I said it elsewhere -- and it was great to hear Kelly Slater confirm my thoughts -- but I see a ton of Gerry Lopez in Moana Jones Wong's surfing. She has a very similar approach, she is extremely quiet in how she sets her line, and she has this elegance in the barrel that reminds me so much of Lopez. This was a wonderful win for her.
First ever women’s Pipe Master on top of her HIC Pipe win. Her place is cemented in surfing history.
What an amazing run, and win, for this young woman. I remember sitting on the beach at Ehukai with my camera in 2018, snapping pics of the fun-size surf, when Moana - just a teenager at the time - put on such a show I ran up to her afterwards to see if she wanted the pictures. She’s got a heart of gold, and is now a bonafide Pipe legend.

Good for Moana! $80k for a day's work surfing a wave she already enjoys surfing while beating the world champ too. That's pretty much the dream right there

Watching Kelly the Goat close out a perfect 30 year career at Pipe, and Moana sweep in and seize the crown as a North Shore wildcard, what perfection!
Can’t remember Carissa having such a low score in any heat let alone being combo’d at the end of one.
She had an off session that’s for sure.
But that doesn’t take away from Moana’s win.
She was fearless and virtually cut the Pipe to shreds.

I think 2022 is a great year for Surfing. A wildcard go by the name of Moana just change the perspective on Women surfing especially on the wave of consequence like Pipe, no one deserves it but those you put there time, life on the line and respect. Then there's this guy "The Goat" disregarded the thing called Age and proved that he is the descendant of Poseidon. I also appreciate and inspired when Kelly is calling heats, he has the perfect analysis of what's going on. Congratulations to the 2022 Pipe Pro Champions.
My god. That last barrel was perfect. She stalled with her hand on the take-off and backdoored it. Inspirational.
Watched this whole contest live and she was just amazing every ride she took. Not on small waves either, some of those were just insane.

Since I see another man here commenting the truth, I figured I should opine too, for the sake of a more balanced universe if nothing else:
I’m shocked Riss was shutdown first. Damn!! But I’m not super impressed by Moana’s victory frankly. I mean she can obviously time Pipe well and hold a safe line, but there’s not much in the way of style nor technicality in the barrel. Kinda reminds me of skating as a kid, there was always that one kid that could 360 flip, but never learned a kick-flip. Idk. The waves Riss did catch required a far higher level of skill in the barrel to navigate her way out. Maybe Riss should’ve just selected less challenging waves, not gotten deep, and just went straight on a safe, shallow, line. That’s like the new standard it appears (feels like we’re just rewarding girls now for being girly and able). Kinda bums me out truthfully (that this is the new standard for women), despite that I’m genuinely happy for Moana. I think it’s great for Moana personally, I bet it feels amazing, she’s probably truly inspired, and at an all time high, but it’s not so great for the bigger picture that is female surfing in my opinion (The standard for barrel riding for women should reflect something more like what Steph achieved in Indo).
Then again Riss just didn’t answer back anyways, so irrespective of how it should be scored, Moana had won. 🤷 So a big congrats to her. She’s young and has a lot of time to work on the rest.
Also, side note: lot of talk about Slater’s victory...is there anyone out there that thinks he played it safe and won? He put on a world class act, took risks, and won. I don’t think there was one wave he selected that was just gonna be an easy make. Just saying.
Was CM even in the heat?
US Sports needs to pay attention to these athletes the are raised live and work in the US yet compete for other countries. Pay, prestige, door to Olympics - what - such a huge opportunity sliding away
Moana showed from her first wave that she wanted to Win & she continued to dominated the Woman's Finals
with her free style riding Classic Pipeline waves...

Her waves would've been 3's and 4's if she was a guy.
Good size but not deep.
She still would've beat Carissa.
Since there not guys then it's understandable the limitations that are there, both physical and experiential.
@@stephenwolfram356 Yep we can't take away from the fact that they are charging hard and being just as brave despite having less muscle and less testosterone that usually helps take on risks etc. If we were all given female physiology tomorrow we'd look up to these girls even more. Mad respect to all the chargers at pipe, all the girls that pulled into closeouts and took some heavy drops. Nothing but respect for anyone that dares to take on that reef.

Moana wins pipe but doesn’t really get barreled? Tyler Wright gets engulfed by a monster for an 8.8 and Moana rides a wall and a head dip to get a 7.7? Degree of consequence was so in favor of Tyler and her ride was at least 2.5 points better. Carissa’s worst ever finals appearance. Moana rides a wall, ok, a sizable wall, throws the arms in air like she was spat out of a monster and gets 6’s and 7’s? And Carissa couldn’t beat that. Oddest semi and final I have ever seen. But at least Slater deserved his win. Could not fault the judging in his heats

Moana has out a Jerry style out there. Give the ladies pipe for a year, then have them compete against the guys afterwards. The guys can go on trips that year. Of course, guys don't like having their manliness tested, tho, now do they? ... @8:39 through @8:40 -- what a sequence.

You know it has to be said it is pretty ordinary to watch this in such average conditions, funny how the ladies get the sloppy seconds when it comes to conditions. The fact that Carissa doesn't even seem to have been able to get a single decent score doesn't say much.
Thanks for the wet blanket that nobody wanted, it was big enough and dangerous enough that only one chick wanted it bad enough and she charged, Moana is pure joy to watch.

The conditions were crap, reality is what it is sometimes and it is just the nature of surfing sometimes, the final deserved better. If the woman can not handle heavy perfect pipe they shouldn't hold the contest there for them neither.
I didnt see a single score over a 4 or 5 tops the entire heat
@@petecabrina Yeah that's what I'm saying. She was scratching for the shoulder like Lakey and Tyler. Riss could have got any Backdoor wave she wanted and got one nice one, same with Tyler, but Moana being goofy had the advantage.
Oddest final ever and Carissa’s worst ever heat. Moana wins with bottom hand turns and a wall climb and no legitimate barrel time at all, not even in the semi? The judging in her semi was weird but at least the final was spot on

None of the other women surf pipe, or when in the lineup, don't get the waves in that crowd. Moana is the only one who's been putting time in for years. But I'm sure you'd roll out of bed and get shacked in a 12 foot Pipe mutant...
