I thought I had seen this video before and also thought that there was a lot more videos of Peter's Vitesse restoration. To be honest I didn't pick up on the Trev's Blog reference before but that is another great channel.

Yes you make a very good point. Reading other comments it looks really Peter grinds back the galv before welding but even so I think I would have a decent respirator on too.
Another one here who was pissed off when all your Vitesse and GT6 videos disappeared. The cars were of no particular interest but the techniques were brilliant and helped me with my project. Nice to see you back.

I highly recommend Wurth Bright Zinc weld thru primer: one of the few that actually works well with spot and plug welding. It doesn't seem to burn out so much as flow then solidify again. One can goes a long way. I buy them 12 at a time at roughly £7 each, so excellent value for the quality. Completely agree about the cheap bead-rollers: hopeless on 1.2mm steel, which is almost all classic car work.
@@peterdunne8107 Very true, also true we all like shiny new toys, assuming pennies available. You can't beat finding a solution to a problem using what's available to hand.

Superb, thank you. I just made a similar panel for a TR6 (front bulkhead to wheel tub) but I welded the rounded flange and then ground the weld off. It worked fine but this method is much better, much faster and less risk when grinding. I’ve two more to do and will try this method. Very good video.
@@peterdunne8107 tried it last night, worked nice. I did three little panels, first one marked up a little with the ball pein, managed to planish most of it out with hammer and dolly but as it turns out I had stupidly turned the flange the wrong side anyway. So then made one for each side very successfully using a slightly different hammer technique, no marks and planished up beautifully. Great method, thanks again.
Enjoyed this presentation. The frustrating element to restoration work is fighting the desire to improve on the imperfect design elements that lead to these moisture traps & high corrosion areas. That struggle would drive me nuts! TR4 & Stagg were significant features of my late teenage years.
Hi Peter, great what you are doing and you make it look so easy (which of course it isnt) i have a Vitesse MK2 which some bad rust in places - one in particular is the rear boot floor where the rear chassis bults through - have you tackled this area as the Panel is strengthened. would be good to see video if you have - thanks for putting all you work on RUclips.

It does help to turn up the power on your welder when welding galvanised steel. Also it's best to grind off the galvanise where you are going to weld first. Also you will need to use Etch primer on the galvanised steel before painting.
You can weld galvanised steel just as any other steel as long as you grind off the galvanising in the area where you do the welding. Believe me I've been doing it for 55 years.
Hi Peter, great fabrication and welding tips, a bit surprised you don't etch prime/paint on the inside of the flanges and hard to get at bare metal prior to welding, any particular reasons you do it this way, I always use weld through primer to keep Mr Rusty at bay a bit longer 🤞🤞
The panel I was replacing was very rusty heavily pitted but the seems we're not rusty they were over 50 years old if they haven't rusted in the 50 years they've been there it's unlikely it will rust in the next 50 years. plus the panel I used to replace the old panel was galvanised steel no need to waste etch primer on that is there. And in any case after welding and prime paint has been sprayed on, the joint would be seem sealed as it was in the factory before finally painting it. If you look at my other video Vitese Time-lapse restoration you will see I did paint behind the seams where it was necessary.

@@peterdunne8107 I see your point about not needing weld-through primer, but welding galvanised steel is not really for the, erm, non-expert shall we say. If your greatest talent in the garage is losing screwdrivers and dropping spanners, ahem, it's really best left to the professional weldingist.
It's free from a friend who has a sheet metal workshop. I have no problem bending it and if you grind the galvanise off before welding there is no problem Welding it. You do need to etch prime it before painting it with a topcoat.

Never heard of him
Why use galvaized steel.. much harder to bend and poison to weld

Cold rolled steel is more easily shaped
But i suppose free is good !
