2007 Ford Taurus SE - Cheap Or Free Transmission Fix (Check Transmission Light)

- The AX4N 4-speed transmission is known for being unreliable. Especially the earlier years but after having some shifting problems with the shifting between the first and second gears and the dipstick coming up a half an inch I figured it was a clogged transmission vent tube and I was right. The vent tube cap was missing which led to crud getting in clogging it up.
Now you can go to your local parts store and buy a replacement for $18 to $25 or do what I did. I cleaned it out with a wire clothes hanger and then put a piece of hose on it and directed it to the ground so it can breathe without more contaminates blocking it up again. If you have a problem with you Taurus shifting or leaking through the dipstick then check out the breather vent tube. It can save you a lot of $$$ trying to search for the problem or having a crooked mechanic replace a transmission for no reason.
RUclips has been holding out on me, I've been searching for the solution to this exact problem for months! Thanks!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Rough shifting from 1st to 2nd. The last owner rebuilt the transmission and still rough shifting. Your advice solved the problem. Your the best!
Thank you so much! I have a 2000 ford taurus SEL and this has been driving me crazy! I live in a small mountain town so everything is super $$$. Been working on my car for the past couple months to get it up to specs and this was the last thing that had me stumped!
It could one of many problems. In my case it was the breather.. It could also be old/dirty fluid, bad/failing torque converter, or something else. Change the fluid and filter if you haven't yet and see how it runs. If it continues to act up check the breather. Hopefully you won't have to rebuild it.
Best Idea yet, a small piece of brass pipe and a section of hose. Good job!
I’ve been having this problem now for a while leaving from a light every now and then it’ll shift hard from first to second gonna have to check this out tomorrow in the light it’s people like you who help us little guys lol
Might be time for a rebuild. I am getting mine done next month.
About how much does that cost my 06 taurus is doing the same thing as yours the dipstick pushed out but it havent done it since I found the breather but how do you clean it
@@nerdypunkin4336 You really can't clean it. You will have to replace it. Ford has a replacement but you will have to go to the dealership to get one unfortunately. It cost under $30. The replacement has a hose that turn down so crud don't get in it.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 ok thank you for answering my car is also over the 150,000 mark so I will also get the fluid changed and filter replaced
Nik Lee, what year Taurus do you drive and what engine? The OHV 3.0L or the DOHC 3.0L?
my husband has 2 ford taurus'. 2001 has 213K and the 2006 230k. he has never had a problem with the 01 at all. he over heated the engine and bent the intake valves. the 06 just started having a problem with the transmission at 230k. so they have both been very good transmissions. also, there is actually a part to replace that vent it is a different vent with a barb at the end with a hose and it is recommended to wrap the hose around behind the power brake booster.
You can also cut a small "x" on top of the cap to ensure it has enough ability to vent, not pop off, but not allow anything to get in. Just a small knife or razor blade, cut through to make a tiny "vent" on the rubber cap
I have an 07 taurus….going to give this a shot.
Thx !!!
Can you give me an update I just change my Ac Compressor and driving after 5 minutes transmission came on
@@juanfelix864
So far it is still working. I may put in another bottle today
Hi, I have a 2007 Ford Taurus, it started leaking oil from the bayonet.
That's for good dudes like yourself by loading up how to fix videos.
More to come. I learned from my dad and he is no longer with us. Why let good knowledge go to waste?
I had to change a fuse (15) then light, a/c started back working and I had power again once I stepped on the gas. Lol
Let me know if you ever heard of this problem, it's exactly like yours with the 2nd gear hesitating then slamming into gear BUT, it only happens after 40 minutes of driving. Not miles, minutes. Once you let it cool down for like an hour or more you can drive it normally again. I've been driving it like this for 6 years and nobody knows how to fix it, not even Aamco.
My transmission did that a year after I fixed this issue. Drove it for over a year like that. I basically use my gas pedal to shift the car by using different RPMs. Later on I had the transmission rebuilt and didn't have that issue again.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 So then replacing the VSS isn't going to help me is it ?
@@micktiano9386 I tried it and it didn't work.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 A lot of times when that happens when fluid is hot,its worn bushings in the transmission bypassing fluid when the fluid gets to operating temperature, pump cannot keep the pressure up until it reves the pump up and builds higher pressure, then bamb, hard shifts!Works great when fluid is cold, when this is the problem they never get better until rebuilt with new bushings!
Which part is the breathing ?
I need help with my 2003 ford taurus ses I think it's my anti theft device. Can I bypass it???
It doesn't want to start?
Thanks! You fixed my problem!! Thumbs up!!
Where is the breather at cause in your video u said you circled it but I didn't see it. I need to see where u took the hanger and cleaned it out.
Help me
Did your car chirp? My car is chirpping. Its a 2006 ford Taurus with 50 k miles yes it 2021..( The car was my brother in laws 90 yr old mothers car) it set alot in a well temp garage. I got it 3 years ago. No long road trips its been babied. So a chirping sound. Nothing else wrong with the car running but the mechanic said the chirping sound is from the transmission.
Get it checked by a professional. It could be an issue with moisture that got into the transmission causing the noise when running. They are known for that. Even when not driven as much. A change of fluid and filter could quiet it down.
Dunno if you still read through the comments on your older videos, but a little while back I replaced the speed sensor on my 98' Taurus' AX4N to try and fix the rough shifting problem from 1st to second. It helped quite a bit, and fixed another problem where it would randomly rev up for no reason at lower gears, but the rough shifting still comes up from time to time. Before I potentially drop the pan, change the filter, clean the pan, and add some lucas with some new atf-do you have any advice when it comes to preserving these old transmissions? Any response would be awesome, man. Love the Taurus and Mercury vids
Unfortunately they came pretty weak kneed from the factory. A rebuild might be in order. The funny part is most of the rebuild kits have better quality parts than the factory ones.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 Yeah it definitely seems that the best way to go with these AX4N/S transmissions is to have them rebuilt with better parts if not just getting a completely remanufactured transmission if you need something to really last a long while. I'm just hoping my transmission will last me a good while for now. It's my only car at the moment, and I also want to keep it around when I get another
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 Also it's very strange because some days the transmission shifts flawlessly while other days there will be that one unusually hard shift. Guess it's just the cheap parts and 90s design that's really messing with it-especially at its age
@@vatz1151 Yep. It is giving you that warning that the end is coming.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 Ok so little update-cleaning out the vent actualy helped a crap ton more than I was expecting . Almost seemless shifting now. Nothing perfect of course but yeah-thanks a lot for making this video man. Little quick fixes like these can really save someone's car and wallet
cousin says there is a bulliten on them, and you can slice an X in the boot with a razor to let it breathe
My Taurus will go in rev but not forward. I have pressure at the port in park. I tired this but nothing. What else could be wrong?
The clutches for the forward gears are worn out. You going to need a rebuild.
Hey! I have a 2004 ford taurus se and it goes into drive but it does not shift gears into second and it just over revs the rpms it only shifts into reverse any ideas on what it might be?
Mine is doing the same thing. I can drive it but I just go about 40 mph because it will not shift at all. If you find out the problem please let me know
@@STONERETTE916 so Apparently the problem for mine was that my shifting solenoid sensor And my trans fluid filter was clogged! So u should take it too a transmission mechanic preferably someone that knows about ford and hell put like it was brand new!
He much did they charge you?
@@STONERETTE916 little hefty since i live in Puerto Rico but it was 750$ without buying the solenoids myself and if i bout them it was like 500
Coo thanks for your help bro God bless 🙏
I have 05 ford torus with 4f50n transmion will pull in reverce nut want go in drive
Clutch and friction packs are worn. Needs a rebuild.
any idea why my 1994 taurus transmission just quit working at stop light. pulled off highway exit ramp when to take off and nothing. was able to get trans to engage by manually dropping back to first. only first and reverse engage now only with limited engagement over revving and pops out lower revs 1st re engages, sensor problem i hope or is it torque converter
Take it to a shop to have it looked at but from what explained it looks like the clutch packs and races are shot. Time for a rebuild.
Mines not getting 4th gear im cruzing at 3krpm at 60mph
Looks like you need a transmission rebuild.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 I cleaned out the vent tube and it no longer shifts hard fro. 1st to 2nd gear they shift properly now but no slipping of any type
Me and my 05 taurus ended up taking a jump now it says check transmission don't want to start without gassing and won't shif or go over 70
It needs a rebuild. Those oare a sign of bad friction plates.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 what i thought still drives imma drive it till its done it was my first car fell in love with
I had to replace my torque converter on mine. 2000 Mercury sable. It runs now but if I don't let it warm up it will jerk into reverse....any idea how to fix this?
It might due for a rebuild. How many miles you have on your Sable?
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 120283
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 before I put new torque converter it wouldn't even move. Forward or reverse
@@rickyknapp7388 It could be a sticking low/intermediate servo piston that applies the low/intermeidate band, a sticking valve in the main control valve body or a broken or misinstalled accumulator piston and/or spring. It can also be something as simple as low fluid. I'd get it looked at.
Try this video to explsin what probably happened

