Dave danced around the advice this lady needed to hear. It's called sacrifice. If you want to win at finances you need to sacrifice in the short term to win in the long term.
@@rolandalbert680 Don't feel bad, I went to the school of dumb decisions also.
Sacrifice does not work when the numbers don't add up!!! No they might have an income issue not a give up a little for long term problem. WTF long term could be anything in terms of outcome because there are more factors in the long term!!!!

I was a slow learner. It took me more like a full year to hone my budget to where now, I have backups for the backups. I don't have everything I want, but I find I have everything I NEED.
Every month our budget was thrown off by some surprise $400 bill. First it was a car repair, then kids' camp, then tuition, then furnace breakdown, then traffic ticket...
Finally we accepted that there is ALWAYS going to be some $400 nuisance, and we included that in our monthly budget.
This is so smart! I need to have something like this in my budget, too
How is a traffic ticket a surprise or tuition or kids camp ...dont get a traffic ticket in first place and you know you have kids stuff to pay for none of that is a surprise but nice try

I mind boggling how many people can get to adulthood and cannot budget, and have little to no regard to the future for things that are likely to happen like a flat tire.
In 1980, my first job out of university, $100K
by the mid 90's, $250K.
You don't have to budget, if you make more money than you can spend.
I'm retired now, my pension is more than I can spend.
My wife and I don't really sit down and budget. All we do is use logic and self control. We spend way less than what we make and move money to savings, investment and retirement before we spend on wants. It's not rocket science.

People can't possibly budget when groceries, gas, and everything else are going up in price daily. My groceries cost more than my mortgage. I've started grocery shopping only twice a month instead of weekly. My cupboard is almost empty, and we dont waste anything. I've sacrificed my meals so others can eat. This economy sucks for the working class.

I always hear a lot of people saying they got to work two jobs to get by but when I look at how they live their life, they always have a brand new car every couple of years and they’re always going on trips, but they can never afford to make ends meet. It’s like people that don’t have money, try to live like they have money when in reality, they don’t. My dad used to always tell me “your bills come first before anything else”. I don’t think anyone was ever told that line. I think it’s only a very few people that were told that line.

This is a fair call, but the more responsible person would go back on their expenses 6-12 months to make sure they catch all their periodic expenses. When semi-annual car insurance hits, when an annual expense hits, etc. Obviously an app can help with that.
Dave you are a wrecking ball for personal growth
I am currently 21, debt free, and have a significant chunk of money saved up. I am a Masters student and should be able to graduate debt free. Should I invest some of this money for the long run in a Roth IRA? Or should I keep it in savings for future expenses as I move out? I have a stable car, living situation, and job.
Follow the plan, I'm only 31 and have adjusted the plan for the UK, and it really does work. Stay out of debt, 3-6 months of expenses and invest the rest.
Follow the baby steps , get 3-6 of emergency fund before Roth IRA
I smell a scam/spam bot
Emergencies ae for surprises such as your car blowing up, medical emergency, etc.. Your bills are not an emergency because they should be paid ahead as much as possible. But it's had to get ahead when you are addicted to drugs, alcohol, shopping, and vacations.

You shouldn't call the ex a jerk. Based on the information available, divorced and remairred in year and had to fight for custody. Balance of probabilities is that she initiated the divorce to move in her her new boyfriend, now husband.
80% of divorces are initiated by women not men.The poor women were bored or needed to "find themselves". They don't care that their children are desperately missing their daddies!!

@@JudePi-jx7yo You are delusional
Me a man. Got divorced 1990. Still single 2024
The other commenter is right, statistically men are much more likely to remarry after divorce or death of a spouse, and when they do, it's typically much faster than their female counterparts. There are a lot of reasons for that, including the fact that these older single men are more desirable on the dating market than older single women, and that men typically rely on a romantic partner more for emotional and domestic support than women do. Women can be happier single if they have deep friendships with other women. Married men are happier, richer, and live longer than single men. Married women are on average unhappier, die sooner, but are richer than single women. There's more upside for men, so they're making a rational choice to couple up again.
@@rachelmaddowswife8713 interesting. I know young Widows and it's mixed. Those with children re-married fast. Single often never did. Huge life insurance also delays re-marriage.

“We only go out to eat once a week” 😂😂
An iterative process- making any budget. We pay all bills from bank BillPay withdrawals. That forms the skeleton for cash outflows. And we deposit funds on the first of each month to pay that budget. We use credit cards for discretionary like food and gas. And Amazon. We pay that credit card twice a month in full. And we keep saying we will spend less next month knowing we won’t. We need to do better with credit card.
Use credit cards for everything and use cash back to pay back the balance and use your own funds to cover the difference, saving you money (not really) because the amount of money you spent had fees that offset the cash back.
@@wewhoareabouttodiesaluteyo9303 maybe right. We pay in full thus have no fees that we know of. We watch our statements and see cash awards being posted . So far we have $2500 cash awards and $0 interest. How about you?
@@2023Red No, the businesses tack on the "fees" through increased prices to offset the cash back.
For instance, you either pay more for something because the merchant knows they will have to absorb the cash back % or you will have to pay a transaction fee on top of a bill like water or electricity. It is usually those $2.95 along with the actual balance you owe.
If you get 1% cash back, that means they are still making $1.95 if you only had to pay $100 electric or water bill.

"We" and "our" refers to the current couple. I think she was trying to be clear, if she said "our children", people might assume she's talking about children that she and her current husband had. She's making it clear that the budget she and her current husband are trying to stick to was upended by a surprise on her end that had nothing to do with the current husband. People who are remarried with kids from a previous relationship will frequently say "my husband's kids are joining us for Thanksgiving this year, and then my kids will be at our home for Christmas". Everyone understands what is meant by that, it doesn't mean the children were created asexually and don't have two biological parents like the rest of us.
This woman may or may not be evil, we don't know from the info given here, people are reading way too much into this.
