For future reference, the reason that the vehicle you were driving wouldn't go fast may be that it was in 4 wheel drive low. The indicator on the driver's panel looked like all four wheels were lit up. I know from experience that most 4 wheel drives have low and high speed gearing. Low is for crawling through mud and high is for faster speeds across sandy lose materials.
