www.chow.com Jeremiah "Jere" Gettle has always been passionate about saving seeds. He is the founder of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and speaks to CHOW at his seed bank in Petaluma, California.
It sounds there is lots to learn from this banker. I would like to start a seed bank close to where I live, I already have two years of seeds from my small home-grown veggies, and a farm where I do volunteer and work-for-perks.
I started gardening in 2011. The first seed catalog I ever ordered from was From these guys. The catalog was so beautiful and I'd never seen so much variety. I was hooked! Thanks for making a city girl grow her own vegetables.
going to have to try that technique for saving tomato seeds...let them ferment first....hmmm. i've been spreading them pulp and all on cookie sheets, letting them dry out and then picking them off one at a time...this idea seems much better, i hope it works. thanks for a great videa!
If you ever get the chance to get to Baker Creek Seeds in Missouri, make the effort. It's great! A whole "old western town" with a restaurant and all the old timey (actually working) shops and tradesmen, plus the original seed store. A real nice place for the family and my kids loved all the farm animals all over the place- from long eared rabbits to turkeys.
I took my kids there last year and met him. He is the kindest, coolest person to meet, and sure has a passion for seeds and heirloom vegetables. My kids enjoyed meeting him and he spent a lot of time talking to them about the different rabbits and seeds- he is truly generous with his time.
This guy is so dorky and passionate. It's great! I wish my boyfriend was so crazy over seeds; it would be nice to have someone to gush with. You can get the Baker's Creek seed catalogue for free and I really do recommend it. There are lots of pictures, the descriptions are great, and they even warn you if a part of the plant is poisonous. (I'm looking at you, Datura!) There's even a flower section.
good questions especially the ones concerning monsanto/GE seeds... i've kept a "seed mug" in the fridge for about two years now & am just working to get the garden soil healthier, more loose before i start sowing away. thanks for the vid chow.
wow that's a great for biodiversity. the future is on gm food but we do need a wide sample of genes to choose from. where i work we get most of our samples on the field or small town markets.
I mean how can you hate on this video just seeing how much passion this guy puts into seeds! I am not a fan of gardening or plants but seeing this guys enthusiasm. Wow. Keep going dude!
Might some of the seeds smuggled in be of detriment to local biodiversity? For example, the kudzu is a pest plant that competes with native plants and wipes them out.
I love the Baker Creek seed catalog. I read and reread it. We met Jere once at the Petaluma seed store and he was very sweet and friendly. Keep your eye out for the Heirloom seed expo in santa rosa in september...
when he said seeds revert to their wild parent and "you never know what ur guhna get" i just couldnt get over the Forest Gump reference and the speech inped and i had to stop watching to comment
Though I agree with what he said on Monsanto and their cartoonishly evil schemes, it's actually a common misconception that they sue people for accidental cross-pollinating of their varieties of crops. The court case this misconception arises from was against one single farmer a while ago that they said had knowingly and purposefully planted the seeds of their patented crops. His defense was that they had cross-pollinated with his crops and therefore it wasn't his fault. It was later found that he had in fact been taking the patented seeds and planting them, the cross-pollination was incidental. This kind of court case only happened once and Monsanto got a lot of flak for it, so they haven't tried to do it again. I hate Monsanto, but I hate misinformation more.
***** Other than the many other testimonies of incidental pollination law suits that have been brought forward as well. There is ALSO the fact that any lawsuit that is brought by monsanto also includes a gag order so the people cannot talk without risk of further suits.
Aw man I love this dude, anyone this enthusiastic about something so simple is totally charming to me. Really cool guy.
Dr Cypork You should check out HomeGrownHerbalist.net. We are passionate about plants too.... medicinal plants. :-)
I grew up in Petaluma, CA. I know the building that they are in. It used to be a bank for MONEY. Now it is a bank for CASH CROPS. That is VERY cool.
Love this company. I get all my seeds from them.
I love this guy. I wish I didn't live in a desert. No literally I live in Las Vegas. I have killed more plants than monsanto.

This was my second year ordering from them. Couldn't be happier. Great to sèe why they do it.

This is so cool. It's so weird to imagine all these wonderful fruits and vegetables growing years ago in peoples' gardens. It's really wonderful!
