Thank you sir! I got a long way to go… really trying to be cognizant and honest to myself how things are going. I don’t want to build bad habits during this earlier stage of my hg life. Really appreciate your kind and supportive comment☺️
This was awesome and made me smile during that flair, especially when your family started cheering. Reminds me of being young and special times had in microlight flying. Sooo cool! Congrats.
Awww thanks✨🙏✨ by the way… the family is not really my family, they are my Lookout Flight Park fam😆 really nice group of people there. I was moved by this sport’s tight-knit community and the level of their support for each other.
This was so exciting to watch! I’ve been in California close to 20 years. I’m originally from Alabama. My girlfriend came to visit in May and told me about her hang gliding adventure! I went hunting for information and found your video. So exhilarating! You did a great job! Thank you so much for posting this. I loved every minute of it especially the ending♥️
Thank you for checking my video out, and that makes me happy to hear that she got your interested in hang gliding😉 this has become my way of journaling my learning process. I do want more people to know about this sport in a real way. It can be done safely, and fear can be overcome by taking baby steps and learning from a good instructor. This sport has a bad rep from 70’s 80’s but that’s long time ago now, both the gliders and harness have evolved. I just want people to know that it is not the extreme sport they might imagine.
Hey, I’ve been jealous this whole winter watching others flying, especially people in west coast… we all get our turn as long as you pursue. Hope your turn is soon😉
We are glad to see you flying again and it is hard to believe that it is the same person who flew just a few feet the first time. Really pleased you are doing so well and thank you for sharing your journey.
Thank you sir☺️ everyday I’m thankful and feel lucky to have met this sport. You r right, I still remember my very first introductory class. I was soooooo nervous holding that training glider, I was scared to step forward as the tow line pulled me. More memories I gain more they become precious💖
I don't consider that a bad approach. I call that good adapting to the situation. You still landed great! But I do see what you mean. Even with a less than perfect approach, you did fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love your videos. You have very nice landing gear.
Thank you for your kind commend Garry! I just disappointed myself because I’d flown here once before and had a good understanding of the landmarks used for landing approach. I needed to review that better before I took off.. I think most sports are like art. We’ll never reach the perfection. There is always something to critique about and be better at.
As a hang glider pilot for almost 35 years, when you did that last turn around at the last minute to get into the wind, my pucker Factor went above 10. I've been in that position also looking at my left wingtip, hoping I didn't scrape it and auger in. In 2003, I had a six and a half hour flight over Lookout Mountain about 5,000 over. I will never forget it. Another thing is to keep one hand on the base tube and one hand on the down tube, and you will have better roll authority. Not only that, but your hands were way too low on the down tubes when turning, and for your flare. Good job
Thank you for your feedback and sharing your proud experience🙏 ✨I need to keep flying so I can make more and more unforgettable flight experiences and maybe one day I’ll experience something so awesome like yours😊
Glad you are back!! 3 month jitters. You did great!!!! Sorry you have to travel so far to fly. Can I interject something for you to ask your instructors? This helped me a lot!!!! I quit doing the aircraft landing approach that you are doing. You are looking for landmarks and as you had said won’t be there as you fly other sites. I found that once I reached the LZ and knew that I was going to land, even if I got to the LZ at 1,000 feet, I did figure 8’s on the down wind side of the LZ and stayed there doing figure 8’s repeatedly over the same area. That way I was NEVER unsure that I would be too low or too high in my final. With figure 8’s you can come out of the 8 pattern easily at any point of the 8 and go into final. Your figure 8 can be as oblong as you want to burn off altitude. With an aircraft approach you have the unsure feeling of (as what happened to you, when on your down wind, uh oh, am I too low to complete the base then turn to final. On a figure 8 you always in a position to go straight in to land. The figure 8, for me removed all worries about landing. Just a thought! Check with your instructors. Sky Out!!!!!!!
Keep on practicing that aircraft approach. You can use the house and get a feel for 45 degree angle to the LZ, and maintain that 45 degree throughout the pattern. That really helps me. It’s probably in the turquoise book, but I can’t read.
