity fits me perfectly which is not something you can count on as a woman. One issue I have with almost all other bags is the edge that almost all bags have at the bottom. The Osprey bag don't, thanks to the way the frame is constructed and the mesh. It makes it super comfortable if you have the back shape I as a woman has. I also like the shoulder straps that are really soft. I think it's a well thought through bag that is practical without compromising the comfort. I love it to bits and can't imagine using any other bag now.
I have the Levity 60 and it has been perfect for my 12 to 16 lbs base weight. I agree that the pockets are not perfect, but I have a clip on the belt where I carry my water bottle (shoulder injury makes it difficult to reach back anyways) and that is a none issue. With the 60 I have generally too much space and the outside pockets are not restricted by the stuff in the pack...and it weighs only about an ounce more. Also, I am a devout bum-bag user (thrupack) and the belt system on this pack gets out of the way of my bag...but I also added a zpacks belt pouch for my camera and it works just fine. The only reason I would swap out this bag is if I were to find a sub 16 oz that carried as well...and I haven't found that yet.
The Exos has that same style of side pocket. I use the compression straps to hold my water bottle about 2/3rds down so the bottom of the pocket is empty, and I keep my phone, camera, and snacks in that void under the bottle. I like it. Took some getting used to.
The Atmos was my first pack and the absolute worst thing about it is the side pockets. I can't imagine someone designing them and thinking they did a good job!
I bought Levity 60 Large for camping trip with may 4 years old son. I must say it is wery comfortable pack for me. I am 6´4" or 191 cm and it fits me very well. I must agree on the cons of non stretchable side pockets. It was wery frustrated to me that I can not load them after I filled up the main compartment. It was wery hard to put anything in there. Even if I have small things there It was hard to put my hand in it to reach to the bottom. Also I was afraid to forcefully shove a bottle in it becous of the lightweit fabrick. Also when I did not fill the main compartment those otside pockets was very loose so if I lay the backpack on the ground I felt like small items can fall out of there. There was not enough tension to hold them inside. I was pleasantly surprised with wery good water replency of the back pack. And also the ventilation worked very well. I hope Ifound some ways arround the issue with outer pockets becouse the backpack is very comfortable and it is pleasent to wear it. Even with equipmnet and food for two.
I wouldn't consider myself an "experienced" backpacker. But when I bought my Osprey Exos 58 I immediately ditched the lid, even before my first hike. So I really want a smaller, lighter pack. With weights being pretty close, why would I buy a more expensive ULA etc. over this pack? Thanks in advance to any who submit their advise.
Have you checked out the Berghaus fast hike 45 at 910gm? It has an annoy frame, roll top, 10 external stretch mesh pockets, such as lower water bottle pockets, hipbelt pockets, shoulder strap pockets and an external bladder pocket. You can get your stuff without stopping to remove your backpack. It is too under-hyped. Bring it to public awareness.
Great video. You mention that you sold your pack and that you have in other videos sold equipment. My question is do you sell locally or use an online service? I have some extra gear I no longer need and wish to sell it to be able to obtain other newer gear. Thanks for the video and you time.
Thanks. I sell items both locally and online. I either use Offerup, Facebook, or a local craigslist type site here in Utah. Facebook and Offerup have been the best.
It is a nice pack i kinda want one but i def hear your negatives. Ive heard people carry their water bottle where its normally kept in the side pockets but they use that thinner flap opening on the side pocket to hold snacks making it quick to get at them but they probably should have made the material stretchier if thats a word? Lol more flexible. They also should have made the lid removable because theirs times you want to use it and times you dont need it. My only complaints with out having owned one is color. More subdued color options like desert sand or olive green, brown would have been nice. But from what i understand color dye does increase weight although very minimal it does from what i understand.? Thanks for the more indepth review man appreciate it! Who knows maybe in a year or two they will bring out one similar but with these changes? That would be nice! Levity 2 pack 50 liter or 55. Stay safe! Hike on!!
