There are many notable recordings of Mahler's 1st symphony, but Abbado's with BPO is the best. Especially the opening of the 4th movement is so electrifying...
@jhyounyo AMEN, AMEN & AMEN !! you are absolutely right my friend. Abbado's conducting of Mahler First (live recording on DG) on his inaugural concert when he assumed the position of music director of Berlin Philharmoniker to succeed late von Karajan was the finest, and most exciting performance I ever know. Not only the opening, the last beatings of timpani at the very end just make you shout fervently in ecstacy : BRAVO !! I absolutely agree with ur comment, I think you understand Mahler.
Well, first of all: a million thanks for this video. Then I must say another thing: your nick is the best ever found on youtube or elsewhere.Of course You can improve it in Wilhelm Sergiu Claudiovonrattle :-)
I am gonna tell you something crazy. There s a horn player in BerlinPhil and he is playing since Karajan!! He saw Karajan , Abbado,Rattle and Petrenko (he is still in the orchestra) !! His name is Stefan de Leval Jezierski and Member since 1978-09-01.İt is Really amazing.
@@christiangeller1414 Yes indeed - this great oboe player gave an interview here in the UK on the BBC, and I was utterly astonished by his command of English...it was far better than many speak here in the UK. He spoke at huge speed, and not even one slight error.
@@antoineduchamp4931 Mr. Schellenberger was, while member of the BPhO, responsible for the marketing and record contracts of the orchestra, so his english had to be very well!
@@christiangeller1414 Thank you Herr Geller for this important information... I am grateful. It was just the standard of fluency that was astounding. The oboe part he played under Karajan in the Schubert unfinished symphony was some of the finest oboe playing I have ever heard in my life. Do you miss the sound of the 'old' Berlin Philharmonic as much as me?

R.I.P, Maestro Claudio Abbado

The title is not correct. It should be "Abbado's first rehearsal with BPO as its chief conductor".

The correct title should be"Abbado in Berlin: The First Year", but this is the first rehearsal as chief conductor. True.
Rainer Zepperitz
Is that principal oboist immortal or something? I've seen him since the first day of Abbado till yesterday's Simon Rattle concert...
Nein, das ist Hans-Jörg Schellenberger, inzwischen Professor....

Zep macht was Lustiges bevor er anfängt! Schaut mal bei 1:24.. Er spielt in der Luft!
Er vibriert mit der linken Hand, damit die Saite schwingt, bevor er den Ton anspielt
