Fender Tremolux KILLER - 1959 Guild 66-J Masteramp Goes "BEAST MODE"

  • In this video we'll do an electronics service, repair and modification on a rarely seen amp from 1959 that is remarkably similar to the tweed Fender Tremolux of the day. This amp was badged as "Guild Masteramp" Model 66-J originally, but who really made it? We'll explore the history of the amp and modify it to add some modern features like effects loop and cascaded gain stage that expand the tonal range and usefulness for live and recording. Was this amp made by Multivox amps in New York or Ampeg of New Jersey? Or maybe both?

    UPDATE: The replaced CE cap can that was put in this amp by another tech is actually physically vibrating. I'm having to change it to discreet components on terminals after doing this video. Something is amiss in this can's construction. The physical vibration is so violent it's manifesting into audible noise in the circuit. Very odd. I've only ever seen this with power transformers before now that had loose laminations. I also think this amp could benefit from a choke. I can feel a follow up video might be in order on this one.

    • @danmackintosh6325

      Will be interested to see the follow up and the vibrating cap, that's a strange one lol... Also, only found the video because I saw your post about it not getting views! I have notifications set to "all" yet still barely ever see your uploads. Methinks the screwtube gods are not happy with your practicing freedom of speech, fuck them... fuck them in their stupid asses...

    Brad, good video, 👍, when you have a 4 section filter can, you have a common ground for the power amp, and the f/e. That doesn't work in my experience. You may want to try to separate the
    f/e ground from the filter cap. I've had the same issue many times with the 4 section can. I just use 3 with the common ground, and use a separate cap for the f/e supply. Cheers

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comment. I have had so many experiences with different amps and I think you might be right. Some amps don't seem to mind, but now that you mention it, maybe that's worth experimenting with. I need to get back in this one anyway to replace that vibrating can cap. I think the fault is probably physical in the construction in this case, but I'll mess with the grounding scheme more if it persists.

    great Brad! i really like this mod , it's kind like having a super lite marshall now, but the option for a clean tone too , i guess...
    i would like to add a passive fx loop to my 5e3 conversion , but i'm afraid the signal out of the normal channel pot as send would blow my pedals 😁😁, great job anyway , enjoyed the video a lot 🤟

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  2 года назад +2

      Nah. You should never have any issues with the signal after one gain stage. The only way your pedals could be affected at all is if the first coupling cap in the amp shorted, but that's not likely.

      @@TheGuitologist cool i might try then , maybe i add a separate box , it's kind a odd amp , pre amp is apart and connected to the power amp with a cable, so i can just disconnect it and run the signal through the send return box , or just add a solis state fx loop and feed it with the last nod , think it can work ! thanks👍🏻

    Brad, good call on the filament wires.. however, i always put effects loops in between the pre-amp stage and power amp.. reason being as the type of effects you run in an effects loop are modulation, delay, verbs, etc.. things you want post tone stack.. to effect the whole sound and not change it before or mid stream.. then you can use the return as a power amp in, to bypass the entire pre-amp too.. or the send to take the pre-amp signal to a outboard power amp.. very useful to send to an amp/cab sim or straight to a board or for recording/mixing.. the way you have it, you might as well just run all pedals/effects before the input like you would distortion, compressors, etc.. as always, great content and thanks for creating for us.. btw, how's the school board meeting case going, hope the dropped the charges.. sorry if i missed an update.. we care about you man.. we stand for the same principles

      The FX loop that Brad put in is going to be useless. It's the dumbest thing I've seen on this channel. It just doesn't make any sense.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  2 года назад +5

      I appreciate the comment. Good to see you again, by the way. There are no additional stages of preamp after the loop besides the PI. I accept the criticism, but also, the benefit of placing the loop where I did is that you get an additional "mode" to the amp by allowing the Return to double as an instrument input and still have tone controls. So you can still use the loop as you suggest to affect more of the amps' overall post "gain" tone while maintaining the third "mode". That was my thinking anyway. Not saying I'm right though.

      @@TheGuitologist I'm beginning to see sense. And in the end, what matters is how the owner is intending to use the FX loop. If this solution serves the needs of the owner then it can't be wrong.

    • @OtherTheDave

      @@TheGuitologist I mean, it just takes a chassis-mounted 4pdt switch and you can move the loop between the two locations, right? Then both you and the OP can be right and wrong at the same time.
      That’s gotta make this some sort of advanced quantum mechanical amp, right? 😂

    I was trying to show my love for your channel. So I went with your last suggestion on your list, when the cops came I told them about your RUclips- one of the officers appreciated my suggestion and found my antics funny the other two did not. I ended up taking a ride In the back of a cop car and spending 72 hours in the hospital for an emergency evaluation- 🙃 I told them I was crazy but not a threat to myself or anyone else- most of the time. They just couldn't believe I ran down the street yelling Long live the Guitologist naked sober in 30 degree weather. I said to them yes I was sober it may have been why I thought doing that was a good idea.
    Moral of the story kiddos - don't get caught running down the street naked, go home and put your clothing back on before the cops come. You can still tell them about the channel. But you won't have to get Ep"ed by the cops.
