    This saves so much fuel and equipment use, we do the same thing, works great cows eat when their hungry and not when we feel like feeding them

    It was a great system too, dead simple to operate and it suited precision chop silage as the cows couldnt waste it, the secret was keep the pit low and long, its easy manage that type feed face and it didnt get time to heat

    I see what you mean! We do self feed silage on our farm also, we also get the overhang and use the loader but it can make a mess!! And i am a big fan of your videos and farm it is fairly similar to mine!

    brings back momeries , works very well with cows as they are trained for life ...... we had bullocks ad to be trained every winter ... cost effective feeding ,,,, keeps you fit also ,,,,

    I don't know what be cheaper for u buying bagger or remoddify ur silage barn so 1st crop be presented first like installing a roller door in back so u can back in to unload? Hope this helps.

    Did this for many years when i was younger. We had a one inch pipe running the full lenght of the face. Maybe simpler was best ? I also remember the silage barriers that were common at that time.

    we used to have a pole , on the ground so they could not pull the silage out under there feet

    Is your herd geared toward Butterfat percentage verses getting as much milk as you can from them?

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  10 лет назад

      Yes we have quite a high butterfat

    • @MrMagnum7220
      @MrMagnum7220 10 лет назад

      We're only about 3.6 bufferfat here in the states. But 70 lbs per cow production.

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  10 лет назад +1

      hi Hans, the face is 45 feet wide. 25 cattle can happily feed from it

    I used to have an old top and bottom bar from an old gate knocked into the silage at waist height on each side as near to the clamp wall as poss, with a piece of old inner tube to tension the electric fence, mark the wall with chalk and move the fence on 4 inches every day, making another mark with chalk, write down every friday with an F and sledge forward the pole each side every 4-5 days, cushty really!!

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  10 лет назад

      nice one. We use a home made piece of kit that hangs from the walls and moves along. 4 inches a day sounds about right

    • @georgedoorley5628
      @georgedoorley5628 6 лет назад +1

      we used buckrake tines , good and springy kept the wire tight , 4 " a day each side with a sledge hammer fast way of feeding no machinery .... but strict pollution laws locally made us go to all indoors in slatted sheds no yards to scrape ,,,, do not miss that job

    • @peternelly3879

      Saw somewhere that you need to dimension it for the nr of cows. They aimed for 15 cm eaten per day.

  • @philipblass6544

    I have been reading abouf silage feeding. One item i read talked face management to reduce spoilage losses. How much of your face is eaten in one day

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  9 лет назад

      maybe a few inches a day

    • @philipblass6544
      @philipblass6544 9 лет назад

      thefunkyfarmer from what i have read, if you put a wall down the middle of your clamp and only feed one side at a time, your daily milk production might increase as there would be less spoilage. You should check with your local agricultural expert.

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  9 лет назад

      Philip Blass you could be right but with self feed like this we need the width to allow all the cows to get to the clamp

  • @MrMagnum7220
    @MrMagnum7220 10 лет назад +1

    Too bad you can't have an "edge" to push up with the silage. Keep silage away from feet.

    • @thefunkyfarmer
      @thefunkyfarmer  10 лет назад

      Yes I know what you mean. Luckily the electric fence keeps them back enough to stop them trampling the silage they are eating

  • @logster04
    @logster04 10 лет назад

    How many clamps do you have

    • @thefunkyfarmer

      2,one for grass silage, the other for maize

      hi Tom, sometimes i use the loader to flick a bit out but it can make a mess of the silage face doing it that way

    Sorry man i do know whats wrong with your silage the way your storing it first crops being eaten last,it should be eaten first that cut down your feed loss.Eaten in order of harvest would shorten its store time.Sorry my head wasn't on straight. You wouldn't drink milk from newest to oldest lol.My guess your butter fat pretty good than tappers down.My appologies again just came to me.Switch to bagging mark bags in order of crop feed in order .1st,2nd,3rd,fourth.If it was corn ur storage would smell like wiskey.

    This seems like a very imprecise, inefficient and limited method of feeding
    cattle. Plus, the cattle don't look all that impressed.
