Have you ever heard of SOLVANG before? Dubbed as "America's Danish Town" for its strong resemblance to Denmark, I truly think that this is the best overall small town in America! It is filled with delicious restaurants and cafes, it has stunning architecture, and is loaded with fun boutique shops that will make you never want to leave! And yes... it really does feel like you are in Denmark :)

@@YahWinUWinlol been to Denmark and looked at the resturaunts ratings in Solvang and... Yea its not remotely Danish, the Danes actually give a shit about the quality of their food... This is a tourist trap through and through.
Everything is based around Copenhagen and not their smaller countryside towns. At least that bakery has Lakrids by Bülow but you can just order those online.
Still waiting to pass my full judgement till I actually visit.. But it def looks awfully trashy compared to the real thing.

Always make me laugh to see them serve "Medisterpølse" (which didn't really look like a medisterpølse anyway) and "Æbleskiver" together - you would never do that in Denmark. 😂 There's another "Danish" town founded in 1901 in Iowa - Elk Horn. They have a windmill which was moved from my birthplace, Nørre Snede, in Denmark to their town in 1976. Elk Horn is known as "Denmark on the Prairie" - which is kind of funny because the annual town party in Nørre Snede is called the "prairie party"....

The area was originally inhabited by the Chumash, but as part of the mission system expansion by Spanish missionaries, Father Estévan Tapís founded Mission Santa Inés as he mentioned, in order to relieve overcrowding at Mission Santa Barbara and Mission La Purísima Concepción since it was located midway between the two. However this community around the mission was abandoned after the US conquered California. Danes wouldn't come to the area until 1910 when Danish-Americans created the Danish-American Colony Company in San Francisco. Later that year, suitable land was found in the Santa Ynez Valley and thus they founded Solvang in 1911
As he mentioned, most of Solvang's buildings were initially built in the Spanish-style, but after World War II, interest grew in the concept of a European timber-style village. The pioneer of the so called "Danish Provincial style" was Ferdinand Sorensen, originally from Nebraska. In the mid-1940s, after returning to Solvang from a trip to Denmark, he first completed Møllebakken, his Danish-styled home, and then went on to build the first of the village's four windmills. A little later, Earl Petersen, a local architect, gave the older buildings a new look, adding façades in "Danish Provincial" style. Buildings in the half-timbered style of Danish rural houses proliferated, creating a new tourist attraction. Even Danish royalty like Prince Henrik paid a visit!

This is similar to how there's a Bavarian alpine-style town called Helen in Georgia! Helen was platted in 1912, and named after the daughter of a lumber official. The town was incorporated in 1913. Before becoming a bustling Bavarian Alpine village, Helen was once home to the Cherokee people. Eventually, the area became a logging town. The logging industry kept Helen at the center of commerce in Georgia with the Matthews Lumber Company sawmill leading the boom. By the 1930s, the timber company and the sawmill abandoned the town of Helen, and residents left for other opportunities.
The US government created the Chattahoochee National Forest, which brought both tourism and additional lumber opportunities to Helen through the 1950s. Unfortunately, business wasn’t booming, so in 1968, two major local businessmen, Pete Hodkinson and Jimmy Wilkins, found a way to uplift their town after hearing of a nearby town finding success by renovating and updating their downtown storefronts. With the help of local artist, John Kollack, who had previously spent time in Bavaria, this became Georgia’s Little Bavaria. And the vibe fits perfectly with the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop!

Good video. It was very fun to watch.
It looks a bit like a tourist town in Jutland (western Denmark), near the beach. However, the beach is missing...
And then there had to be a pølsevogn ( hot dog cart) with cold "Cocio" (coco milk) in the town...
Æbleskiver and vaniljekranse (vanilla cookies) are something we eat together, at Christmas time, when we are having "hygge". - not something, we go to a restaurant to eat.

Aarhus, Denmark, here 🇩🇰. Many people are critical, but take it for what it is - a bit like Las Vegas. A sort of idyllisized clone of something Danish-German-medieval Disneyland experience. Of course, it cannot be "Danish" as it is situated in California. But you can buy some authentic Royal Copenhagen porcelain, eat an Æbleskive and get an idea about the Rundetårn/Round Tower. If you want to see what Denmark is really like, there is no way around booking a plane ticket. But as an "appetizer", why be so serious about its "artificial setup"? And ... If you can't or won't go to "real" Denmark, there are also plenty of videos, websites, Google Street Views to check out.

Im a Dane, and while on vacation in the US here in summer 2023 I visited the city, and let me tell you, it is just a tourist trap. The city only pretends to be danish, with old "danish" looking buildings, and most of the people I met working in the various shops and restaurants had no similiation to Denmark, while I didnt ask for nationality, most looked latin-american. So while its a weird town to visit, your title is definetely wrong. My family and I were actually really dissapointed with the town, as we expected there to be some parts of the danish culture and traditions.

It doesn't look like Denmark at all. Danes have never and will never eat æbleskiver and medisterpølse together, that's an American invention and a very disgusting one. A lot of Danes laugh at those people in Solvang and Elk Horn whos have a very distorted picture of what Denmark and Danes are like.
