  • Spirit Eye Cave (41PS25) is a heavily occupied cave system located in Presidio County, Texas, just north of the Chinati Mountains. The system consists of upper and lower entrances that lead to a central U-shaped main chamber that connects with smaller internal horizontal and vertical shaft systems, all of which were occupied. Two seasons of fieldwork at, and the assessment of, private collections from Spirit Eye Cave focus current research on a diversity of topics that span the duration of maize use on the Big Bend of the Rio Grande, transhumance patterns, perishable technologies, and ancient plant and human DNA studies all in the context of research at looted sites. This talk by Dr. Bryon Schroeder covers the history of Spirit Eye Cave, the ongoing research, and the goals of future fieldwork and preservation.