I bought one (Eja) to replace an Exos 38 while on my hike on the Appalachian trail, I didn't get a mile on trail before my back hurt and my hips were screaming. I swapped packs with my daughter just so I could get back to the car. Whereupon I immediately returned it to the store. I was very disappointed with the "upgrade" from the Exos.
Thanks for your honest review. I did not like the idea of the hip belt pockets being eliminated. My other negative was the front pocket not being mesh along with the side pockets. I put all of the wet stuff in the mesh pockets. Having them partially drying during the day ( when it's not raining on me ) is a benefit. I was arguing with myself about the two different packs which have the arc frame. The Osprey levity 45L or the Zpacks ( 55 L ) Arc Blast. I decided to go with the Cuben Fiber pack. Negative side to the Zpacks Arc Blast , the hip belt pockets are extra but available as add on's. As well as top side pockets. Additional benefit , Cuben fiber is waterproof or water resistant..
hi. I just bought a levity 45 received today, I just tried it on me and I am surprised to see that the hip belt is really very wide and exceeds a little on each side, so when walking I have the inside of the elbows which rub on these parts and also on the bottom of the shoulder straps which come to be fixed on this part .... I am a little disappointed because I wonder if I will be able to use this bag, did you feel this problem with yours?
I used my Levity on The Camino from France to Santiago. I love it..... Only downside for me is that it tilts outwards every time I put it down. I tried to pack it in many different ways, no matter what... it tilts If I don't lean it very obliquely to something :-) That REALLY pissed me off after a couple of weeks on the Camino with socks changing breaks every 2 hours :-))))
I have not used this pack but do use the same company packs with the same suspension system. I’m slim and it’s a fabulous fit. So so comfortable. Just check that the belt is small enough for you. Try it on loaded T-shirt and hungry. If you still have an inch of adjustment left you should be fine.
I was very happy when I saw this light pack coming up in Europe as light and ultralight backpacking is not as such in the focus here as it is in the US. I am jealous of the huge variety of amazing light packs you have over there. For Europeans they are not easy to get without paying a lot extra. So I picked up the lumina 45 which is the women's version of the Levity but unfortunately I have made exactly the same experience as you. Only few things fit into the front bag and it is extremely hard to get the bottle it in and out of the side bags. Disappointing. I will try to sell it.
Hi, Below 2 online retailers sell Ultralight packs, from HMG and Gossamer for example. I've bought from both of them and they ship very fast, www.outdoorline.sk/en/ backpackinglight.dk/
@@castrobal Hi, thanks for the links. I have bought my HMG 3400SW from outdoorline some months ago. Indeed I can confirm that shipping is incredibly fast (less that 24 hrs from sk to nl).
Interesting review comparing a minimalist UL pack with something in a different category. I guess this really shows that a minimalist UL pack might not be for everyone.
I was almost seduced by the Lumina, until I truly thought through what the reality of what my relatively heavy tent and sleeping bag would feel like in this bag.
Spot on review! Osprey has not figure their ultralight game yet, maybe it’s not in their future plans but currently they’re not offering anything to the UL market.
Hmmm great video. You’d figure these companies would get guys/gals together who do a lot of ultra light backpacking and pitch a couple of designs for you guys to test out and see what could make it better or how it could be modified before they set out a new pack! It’s would make them tons of money prior to putting something out people might think is trash. Just my thoughts, but enjoyed the video.
Seeing this makes me happy that I chose the Exos model instead. It stinks that this doesn't work for you after selling your old pack. I would not be a fan of all that rigid material on the Levity. The angled opening for the bottle is nice on the Exos and doesn't bother me no matter the bottle type. But that pack has stretchy mesh. It would be nice to see Osprey offer a divide in that side pocket that could take care of top load and side load items getting in the way of each other.
You regret doing it because your not an ultralight backpacker so most of your negatives where about features that an ultralight pack isn’t about. So maybe you should’ve done some research before purchasing it. I’ll bet if your where going with 12 lbs it would be the best pack ever. It’s like a muscle car guy reviewing a Japanese car lol
Every osprey i have tried is uncomfortable for me their harnesses are rubbish not stiff enough to transfer any weight to your back. My 3ful pack is way way better for peanuts!
