Gov't Mule are known for its eclectic style and this album follows up on their critically acclaimed 2021 album “Heavy Load Blues,” which received a Grammy nomination.
What sets “Peace… Like A River” apart is its collaboration with a host of talented musicians. Billy F Gibbons lends his signature vocals to “Shake Our Way Out,” which is imbued with the unmistakable ZZ Top sound. Acclaimed actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton also makes an appearance, contributing his distinct vocal style to “The River Only Flows One Way.”
The album's opening track, “Dreaming Out Loud,” is particularly noteworthy. Guitarist Warren Haynes has curated a Sly and the Family Stone-inspired vocal approach where different singers take the helm at various points in the song. For this, he enlists the talents of blues artist Ruthie Foster, whose previous work with Gov’t Mule includes her backing vocals on their 2006 album “High & Mighty.” Joining her is Ivan Neville, a revered figure in the New Orleans soul scene.
Another exciting collaboration is with Celisse, a rising soul artist, who brings a fresh and dynamic vocal presence to “Just Across The River.”
“Peace… Like A River” represents Gov’t Mule’s continued exploration and mastery within the rock genre, and the inclusion of such an esteemed group of guest musicians is sure to makes this album a remarkable addition to their extensive discography.

No better 🎶 + 🎶 review channel. No one like you. God Bless you Phil. Always grateful!
I’m seeing Gov’t Mule Sunday here. Never miss em’ - I became a fan via ABB too. Embarrassed to say, this is the longest I’ve taken to buy a Mule release. Just ordered the deluxe 💿, will be here overnight.
Will prob get vinyl as well.

Thanks for the mention Phil, Lol! Great review and yes I love how they stretch out and just 'Groove' much like The Rolling Stones they've constantly evolved adding more and more strings to their bow, Reggae, Soul, Progressive Rock, the list goes on, they never disappoint and I'll be doing the Deluxe CD Version to the collection, keep on keeping on!

When I read the title 'Peace Like A River' it made me think of the Paul Simon song from his eponymous debut record. This does sound great, from what you say, Phil. I've heard of Gov't Mule before and I can imagine they're a band (institution, almost) I could really get into.

The Mule also does a nice version of one of my favorite songs by my favorite band. Deep Purple “Maybe I’m a Leo”. Warren does Ian and the boys proud. Cheers from the Captain. BTW towards the end you mentioned Paul Kossoff. Koss was a giant among us mortals. His vibrato has never been duplicated and many including myself have tried. Back Street Crawler forever.👍

They are a truly exciting band width all band members stretching out like great jazz musicians with Haynes pushing everyone further on. I have all their albums (cd:s and vinyl but let the vinyl go recently )since the 90s and have not been disappointed once. Agree with Jogi, take your pick wherever if you're new to them. Favorites? Too many to choose from but their version of "Mr Big" and their collaboration with John Scofield totally floored me. Saw Haynes when he was with the ABB playing alongside Derek Trucks at the Greek in LA. Fanbloodytastic!! Not only a talented musician but it's the feel he brings to whatever he's interpreting. They have the flow of the Grateful Dead with jazz sensitivities yet rooted in blues and rock. Makes a great Gumbo! Thanks for highlighting them Phil!
