I'm actually really excited to get my copy through tomorrow now. The idea of a Souls-like that doesn't suck up a million hours of my life is weirdly appealing to me at this stage.
I"m here with you, I liked the Dark Souls franchise, but being a family man now I just couldn't sink the amount of time I wanted into it. I mean, I can play it for tens of hours, but I can't get a good long sit down which is what I needed to beat bosses in that game. This seems like it's going to be right up my alley.
Writing on Games same here, looks awesome and sounds like just what I've been looking for. Something I can play that's fun action rpg, good upgrade and loot system and it doesn't have to take 70 hours to beat!! Already pre purchased!!
I think this game would be a lot more appealing to me if I hadn't spent the last several days playing Prey. I can only take so much dystopian sci-fi before getting fatigued. Wait for sale seems like perfectly reasonable advice.
JarvisTheBest you know what's funny thinking about all the recent games at a time out there pretty much all dystopian sci-fi games lol Horizon Neir Gravity rush Mass effect Prey
Yeah I was thinking getting either Prey or The Surge, but since I'm currently in the soulslike game mindset, I went for The Surge. Prey does look pretty damn good though, but it just didn't grab my attention enough I guess (and I'm a huge System Shock & Bioshock fan).
the problem and thing I hate is that dark souls didn't get so popular just on difficulty it played a big part but the lore and amazing way of story telling is what brought a community together nothing will ever be dark souls just off difficulty
John Herrera they also had good boss design. Like what turns me off of this game is when he said less bosses. Like what is a Souls game without bosses to git gud with?
sitting with finger on purchase button, refreshing RUclips to see if you've shared your mighty knowledge with us on The Surge yet...and here it is!! Thank you for the work you put in for your viewers, myself and many others are more thankful than you know!
Downloading it now and just finished review 😊 if you ever feel interested in playing the rest of the soul series, hit me up. I've helped a few of my friends platinum them and in always looking for an excuse to revisit them
I just recently played through The Surge after getting it for free in April and I have to say the game is solid. Definitely needs a bit of polish in some areas but overall definitely worth a good chunk of my time. I got the platinum trophy too.
+Frosty ! I know. Ever since I found this channel and Downward Thrust, I can barely get through a Gameranx "review" videos as it's just littered with bias to make games look better.
Am I the only one that can't help but wonder how the main character doesn't eventually die from all the infections he must have after the exo-suit "surgery"? It just seems that having things screwed into your bones through your clothes would cause basically a whole skeleton infection from all the fibers being pulled into the wounds... Just thought that was funny, thanks for another quality review Karak.
You're definitely my go to reviewer now man, you explain to the last piece of the game and that's what a review should be. It really makes the decision to buy or not easier when you can tell the reviewer knows the shit he's talking about.
as always said and told me everything I needed to know! only found your page a month or so ago but I don't preorder anymore I wait for your vids and havnt regretted it. the games you recommend I have bought and loved and the ones I've skipped havnt had a 2nd thought about. Cheers bud keep up the brilliant work
Hi ACG. I was just rewatching your old review of dishonoured 2. I commented on it some stupid thing and you actually replied to me in a cool manner telling me why I was wrong. Anyway I just wanted to say that you were right and I appreciate what you are doing!
I really enjoyed your review and as fan of the souls games I still preordered this, due to the improvements from Lords of the fallen, plus from watching different opinions on the game, it still looks really fun.
DieterGebieter: Reviews, War Thunder und mehr Ah, classic YT comment section. On a more serious note, why do you think we have focus groups, preordering, preorder bonuses or anything to do with buying a game early? It's because publishers still think it's the best way to screw us over. I don't care if Jesus himself spoke to you in your dream about buying this game. If you buy before launch (why can't you buy it the day it comes out? Or wait for actual reviews in case something gets changed via a dreaded day one patch?) you're fueling these practices. I could end with name-calling but that's such a cliché at this point.
Payadopa I think you're taking this way too seriously, I always preorder my games cause I know what to expect, but it is what it is, plus it's just a video game so don't stress too hard about it. Not trying to hate, just giving my take on your opinion :)
im a huge souls fan. i just ran through the first part of this, and yes im let down by the enemies, but other than that i completely approve. didnt want to stop playing.
was curious to see this review after your interview with the (lead designer?) As always your absolutely honest and transparent review system never let me down Youda youda best Karak
I bought this game after watching a lot of pro and way more con video's. I have to say I really enjoyed the game. It's a change from the usual fighting styles and the environment is very nice. I don't get all the ranting that some reviewers are all about. It is a hard game and you have to grind a lot but I really didn't mind. It honed my skills and made me better at defeating. Boss fights feel epic in my opinion and are very dynamic, as is the game itself as well. Overall I would give it a 8/10. Sometimew the fighting will frustrate you and I never really used the duck and jump option you have while fighting an enemy. That's about it for me. Overall, very good game!
