One of the things I realized about her mask is that it is referencing a science demonstration for sound waves. It's an experiment where a black board is placed over a speaker. Salt is spread on the board and when different sound frequencies are played through the speaker, the salt changes into different patterns corresponding to the sound waves. It's a very cool way to visualize sound waves and adds an amazing little detail to the character design.

For a character usually meant to work only in comic books that because a "basic" screamer kind of super power, this shit was done masterfully. The intense bass, the shaking tones; it's a really great sound design, almost JoJo-levels of creativity I'd say.

@@Number9RoboticThey would have to set up the movies/live adaptations theme to a more dark narrative and setting to make it work, and make Onomatopoeia a more mysterious villain.
Well yeah, since Canary and Siren can only scream. Peia can mimic sounds and voices, and the sounds actually affect the person the same way the real thing would
I never understand why they never just had the character use 'Finger guns' and when they said "Blam" it just shot a bullet-less round. Or saying "Boom" which would make the object in thought, explode

Regarding the sound design of her powers, I think it’s an interesting choice to almost always have audible oscillation while she’s using the powers. It makes it easy to imagine a large sound wave or thousands of sound waves interfering with each other to create a more stable vibration/frequence. Personally I feel because of this sound design, it feels less like scream = loud, and more like controlling sound waves as if they were a physical thing
Dude holy shit this villain looks and sounds so fucking cool. Like her suit/mask design, the sound design, her overall powers and usages too. Even without her suit and her just screaming the effect still looks and sounds pretty awesome. This is the first time that I've seen a "screamer" power look really cool in live action.
I think that if the actor lip synced onomatopeias (such as bang or "blam" for when she shoots with sound) or made the waves sound like the sound it has the properties of, it would be way creepier.
Yes but when Supermans son got hurt it was amazing how he just sorted it out in seconds which means with all those attacks on him he was still trying to find a way not to kill them. Because he could have easily used his heat vision right at the beginning of the fight
This show was so good. Stayed true to the inspiration of the comics while updating just enough to make it work as a modern TV show, and they certainly didn't skimp on the budget. Even Kevin Smith said there was probably no good way to make Onomatopoeia work outside of the comics page, since the character saying "blam" and "boom" and stuff wouldn't work, but they managed to make it not only work but be even slightly more impressive than the comics - a character who can actually manipulate sound is just a great idea to put against Kryptonians.
@@manuelito1233 It it honestly sounds like she got screwed a touch by her own run time - they started out with cool stuff like bullets and e plosions but as time passed it just became a scream, with specific sfx being saved for a few choice moments (That chainsaw one was nuts)
Hollywood is not creative with their powers. I think only Ant Man had me think that's creative! But that too got lost in Quantumania. It's feels like all just end up in energy blast. Compared to that Anime have better application of powers. The Coffin In Sky in MHA is pretty genius use of powers.
@@Vor567tez I think its due to budget concerns - like its easier to spam the same sound/visual than try and be unique each and every time. Environmental interactions, unique sounds or visuals, all take more money - which can be rough on a show who's gimmick relies on sfx budget Think about how early or low budget shows would just recycle the same "uses ability in a area without a background" or like how Star Trek literally basically had static props that they cut between and stuff
Wish they would've kept up with the "sound effects he makes happens idea" kinda like the speech guy from JJk or Nico Minaru from Marvel. They did the awesome gunshots thing at the beginning then just devolved her to be a lame Black Canary.
Heres a really good idea for this villain! Make him a mimicry guy! I like the idea of his superpower being mastery over sound and all that. Calling people with other peoples voices and acting like hes got a finger over the mute button
She went from a really cool scary villain to a woman who screams a lot. This is why the way villains take of their mask is important. Still a cool character tho.
I think it would'a been better if they stuck to the whole "saying the sound" the mundane and silliness gains a sort of new layer of scary. Sort of like hiro from inuyashiki.
I wish she did more like the first scene where you hear bullets but there's no bullets. like if you could hear fire and things burn. she's just a cooler banshee lol
Really disappointing how she very quickly devolves into just screaming at people, the gunshots at the beginning were a super cool interpretation; and that as soon as the mask comes off it's forgotten about, just obliterates any menace she had and just makes her looks ridiculous.
If you listen closely the 11th doctors regeneration sound effect from Doctor Who can be heard right at the end of the video. I’m just saying this because a lot of movies and shows have been using that exact sound for multiple energy effects.
