I want to make a door to infinity sculpture. So I'm going to fit one-way glass, a giant mirror and LEDs into a door frame and mount it on my apartment wall, Outrageous DIY style. Can I solder the rope lights to turn on with a switch when the door opens? Will the sculpture agree with me and stay in the perfect spot on the wall to use my previously placed doorstop? Or will I waste 11 days on a fail?

for anyone else working with LEDs like those, the colours are usually: Black - shared + voltage (12 or 24), Red - the ground for the red leds, Green - the ground for the green leds, Blue - the ground for the blue leds. meaning you can switch all of them off by using a relay or one of those door switches on just the black wire

Looks like you bought the door in the Milwork department at Home Depot. Next time you are trying a project like this, ask the Milwork associate for assistance.
They could have explained a Passive door handle (1 side only), the R/O measurement for installing the door, why you should not remove the black plug that keeps the door frame secure, etc. These guys & girls are my go to on all projects because they are usually retired with a huge base knowledge on several departments.

Each color represents a different positive wire in the led lineup. The grounds of each of the relays can be linked together and then each one of the colored wires can be soldered to each relay and the ground linked to one side of the reed switch and the other end back through to the last relay. That way you only need 1 reed switch and 3 relays.

Fellow artist here! You’re the MOST determined artist I’ve ever seen. It’s truly inspiring to watch. I give up on long term projects all the time & it’s frustrating. My friends think it’s my fear of failure…OR is it my fear of success? I don’t exactly know. Anyway, love SO many mediums that I find it hard to focus on just one…so in turn, I do nothing at all. I’ll go long stretches w/out creating anything. It really bums me out. Thank you for showing me that it’s ok to hop around to different projects & mediums. The life & mind of an artist is a tricky path to follow, but I wouldn’t change it! Your determination, passion, vision, enthusiasm, positivity, puns, quirks & pure joy makes me wanna create! So again, thank you…for simply doing YOU!

For the tack strips on your rug frame try using a pool noodle. You could probably even cut it into fourths (long ways) to not need as many to cover your jumbo frame. It only needs to be thick enough to cover the tacks plus a little cushion. That way no more accidental injuries just by walking by it.
    Hope this helps

hindsight is 20/20, but you could have just cut the trim on the door frame instead of the wall. You could do this by using some thin trim, spacing the mirror and creating a frame for it inside the door frame as well. This would help reinforce the mirrors into the frame preventing them from falling out, and save the damage on the wall.

you could have hot glued the plexiglass into the frame to keep it in place, or perhaps a spray adhesive. General rule of not wanting things to move is to make them not move. Clear packing tape may have also worked to keep the entire thing rigid until you moved the frame into the final location. Sweet door though. Cool idea I might put in my house.

So, heads up from someone who works in Electrical, recessed door switch. It's less than $20, a single piece, you do need to need to make the hole on hinge side but it's just an on off switch so you can wire your LEDs power leg after the switch and the converter power in before it to hide it outside of the doorway (possibly behind it) and don't need the door to look any more bulky than normal.
Now also from my experience in home building, they make a 1way door handle. No modifications needed, it's used for small hall closets.

The led string has 4 wires - red, blue, green, and common. If you switched the common it turns off all colors.
There are also RGBW which have 5 wires.

For the rug frame thingy with the tacks pointing out, pool noodles. Just press one on each side as a bumper. Or if you have any extra foam from the foam room

Nice idea with the Relay and Reed Switch.... EXCEPT:
You're switching the 'Output' of the controller! That means it's powered 24/7, which is NOT IDEAL.
A much better (and safer) way would be to re-connect all the wires you cut. Then cut and put the Relay board on one of the wires coming from the PSU (Wall Wart).
    - TBH: I'm shocked your "Engineer" friend didn't suggest that from the start.

Thanks for the instructions on how to view the second coat going on the frame, but is it possible you could put a 𝄆 chapter mark at 2:35 and a 𝄇 chapter mark at 3:04, so we can follow along properly with the sections repeated? Thanks so much!

I think the main issues stem from not using a multimeter, and using a srd-05vdc-sl-c module, which is set up for 5 volts.

Wouldn't it be beter if you first put a thin sheet of mdf or something on the back of the door frame, so you don't have to struggle with it falling apart and mirrors derailing and stuff. If you're gonna keep the bottom open anyways, you could have slid in the layers from the bottom...
Also, looking at the way you were cutting the frame moulds, it seems like you are in desparate need of a Japanese woodworking saw. I got one for 35 bucks and have been using it for years now. Super worth it!
Love the video, love the Channel!! :)

The whole time that I watched you maneuver the door and have stuff fall out, I kept thinking to myself, one bar clamp across the bottom would alleviate all of these issues. It wouldn't have been as fun though lol
    Very cool project.