Totally agree with the final suggestion. I bought LOTF day one and was pretty underwhelmed, and while this looks much better, I still don't feel it's $60 better. The one thing this game makes me curious about though is if FromSoft might at one point try a sci-fi version of their own formula. Its not like they've never dabbled in such a setting (Armored Core)
I'm a casual gamer so got most my reviews from ign or gamespot but ever since I found you you're all I need. Thanks for your hard work and in depth reviews.
I didn't hear about this game until I saw TB talk about it and after watching your video I'm even more interested. Given that this is the second Soulslike attempt from the same studio behind Lords of the Fallen it seems like they're getting closer to what made FromSoft's masterworks tick even if they haven't truly nailed it yet. The trend of games like The Surge and Salt and Sanctuary trying to iterate on the Souls series is definitely one that I'm happy with. From showed what could be done through such iteration with Bloodborne, and I'm really excited to see how different settings and tones can be used to influence the design of a game like this. Someone on Reddit posted these images of what a soulslike might look like if set in contemporary Japan and it really shows where just a little creativity can lead a game like this.
I'm glad that they switched the Souls formula up a little bit. The game doesn't look all THAT great, but I'm happy that they tried a futuristic approach to it. I will buy it on a steam winter sale or something like that
Man your reviews are the absolute best in the business! Informative on a deeper level than any other I can think of. Highly amusing as well. Keep it up dude. The only place I come to make an informed decision.
I'm glad this game turned out fairly decent, but the environments look so dull and unappealing. It really could have benefited from more outdoor settings. Thanks for the review, I'll maybe check it out when it's on the cheap.
Despite the fact, that you speak slower than usual I have to say your reviews are great. I was really interested in this game, and after few other reviews I actually learned A LOT more from yours. Thanks!
if anyone loves "souls like games" but can't stand to walk down another dungeon or castle hallway. you are not alone. I'll pay full price just to play this now. awesome review as always.
Seemed interesting until the mention of bosses. People tend to lose this between action style, pvp, and visuals, but Dark Souls had amazing bosses with unique moves that you needed to learn and git gud. There is a ton of satisfaction after killing a boss that took you 5, 10, or even 15+ tries. It is a challenge for that reason. Not having bosses is like missing out on a big chunk to me and without those unique bosses I feel like it's just underwhelming. So no unless it gets a dramatic discount later count me out.
I think i figured out why this game just didnt feel how i wanted it to. it was range. by this i mean that whatever weapon i chose even if the attacks looked different it was only a matter of mash an attack style until you see an enemy attack coming and dodge. and thats it. i never felt that i chose a weapon because the moveset it just all felt the same. thinking about dark souls games or nioh using a spear was vastly different from say a longsord or dual swords and ended up with a very unique playingstyle throughout the whole game, having me replay the game over and over again just with a different weapon set and feeling it be unique but not in this game. no matter what weapon i used it all felt the same. there are other reasons that i just couldnt bring myself to finish the game and just gave up out of boredom but i never see this one mentioned in any other reviews
I dont agree there are many times in darksouls where i would do say an r1 with a certain weapon but not continue with the combo because the next attack would be a sideways swing and i had a wall becide me or the attack caused me to move in an undesirable way. I think a better way of puter it is that the weapons has a very pricise hitbox. they were a seperate object that could hit into things and bounce off and the movesets also brought with them movements that had to be taken into account. from what i experienced of the surge you almost get stuck to your enemy and the only thing to consider is dodging its attack and nothing else.
Karak...i sincerely want to thank you for your reviews. As someone who values their time and money. Your reviews help me decide when to spend those precious resources. Your taste reflect my own so i trust your reviews greatly. I first noticed your exquisite taste with that sweet sho'nuff poster lol. Anyway thanks again and keep up the great work.
Well made video as always Karak One of the things I check before buying a game is your review, your reviews are as thorough, summarized and most importantly authentic as it gets. Keep at it man don't succumb to darkness and turn into a commercial reviewer ;p
God I farmed myself to Core 55 in the 1st area. And had level 2 weapons just fro. Fighting that 1 Rhino Guy on the bridge who may or may not drop Scrap2.