Woooow that’s a great advice thank you. They specifically told me to keep the left turn path tho, just because it is a flight park, by their site specific rules I guess and also me being a newer flyer they want me to just stick with it you know. So you are saying they were cool with you doing figure 8 over the LZ and going into your landing approach?
Did you land well,,, that's all that matters,,,, learning, judging glide angles,,your sink rate,,(not to mention fences, power lines,,the list goes on,,takes time,,(with a healthy margin for error) safe flying
flew my first mounting last November. stopped ever since it started to rain. Now Im sitting here crying, waiting for the rain to stop and watching you fly.
Daniel! I can totally relate to what you are going through.. I started taking classes in the summer 2021. That winter was so difficult to get through with very little practices. This past winter also was extremely difficult without air time over three months. I got myself into lots of fitness related routines during that time which has helped me to distract myself from getting too frustrated about not flying. I get it 100% get it. One of my good pilot friends told me, after she did her tenth flights at Lookout she felt relaxed. No longer went crazy about flying. We’ll get there one day. We are just still too excited and inpatient. Getting disciplined is a huge part of this sport. We are in the midst of that.
Well done! I have 500+ hours paragliding paramotoring in Europe and Australia, sadly never USA. and on final approach we do a few s turns to lose height, better to be too high than too low. It takes experience to know when you need to turn, you will get better at it. When you did that turn I thought 'oh shit' 😮, but you handled the problem well. Didn't panic and still managed to land on your feet! 😊. Those take off ramps look VERY SCARY! I've never seen a hangie harness like that where you hang down? Is it a training harness? Great take off and landing. I really could feel your joy! 😎 . Have fun.
Thank YOU for this comment. I’m not an instructor or anything but that’s what I’m trying to do. Hoping other beginner fliers find my vid helpful. Appreciate you checking it out and letting me know what you thought🙏
Thank you sweetheart will make it there this summer i have 3 airplanes and a jet but i have never got to fly my hang gliders yet please take care and always be safe 👍❤️
Personally , i think for someone not current , that first landing was not too bad . Yes you did a bit low , but an option i use faced with that is the same as a down wind landing , wheels (legs) up . I've done it many times , following a deliberately landing in very light winds , but once when i got caught on a beach low with no options . I should mention , that i broke both legs summit like 30 years ago , with a motorcycle , so when faced with a down wind landing , i don't even try to land and run it off , i just put it down the wheels . Yes you should pay more attention , pay attention to your flight planning , but let's not forget , even the best laid plans can go wrong . But to my mind , it's how you deal with it , that's the important bit . My advice to you , is don't forget your wheels , it's an option . By the way , i fly a Calypso , and Target , And i'm rated hill , winch , and power , with a doodlebug power unit , and even got involved with training at one point . Don't ask me how many hours i have , because i could tell ya , but at last count when i rated power , i had something like 150 winch launches . Currently like you , i'm not current , i haven't flown since 2019 as i got bogged down with a different task . I'm hoping that will all change in 2024 , when i get over to Spain . But then you are current , keep it up , huh .
Thank you so much for your feedback. Ya I’m aware flaring in turn is not good. I talked to multiple pilots about the option of rolling in. I think my head always prepares myself to flare land. I need to train myself to be more flexible and adoptable in different landing conditions. Many more days, month and years of practices to come!
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Im from a family of pilots and conventional aircraft the Hang gliding bug had got me and I have yet to try it but If I could be totally honest, the hanging by one carabiner messes with my head. Thoughts ?
Thank you for checking out my vid! I get what you are saying.. but that didn’t bother me. I think that’s pretty normal to have that thought when you are considering about starting the training and watching all the flight footage on RUclips… of course you pay attention to things that are concerning to you. Once you start the training, you are flying closer to the surface, lower altitudes, a ton. By that experience that concern will disappear. Your head will be busy learning pitch/roll control of the glider and you’ll more likely be concerned about how to properly flare to land. But I think it’s good to keep your initial concern, because hook in check is probably one of the most important things. That strap and the carabiner are the life line. So hopefully what’s bothering you now will keep you safe by double triple checking that you are hooked in!!
