- All right, let's talk about Red Letters, big banjos, ice mountains and my grandmas knuckles.
More behind the meaning of my song "Red Letters" and how I discovered the red letter version of the Bible.
When I was a kid I remember sitting in the church pew next to my grandmother and asking her why some of her bible was written in red. She explained it was the Red Letter edition and whenever Jesus, God’s only Son, spoke, it was written in red. As a kid I thought that was just how God wrote it.

Nope. I was wrong. About this and other things. Turns out it was a guy by the name of Louis Klopsch. It was the late 1800’s and he very much wanted the common man to not only have access to scripture but for the story of God’s reconciliation to jump off the pages as it had for him. At the time, translations such as the King James didn’t use punctuation marks that are common place now. You can imagine how difficult numerous passages could be with the absence of any quotation marks or full stops.

One evening, he was reading in Luke 22:20, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you,” and that is when Mr. Klopsch had an idea -the words of Jesus in red.

He didn’t stop there, he and the editors went all the way to the beginning and took any scripture in the old testament foretelling the arrival of a messiah as well as any scriptures that Jesus was quoted as quoting and put them in red as well; a scarlet thread woven through all of time and creation.
Then I read the red letters
And the ground began to shake
The prison walls started falling
And I became a free man that day

I didn't realize people did not know what red letters meant because I was raised Pentecostal and we only used red letter bibles. My grandmother also had large knuckles. I sure loved my Mamaw and I love this song so much. You're truly anointed, Crowder.

Actually, I remember my marmy's knuckles more, her hands were strong and worn, from many years of being in the fire, years of service to the least of these, including me, hands that were lifted high during times of joy and times of sorrow, hands raised high in praise and adoration to our King of Kings. You know how when your mom is holding you and you play with her mouth and she pretends to bite you, lips safely covering teeth ... well one Sunday I was doing that very thing during praise and worship and managed to get my finger curled around her dentures, and out came her teeth, startling me and they then proceeded to fly under the pew. My poor marmy had to crawl under the pew to collect her teeth. I loved it when she would tell me that story. 😊😊😊

The confusion might stem from the fact that these days there's a ton of Bibles that don't change the text coloring anymore, most likely due to printing cost.

Thank you for your explanation. I do have one question though. Why are the Red Letters more important than the Black Letters? Didn't Jesus come as the 'Word of God' and didn't He tell his disciples on the road to Emmaus that all of the scriptures were about Him. I don't mean to be picky but I think it is important that we emphasis the Whole Love Letter from Jesus. I do like your music, but as a worship leader I'm concerned with what we teach through our Christian music. I'm not against new music, it can be very healthy. Neither am I a fan of many of the songs in the hymnal. God bless you and your ministry.

I don’t like how this album and especially this one song has the name of the devil more then the lord! Just doesn’t sound right.