I think that maybe the skill set changed with the medium changing so more powers became available, before there was only text to represent/convey sound but now there's a physical soundwave emitted since now there's actual audio
One of the things I realized about her mask is that it is referencing a science demonstration for sound waves. It's an experiment where a black board is placed over a speaker. I love that mask. It's like mixing cimatic images and a Rorschach test
RORSCHACH! From WATCHMEN! That who she reminds me of.
a shame post reveal she jsut stops wearing it for some reason
Rorschach and Tobi from Naruto.
I was expecting words like "BAM" "POW" "WOOSH!" To appear on screen like the old batman show
I’m obsessed with her powers🤩
They're actually very original
I like how she doesn’t just scream but also manipulates sound
@@yesikanarvaez5027definitely amazing character
5:47 why did this make me burst out laughing?
Made me absolutely crack up when Superman came in and just yelled "STOP!!" like an angry dad XD
The costume and sound are pretty cool, but I kinda feel like they should have used Silver Banshee since that character actually has sonic scream powers and is a Superman villain to boot too.
This video had me hooked until the mask came off, the anonymity and lack of a human expression with that mask selled the whole thing.
Honestly, she had a really good arch
"Arch"?
That mask is scary and intimidating I think this is a great character considering it's CW but I honestly don't think I'm giving them enough credit
For a character usually meant to work only in comic books that because a "basic" screamer kind of super power, this shit was done masterfully. The intense bass, the shaking tones; it's a really great sound design, almost JoJo-levels of creativity I'd say.
1:22 AMAZING acting right there!
Clicked expecting a serial killer talking in sound efects and got...Silver Banshee with drip???
Exactly, this one just doesn’t work.
lol a person saying "woosh", "shing", and "blam" is substantially lamer said out of a human's voice in live-action than it does in comic books. They absolutely had to change the concept, and I think this is an awesome interpretation of "supervillain who imitates sounds".
@@Number9Roboticok but then why use it on a way that is jsut another already existing character?
@@spinosaurusstriker It’s not really, sure there are characters that weaponize sound, but it’s mostly just screaming really loud, while she manipulates sound of all kinds. Using a preexisting character, with a standing Trademark, who is themed around sound, and doesn’t work in live-action, is just smart branding.
@@Number9RoboticThey would have to set up the movies/live adaptations theme to a more dark narrative and setting to make it work, and make Onomatopoeia a more mysterious villain.
Onomatopoeia scream like a Exploud and Guzzlord
I think her power can Destory Black Canary And Black Siren Easily.
Indeed and 100%
Well yeah, since Canary and Siren can only scream. Peia can mimic sounds and voices, and the sounds actually affect the person the same way the real thing would
Definitely! But kinda wished she had more combat skills…
By super powers? Yes. But Black Canary is oneof the best hand to hand Fighter in DC and has fought other sound weilding enemies and won.
Onomatopoeia versus Black Bolt would be interesting.
She can make things float with with the right sound I assume 0:55
A power thats a threat to super man like this is rare
Through sheer brute force, without having to cater to one of his usual weaknesses or vulnerabilities? Yep.
They could’ve used Silver Banshee, just saying.
2:03 That's how you know he's extremely villainous, he doesn't eject the USB-drive first.
1:09 this is voice acting worthy of gal gadot
5:55 ok, that's just straight out of a horror movie, make the mouth a little wider with neck cracking sounds and it'll be terrifying
I like the idea of each different sound “effect”not vibration is a different *type* of attack
4:33
Movie onomatopoeia: RAAARRRR
Comic onomatopoeia: stab *Stabs u with knife* stab *stabs u with knife*
I never understand why they never just had the character use 'Finger guns' and when they said "Blam" it just shot a bullet-less round. Or saying "Boom" which would make the object in thought, explode
"You see, I don't *see* like you do. I emit a sonic wave from my mouth..."
Great video Rafael Ridolph :]
I so glad they took this villain and gave them the power they deserved - I know not every villain needs to be "super" to work, but come on they were practically written for it, its so creativeee
That one kill where dude got killed using a chainsaw sfx was amazing cause they didnt even need to show it, you just hear it and you know bro is done
I’m glad Onomatopoeia is getting more recognition recently
Regarding the sound design of her powers, I think it’s an interesting choice to almost always have audible oscillation while she’s using the powers. It makes it easy to imagine a large sound wave or thousands of sound waves interfering with each other to create a more stable vibration/frequence.
