  • One of Hong Kong’s most divisive Chief Executives, Carrie Lam, has announced that she will not be seeking re-election. She leaves behind a city divided by mass protests and political strife.
    In the aftermath of the tightened civil liberties, including 2020’s National Security Law, Hongkongers are leaving the metropolis in record numbers. Meanwhile, stringent COVID measures have exacerbated the exodus, as foreigners also depart the city in droves.
    All these troubles await the incoming Chief Executive. Can he or she mend the social divides and repair Hong Kong’s status as vibrant, global hub?

      It happened I read some books written by some western scholars about ccp. No matter how you deny. Technically, Xi is elected but not in western way. CCP structure is a kind of mixture of traditional Chinese and modern age characteristics. Preciously, it's a meritorious system. All officials at village and town levels are absolutely elected. But starting with county level, official promotions will come from peer elections, annual inspection, and regular evaluations. To reach top positions, officials need to be tested in different positions at different levels for at least 2-3 decades and pass hundreds of evaluations and elections (it's a very brutal process). That's why CCP officials are well seasoned, comparing with officials publicly elected from western system. Given over 80% of Chinese population is related to CCP (e.g., members, members of affiliated orgs, and family members of CCP members), xi is in fact elected. Before he was finally chosen, dozens of his peers who aimed at the top positions failed the elections and evaluations at certain points of time.

      I think people in China really don't understand anything. It's not only democracy, the court and justice system is independent from the govt. The news media can criticize the govt, which forces the govt to open investigations to find flaws and make improvements, and hold them accountable. Hence, everything is held to a higher standard. That means minimal tofu construction and corruptions. People can trust each other. You don't have to and can't bribe people to get special treatment. In China, written law or notice is one thing, execution is a different story.

      HK's best days are over because it's becoming more like China. HK lost the all 3 legs, independent justice system from the govt, news media that can criticize the govt, and a govt body that comprised of oppositions. Now many news medias are shut down, the court and govt are influenced by China's policy. If the court or the judge disagree, technically the judge could be arrested for treason. In China, there is no debate, you follow orders. The lockdown in Shanghai is a good example of how brutal and inhumane it can be. There is no exception, and the authorities dealing with the situation have very low morality, that's why some decided to kill the pets while the owner is sent to quarantine. The staff didn't even bother asking his supervisor before he killed the pets, or did he?

    • @anti-bullingjames
      @anti-bullingjames 2 года назад +2

      @@johdo9953 I somehow agree with your first part. But I do believe quarantine is necessary. People have the rights to make decisions only under conditions that their decisions don't negatively affect others. It's a pandemic. Young people are fine but this virus is life threatening older and weaker ones. If a person who carries virus but doesn't want to be quarantined, his decision may be death penalty to his grandparents. That was the main reason why there was a spike in both infections and deaths after spring break (young people had week long party). This quarantine approach is strict but I think it is necessary for common good. That's the way to avoid next mill of deaths. We all need to take social responsibilities.

      @Anwarul Adzizi
      Before 1997, British made the most money. For example all buses and trains were imported from Britain. All key positions were held by British. That’s no longer the case after the British were kicked out of Hong Kong in 1997. Money stays with Chinese.
      You see the difference now Chang?