I picked up the Levity 60 and the reason being that a fullsize Counter Assault Bear Keg will fit into the bottom of it in a horizontal position and sits perfectly at the small of my back and therefore can not be felt against my back at all. @@BackcountryExposure Yeah. I was trying to find a work around for the lack of hip belt pockets that wouldn't add weight.

GearRat Outdoors on FB is a good resell spot as well as Grizzle Gear on FB
Thank you. I will look at those places.
Great review Dev!
Thanks brother!
Hello
I hesitate between levity 45 and thru 40
which one do you advise me?
i also own the optic 48 do you think i will feel a differnece ??
thank you
Can this fit into a cabin size luggage?
Were the uncomfortable points you mentioned the product of bearing more than an ultra-light load?
Wow dude great review and great points here. Hopefully based on this, we'll see a Levity v2.0.
Additional benefit , Cuben fiber is waterproof or water resistant..
great review
Great review man. Thanks for sharing.
Practically dislocate my shoulder every time I try to get a water bottle in/out of the side pockets on my Osprey pack 😆😬
hi.
I just bought a levity 45 received today, I just tried it on me and I am surprised to see that the hip belt is really very wide and exceeds a little on each side, so when walking I have the inside of the elbows which rub on these parts and also on the bottom of the shoulder straps which come to be fixed on this part ....
I am a little disappointed because I wonder if I will be able to use this bag,
did you feel this problem with yours?
I used my Levity on The Camino from France to Santiago. I love it..... Only downside for me is that it tilts outwards every time I put it down. I tried to pack it in many different ways, no matter what... it tilts If I don't lean it very obliquely to something :-)
That REALLY pissed me off after a couple of weeks on the Camino with socks changing breaks every 2 hours :-))))
Frame 1:22. What jacket is that?
It’s the Berghaus Hyper Jacket. Super rad lightweight rain shell.
it will be comfortable if i am slim man? Could you recomend this backpack after using?
I have not used this pack but do use the same company packs with the same suspension system. I’m slim and it’s a fabulous fit. So so comfortable. Just check that the belt is small enough for you. Try it on loaded T-shirt and hungry. If you still have an inch of adjustment left you should be fine.
Hi. May I ask what type of Arcteryx-jacket you are wearing?

I was very happy when I saw this light pack coming up in Europe as light and ultralight backpacking is not as such in the focus here as it is in the US. I am jealous of the huge variety of amazing light packs you have over there. For Europeans they are not easy to get without paying a lot extra. So I picked up the lumina 45 which is the women's version of the Levity but unfortunately I have made exactly the same experience as you. Only few things fit into the front bag and it is extremely hard to get the bottle it in and out of the side bags. Disappointing. I will try to sell it.
Have you looked at the Berghaus fast hike 45 at 910gm?
You don’t have a hydration bladder?
Hi, Below 2 online retailers sell Ultralight packs, from HMG and Gossamer for example. I've bought from both of them and they ship very fast,

@@castrobal Hi, thanks for the links. I have bought my HMG 3400SW from outdoorline some months ago. Indeed I can confirm that shipping is incredibly fast (less that 24 hrs from sk to nl).
@@2chill2 might have been a good alternative
Interesting review comparing a minimalist UL pack with something in a different category. I guess this really shows that a minimalist UL pack might not be for everyone.
I was almost seduced by the Lumina, until I truly thought through what the reality of what my relatively heavy tent and sleeping bag would feel like in this bag.
Great review
Could it be due to their lifetime guarantee? Maybe they don't want to be dealing with lycra or mesh damage returns.
Spot on review! Osprey has not figure their ultralight game yet, maybe it’s not in their future plans but currently they’re not offering anything to the UL market.
Did you get sued too by backcountry.com?

If you want to remove the top, try a knife & just cut it off.
Just JOKING. (SUBSCRIBED & liked).
Exos are better
Eh? Chapstic, what are you a WUS, or something?
What? 🤔
@@BackcountryExposure Only girlie men use Chapstic, don't they?
