    Wow Lyn, so intimidating that so many seedlings die... I've sowed some storebought Epiphyllum seed for the first time about 3 months ago and of the 10 only 2 germinated. It's almost time to get them out of their protective moist bag environment and I'm even more nervous now haha! I'll have to rewatch your videos on how to treat the seedlings when they're in their first year. I've sowed some seeds of my own Euphorbia last year and none germinated, but it's producing seed again (it's literally shooting them into the air) so I'll try again, it looks incredible in your video to have your own (mystery) cactus seedlings growing.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 года назад

      Thats wonderful Nathalie that you have two Epiphyllum babies ready to be taken out of their bags, and yes its a shame that sometimes the germination rate can be low on seeds, and sometimes i have sown seeds and none germinate which is a shame, and I would definitely try again with your Euphoriba seeds :-D your Peperomias you gave us are doing so well, and I have the unboxing video coming on my channel on Tues 7th July

    Oh I love that mother monkey’s tail cactus so pretty. I won’t be that brave to hold that mammillaria without any gloves or tongs haha. I have 3 different mammillarias with hook spines that are due for repotting but I don’t know when I can be strong enough to do it hahaha, I have to make a video on that. Your video inspire me to do it soon. Also, I can’t wait for my purple mug and hoodie 💜💜💜

    I always thought that Colademononis was a strange name until I googled it. Turns out that the Spanish name for it is cola de mono, which is Spanish for tail of monkey. So they just made the Spanish name into a single word and added the Latin ending, onis. If you think about it that way, the name is easy to pronounce.
    If you had several other mammillarias blooming at the same time, your baby may be a hybrid. some growers may have a problem with that, but if the plant grows and blooms well, I would say value it for itself. If it is a hybrid, you have a perfect right tom give it a variety name of your choosing.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 года назад

      So very true Emmit :-D it may be a little hybrid of its own and I can give this cutie its own little name :-D and thanks so much fir sharing the Spanish name for this cutie Monkeys tail

    The mammilaria could be a seedling bombycina as you have shown, I've never seen a seedling of this species. The only thing is its lack of red spines & wool. Hmmm🤔could it be? May have to wait as it grows. Great video!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks to across the Emerald Isle have a great day !!! Peace,Love,Plants✌💖🌵🌸🌴💐🌿🌻🍀🌷

    • @demonhalo67
      @demonhalo67 4 года назад +2

      That's exactly what I thought Clyde.
      There does seem to be some natural genetic variation where some M. bombicina's produce wool and others won't, but I think the general consensus is that the majority will produce wool from a small size.
      I'm thinking it could be the common strawberry fishhook cactus (M. Dioica) what you think?

    • @morrisparkintheozarks6831
      @morrisparkintheozarks6831 4 года назад +1

      Well, I don't have this species, but from research, I don't think dioica has hooked central spines. At least from photos I've been looking at.

    • @morrisparkintheozarks6831

    • @desertplantsofavalon

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 года назад +1

      haha Clyde yes I think one of my Mammillaria multiple clumped that was given to us a couple of years ago may be a M magnifica, it was a no ID one but it does look very similar and when we got it it has seed pods that had burst open, I think its very possible that a little seed dropped into the seed tray, its going to be interesting to see haha XXXX

    No gloves👍🙂. Can also use the colored flexible fuzzy sticks(pipe cleaners) kids use for art projects to handle cacti. Wrap it around, not too tight, pick it up by the ends of the fuzzy stick(s).Twist a few together to make longer ones.I also use them to tie some of my tall cleisto's to support sticks.Also keep my big opuntia micro daisies tied up with fuzzy sticks so they keep growing vertical instead of horizontal.

  • @demonhalo67
    @demonhalo67 4 года назад +1

    Some Mammillaria's are easy to ID becouse there is a striking part of the plant that is unique enough that other genetic variations on other plants will still make it easy to identify as the same species. Your plant however is not so easy.
    To start, we can see it is definately a fishhook cactus, and more specifically a Mammillaria. It is probably not the close M. family relative of Cochemiea, as the body shape on those cacti tend to be much more slender and the fishhook's are normally much longer than the spines.
    The new spines at the crown appear to have a shade of yellow to them which quickly fades to a blanc white, whilst the fishhooks have a red tinge/tone to them. I don't think it's M. bombicina, as it lacks wool between the aereoles.
    Most photographs of M. Dioica show this plant as densely spined, however yours is more sparsely covered. I think that is becouse your plant has not been grown in full sun at this stage:- otherwise this species seems to match the criteria from your footage.
    Otherwise, it may require a few years wait until the plant flowers and finally gives up its identity. Mammillaria and Opuntia are by far the biggest two cacti families. Any suitable in-depth encyclopaedia's on the subject are always extremely helpful.

      Its going to be interesting to see what this little Mammillaria cutie turns out to be haha, and this little one is not the easiest to ID, and once it flowers in a few years time it will be a happy day for me haha

      Hi Hannah, so sorry to hear about your Monkey tail, but the good news is they propagate really well from any pieces that get broken off, if you let the cuttings dry for a few days and then plant up in dry cactus soil they should re root for you, good luck with your cactus and thanks so much fr watching XXXX