Personally I feel because of this sound design, it feels less like scream = loud, and more like controlling sound waves as if they were a physical thing
what a interesting and cool villain, holy.
one of my favorite "superhero" villains ever
Damn, the vfx is top notch
A fight scene between her and a comic book accurate Black Canary would be incredible!
So this guy is basically Koichi's stand Echoes, and that's his thing
"S-H-I-T!"
I don't care if it's not accurate to the comics, that's sick as fuck
I remember when Kevin Smith introduced Onomatopoeia in Green Arrow. This is very cool interpretation
Jesus, she is HAUNTING
Edit: okay, well, she was haunting with the mask, which, ngl, i thought was her face
I think that if the actor lip synced onomatopeias (such as bang or "blam" for when she shoots with sound) or made the waves sound like the sound it has the properties of, it would be way creepier.
This gave me The Spot in Across the Spider-verse vibes
Reminds me of spell binder from
Batman beyond.
Shriek plus Spellbinder, yeah.
the other way around, this guy is "new" they use Beyond as inspiration in the design
talking about comics
@@Morfe02 your right.
Holy shit Onomatopiea is in this show?! Stopped watching after boring season 1 but now we gotta hop back in. Such a great villain
can we take a minute to appreciate the sound mixers and designer’s for onomatopoeia?
Yes but when Supermans son got hurt it was amazing how he just sorted it out in seconds which means with all those attacks on him he was still trying to find a way not to kill them. Because he could have easily used his heat vision right at the beginning of the fight
In the comics he'd never go against Superman since he was just a regular dude who killed non-power superheroes. It works here though
Def should add him into the next Batman Arkham game. Also fun fact in the comics they were going to be in the Suicide Squad but were deemed to insane
This is such a cool way to do it
This show was so good.
2:28 inyalowda wellwalla turned beltalowda!
Holy shit it's Fred!
Man, this show looks a lot better than I thought it would be.
The range in her powers beats all otber sonic screamers
As neat as this was they shouldve stuck with the character replicating sounds to make effects like the gunshots. Sonic screams was kind of lame.
I personally saw it as that, she's manipulating sound to do things like that. I think as more of her was shown, it just defaulted to screams
Environmental interactions, unique sounds or visuals, all take more money - which can be rough on a show who's gimmick relies on sfx budget
Think about how early or low budget shows would just recycle the same "uses ability in a area without a background" or like how Star Trek literally basically had static props that they cut between and stuff
Onomatopoeia sounds similar to Ονοματοποιεία, the process of making a word/words that imitate the sound(s) they describe
Cool redesign.
This is the closest we may ever get to Shriek from Batman Beyond in live action!
I wish she did more like the first scene where you hear bullets but there's no bullets. like if you could hear fire and things burn. she's just a cooler banshee lol
I like that they gave him powers in the show even though he should never be in a superman show in the first place.
The sound design though...amazing.
Glad to finally see some good villain design in a CW show.
Bang.
Holy crap, they did the impossible. They actually made this character work in live-action.
all he does in the comics is just say whatever sound effect is being made before doing it like saying "bang" as he shoots a weapon
When she took off the mask she went from being cool and creepy to just looking stupid when she mimes screaming at someone.
What in the red hell...
I know someone else who did this interpretation of Onomatopoeia.
MrZoat, half a decade ago, with his Orange Lantern story!
Was Superman being hit with sound waves?
That low drone that happens whenever she is around is as intimidating as the Prowlers cue
THANKS
Really disappointing how she very quickly devolves into just screaming at people, the gunshots at the beginning were a super cool interpretation; and that as soon as the mask comes off it's forgotten about, just obliterates any menace she had and just makes her looks ridiculous.
So a female Black Bolt, nice.
If you listen closely the 11th doctors regeneration sound effect from Doctor Who can be heard right at the end of the video. I’m just saying this because a lot of movies and shows have been using that exact sound for multiple energy effects.
That circle face really disturbed me until I learned it was a mask.
I think that maybe the skill set changed with the medium changing so more powers became available, before there was only text to represent/convey sound but now there's a physical soundwave emitted since now there's actual audio
Had him pop-locking in the beginning😂