I've been very anxious to play The Surge the moment I heard about it. The game is similar to Dark Souls which is fine with me. Even though the game looks good and it has some pretty good level design, it does suffer from some bland looking areas, repetitive locations and some low texture work as well. The combat more than makes up for it. Its brutal, hefty and weighty. Of course, dismembering enemies in slow motion never gets old which makes combat immensely satisfying. Audio design is done pretty well with some decent voice work, the various sounds that the machines make and the crunchiness of the combat. The game is very challenging. The upgrade system works very well. The campaign lasts around 20 hours, not including side missions, etc. Its a shame that the game suffers from too much repetitiveness in regards to the enemies that you fight as well as the locations that you visit. It doesn't completely hinder The Surge's fun factor. but it does bring it down a bit for sure. Thanks Karak for the awesome review!
Thank you for not making this review a constant comparison to the souls series like everyone else. This is the only review I've seen so far that judges the game on its own merits without directly comparing them to DS
The demo popped up on my dashboard on Ps4 and I downloaded it...Gave it a try and I love it. Watched the review to see how someone else felt about this game and of course your reviews are always top notch. I felt the same way about waiting for a sale on this game. At 41.99 (if you have plus) It just doesn't seem the price. Hopefully it drops to 30 or lower because that's where I'd put my money in at. The story just doesn't seem to really be there in the demo, so I don't really feel it's gonna be there in the full game. I will say that out the gate with the wheelchair, I felt that was something iconic because what game do you start out in one? Not any I've played. Gave a real uniqueness to this.. I hope I'm wrong on this story being lacking when I get the full version sometime down the road. Anyhow, great review as always.
Hands down best reviewer on the planet. Lays it out in an informative, highly entertaining and witty manner. Easy to pick out what we, as individuals, would each look for in a game and then allow us to place an emphasis on what caters to us. The end rating, to me at least, isn't nearly as important compared to how well the informative nature of the review is presented.
So glad I picked this up last night at 9. Thank you for the review man. I'm happy to see Deck 13 didn't make a Lords of the Fallen 2 and did this instead.
March 2018 UPDATE Finally got around to purchasing it. Tips: Learn counters Figure out what CHIPS would be best for your game style Pick 1-2 main weapons and stick with them. (One elemental great sword type, one short sword type for speed) Practice and don’t rush. Do you like the obvious games this is compared to? If yes then 100000% buy it. Runs brilliant and since Souls 3 and Bloodborne I been desperate for something else. This has just joined my fave games of all time list. Trust me , the sequel is coming so get involved on this game NOW. Worth every penny. Don’t rush and be aware that’s it’s a good few hours to your brain clicks and you FEEL THE GAME. Like Souls and borne it’s an art form of timing etc. We all know that addiction. This is brilliant
Love the review, my man, as always! Funny, informative, and enjoyable -and despite the shortcomings I'm still super curious about the game and want to check it out :) Also, completely off topic here.. but... Dean Hobbs sounds like he's voiced by Connor Trinneer, it's a dead ringer, yet IMDb doesn't say anything, nor does Google. Curious.
I've seen it for £30, which doesn't seem too bad for the length of story. Longer than dawn of war 3 at least. Cheers for the swift review, I nearly paid full price for this!
Does the story mimic Dark Souls' method of revealing the plot through dropped items and documents and the clever hints throughout the world environment itself?
Looks like they've nailed the combat this time, nice animations too.I hope they've put in enough enemy variants and not just colored differently.Looks boss and can't wait to play it. Also that other game lords of the fallen was good for newbies like me,but i'm level 25ish on dark souls 3 and it's taking over my life.I'll fit this in though for sure. Good review again karack.:)
I don't normally leave comments, but I have to say I really enjoyed this review. Informative and to the point. I think I have a go-to game reviewer now. Keep up the outstanding work!
Myself and a friend poured about 8 hours into Surge yesterday and are having a blast! I agree though with the criticisms in this video. I have felt there are some gaps in the enemy types - compared with Dark Souls, it seems almost all enemies are kind of player-equivalent types that it is best to single off and tackle one at a time. This game could have benefited from more swarm-type enemies and the kind of strategically placed tanks / mini bosses which inspire terror in the Souls games until you learn how to deal with them. it's the strategic challenges that correographing different encounters with a mix of these enemy types which made Souls' combat so deep and meaningful. I also think a couple of very simple changes would improve the experience - a basic character creation tool would have been welcome, as would the ability to unlock new colours and textures to paint your armour with, just to make him your own, and some kind of multiplayer arena. Having said that I'm very happy they chose to invest their work where they did - into the combat, gameplay mechanisms and general balance - and I think this bodes well for future games in the series, where the other bells and whistles can straightforwardly be included and expanded upon. I think this game has so much room to grow into that I personally do not for a second regret paying full sticker price at launch, though I think this review is very fair, as always from this excellent channel.