And Eric The Car Guy on "how a torque converter works." It sounds like your torque converter was stripped where the splines on the shaft go?
Anybody have the poctures of the breather, sorry but im not an expert also im not very good speaking english so if you can help me please, i have this problem but i didnt understand whats the breather :/

I don't understand why people try to make race cars out of Honda Civics the Ford Taurus has enough power stock to drag a couple civics behind It
Dried Marmot Honda's are cheap, light, and engine swaps and modifications are straight forward which is why they are so popular. They are the Ford fox body of Japanese cars. That being said because of that they are everywhere which is why I do not want one personally.
The Taurus is the ultimate sleeper back in the 80s. Especially the SHOs. With a few tweeks they can whip Mustangs and Camaros. The SHOs of today can make close to 400+ hp with exhaust and a tune. Unfortunately they will be phased out next year. I chose the 2000-2007 Taurus because they look like rental cars but are basically the same car from the 1990s and back. All the SHO stuff bolt right in and no one would know til you embarrass them at the stop light or strip. I am working out the bugs with this set up and then I am hitting the strip to get it dialed in. I want at least low 14s/high 13s. Not looking to set records. Just having something fun to drive around in.
what's wrong with civics or hondas? civics are the number 1 cars used in underground racing up in Japan.
Antony Lopez I have no issues with Hondas. Like I said, they are the Japanese version of the fox body Mustang of the 80s but like the Mustang they are everywhere. I rather have something different.
ty gentlemen.
@@derekmtheriault good video . I cleaned mine out and found out a mud bee made a nest in it .
No sound
if the vent is Clogged will it cause the explanation point to light up on the dash and flash
A "check transmission" warming will come on.
@@ragintaurusmusclemercury7023 ok my light came on after I unplugged my throttle body position sensor why is that?
@@GetHookedByBella If you unplug the throttle body positioning sensor the computer will read that it has to be reset. That will cause a check engine light to come on.
My stick does this and now it’s stuck in limp mode
