But that's why, when people compare Band-Maid with other groups and don't put them at the top of the rock pile, forget how prolific they are at finding and writing great songs. That's in average of one new song every month over five years! What other Band (male or female worldwide) has that kind of catalog in such a short time? That's also one reason why I believe they are becoming the Hard Rock Beatles of our time! Long live Band-Maid!
When I hear this song, I feel it allows you to move through emotions without being manipulative. It's a bit more subtle. So when the first verse kicks in, that funky riff and beat let you know, despite probably being a sad song, it's a little more melancholy than weepy. The chorus is heartfelt but not overdone. Then the break happens and the second verse is darker. It's more like that anger that bubbles beneath the surface. Second chorus pushes with more emotion, then the bridge/solo which is like an eruption of tension that bursts into that final chorus with the strings in the background, like the sun breaking over a rainy day. It just takes it to another level for me, really setting up that final chorus and solo. My only criticism is it ends rather abruptly. Would have liked that last solo to go on a bit longer. The middle solo could have been longer, but I think the build works perfectly the way it is. Anyways, my 2 cents. Love this song, makes me emotional every time I hear it. Thanks for the review!
Awkward is one of my absolute favorite songs of theirs. I love the way it builds, and the outro solo is emotional. The only thing is wish is that the final solo went on longer.
I like the hard driving Rock by them like anyone else. But I like when they switch it up, It shows musical maturity. They can do three or four different genres in the same song and it works. Not many groups can do that, man or woman !
OH no !! the Bar is already so high now you set it higher, you finally agree with Most Band-Maid fans in that the Solo's should be longer, in this case at least.
Some songs to go: Rock in Me (Miku's vocals, very different song), Puzzle/Anemone Acoustic Live, CLANG, Take Me Higher!!!, Matchless GUM. All of those are AMAZING.
This is a common composition by Kanami and MISA, and probably the only one in which MISA only plays with fingers. On solos. Yes, Kanami, Misa, and especially Akane are a kind of aspiring sadists. Although I read that there was also a longer percussion solo at the last concert.

From a musicians point of view I agree with the funkiness. The absolutely hardest thing to master is to NOT play. The breaks, ghost tones and space is the hard thing about funk(y) music but also the thing that makes it groovy. The old saying 'less is more' holds a lot of wisdom. To me Awkward is 100 % Misa's song. Her playing is far from her most spectacular. Being spectacular is easy. Being restrained and precise is hard!
Excellent point! I would add syncopation to the "making Funky" list. And to make it really Funky, add a feeling of haphazard syncopation to the groove so it's laid back yet cleaver.
My favourite Band Maid song, and absolutely my Favourite Akane (not your favourite, no bias on this channel i know) drumming the ending drums are just perfect, not her most spectacular but just brings everything together and ties a neat bow on it.
