  • Boris Shtokolov (1930-2005 was one of the great basses of the 20th century. Not too well known in the US because so many great singers of the Soviet period did not sing abroad, and all too often their recordings were not known here either. But ask any Russian opera lover who the greatest basses in opera were in the 20th century, and, be assured, you will hear about Boris Shtokolov! He sang for 30 years, between 1959 and 1989 at the Mariinsky, starring in such roles as Ruslan, Don Basilio, Boris Godunov, The Demon, Prince Gremin, Mefistofele, and others. So popular and respected was he that he was awarded the titles of People's Artist of the Soviet Union, State Prize of the USSR, the Order of Lenin, The Order of the Patriotic War, and others! Truly a Russian superstar of opera! He also did a lot of folk singing, as did Chaliapin before him.

My favorite aria from the opera. Only a Russian can sing it like this!

Bravo! In addition to Boris' musical artistry, the fullness and richness of his bass voice truly is extraordinary.

Just catching up with some of your older posts, Professor. And after listening to this, I believe I am now addicted to Shtokolov. Thank you, dear Edmund.

Have you tried by Shtokolovholic Anonymous? No? Doesn't matter. They can't help anyway. Are you doing well, dear Roberta?

This is a gem of a bass unknown outside USSR ( I think not only in the US) for many years, as many other great singers. What a pity!
Thank you, dear Professor for posting "him".

Aetion, as you are both Hellenic and a lover of the bass voice, does the name of an old friend of mine, Mario Haniotis, mean anything to you? Just wondering.

Good Morning, Father. No, I do not know him. I have just googled the name and found out that he was a French bass vocalist of Greek parentage (Alexandria, Egypt, 1921 - Paris, September 2006). I do not know whether I can write a link here, but you can find about him on the google.
I have googled the name in Greek too, but didn't find anything about him. There is one video on YT with him, speaking about a composer, also unknown to me. I hope I am talking about the right person and that I have helped ea little.

The right man, indeed. He was a friend of mine in my youth in Paris. Mario was a fellow pupil of the great baritone and pedagogue René Bianco. He posessed an extremely beautiful and unusually powerful low register, a true basso profundo...they are rare. Messaien, among others, composed with his voice in mind, both solo and ensemble works. He was the bass anchor of the 12 soloist ensemble of French radio under Marcel Couraud, with whom I also performed.I likewise found the video you mention.

It' s a pity that such an artist is almost unknown. I do not know if anyone else knows him, as I am far from to be a specialist. Thanks anyway.

Well, that's politics for you. This extraordinary basso was definitely the Western world's loss. As was a lot of art and music during the Iron Curtain age. But at least now we get to know some amazing Soviet artists we'd never heard of before. And we have recordings like this magnificent one. Boris Shtokolov has a wonderfully clear, sweet tone, even for a basso! But then you know I love the bass range, especially when sung like this. :)

I bought his LP and the first song, "Shine shine, my star" blew me away.

Thank you my friend. Yes, he did a lot of singing of romantic and folk songs. He was also a good guitarist. His "pop" side made him something of a classic cult figure, in addition to being a widely respected and admired opera singer.

Contrary to some of these comments, Boris Shtokolov did, on occasion, perform abroad. Private recordings exist of Khovanshchina (the role of Dosifei) performances from Chicago (3rd October 1965.- the performances were on Sept. 26, 29; Oct. 3, 8, 11, 17) and Wiesbaden (with the Kirov on tour from 5th May 1979)

Truly great, both vocally and emotionally. Thank you for this. Is he still living and recording?

No, he died about 8 years ago. He did write a book on vocal technique in 1995, however. Thanks for the comment!

Great choice. He was indeed not known to us in the flesh, but an MK stereo LP was brought out here in the USA in the 60s, called ¨Presenting BS¨ to wide and unanimous critical acclaim...so record collectors were more than aware of him. Too bad that the politics of that time kept him off our stages. Thanks for this aria!