I had a feeling this was a "wait for a sale" type of game since I first saw it, but was waiting for your expert view to see if I was right. Thanks for the in-depth review dude!
My summary
Whoops cut out the word totally when talking about it mitigating issues"
I liked it for the most part but as the game got into its second half the smaller footprint of overall locations and the way the game plays worked against it. It just needed a couple more locations I think.
So, would you say that the locations are generic and repetitive in general terms? and the same goes for the variety of the enemies? something like "i've been here and i've fought those folks a lot of times?" Because those are my principal fears with this game, i mean, i think that i would like the context, the combat, and the souls formula, but for me, a repetitive or generic enviornment and the lack of variety on the enemies, could be a gamebreaker on that type of games...
ACG always an awesome and well constructed review!!! Thank you, mate, greetings from Chile :) love your channel and your reviews
We thinking it lacked visual variety? Or overall variety?
PRetty much what I said in the review
I am just glad they improved from Lords of The Fallen. I say the more chances I get to Git Gud the better.
I'm actually really excited to get my copy through tomorrow now. The idea of a Souls-like that doesn't suck up a million hours of my life is weirdly appealing to me at this stage.
I totally get that
I own Nioh and I really like what it's going for! It just gives me legitimate anxiety attacks when I play it haha
I"m here with you, I liked the Dark Souls franchise, but being a family man now I just couldn't sink the amount of time I wanted into it. I mean, I can play it for tens of hours, but I can't get a good long sit down which is what I needed to beat bosses in that game. This seems like it's going to be right up my alley.

so you want less game for your money? doesnt really make sense to me
I can't help but think Edge of Tomorrow.
I think this game would be a lot more appealing to me if I hadn't spent the last several days playing Prey. I can only take so much dystopian sci-fi before getting fatigued. Wait for sale seems like perfectly reasonable advice.
true that

This is a fantastic game. My first Souls-esque game.

Last time I was this early you had 30k subs. Great vids Karak!

thats why I make jokes about it here
I might've missed it in the review but its a funny thought that the main character fights his way out of hell only to die by bone infections lol.
I was thinking the something similar "They could've have at least put him to sleep, are those even sterile?"
Lel thats nothing compared to the heart transplantation in thw middle of the desert in open air in Terminator Salvation
Actually my first thought was how is he gonna poop?

thanks
I like the idea behind Dark souls but i hate the medieval like setting. Maybe The Surge is a game for me. And it is a german game!
Levytskyy I would say dark souls is the same thing like this. only nioh game variety to it's weapon.
Anyway thanks again and keep up the great work.
thanks
Congrats on 300k subs and thanks for the great reviews always Carrick/Carrot ! :P
The fact that you can actually pause it is a massive plus to me
Always very honest and informative, I never buy a game anymore without watching the review from this channel. Keep up the great work!
Fast, informative reviews always on time, this is now my go to channel for game reviews. Made me buy Prey and I loved the shit out of it. Thanks!
Your reviews are fucking fantastic. A breath of fresh air compared to the 3 minute norm we get these days.
Well made video as always Karak
One of the things I check before buying a game is your review, your reviews are as thorough, summarized and most importantly authentic as it gets.
Keep at it man don't succumb to darkness and turn into a commercial reviewer ;p
God I farmed myself to Core 55 in the 1st area. And had level 2 weapons just fro. Fighting that 1 Rhino Guy on the bridge who may or may not drop Scrap2.
What really??? How much time did it took any tips for farming scraps?
Probably the best souls-like game that is the most different souls-like game
PS Plus Crowd?
I like your whole approach to reviews and your delivery, and what got my sub was the whole "if you like the video, meh, subscribe"
Thanks for being honest. I look forward to your content for any upcoming games I'm thinking of buying.
you bet
Sorry if already asked but how are the multiplayer options? Only sp? Password system? Thanks in advance, love your vids!!
Like the player sprinting across the surface off a slowly rotating rotisserie chicken ... 2:48... WTF DUDE how did you write this hahaha
crank and monster energy drinks
Honestly tho your creative writing element is of the charts man.. PROPS TO YOU MAN i wish i could write like that.
ACG, keep it up man! you're killing it bro! Your quality, and consistency levels are mind-boggling.
thanks so much Kap
That Dean Hobbs voice actor sounds familiar and I just cannot remember where I heard him before.
ACG on top of the early reviews as always. Very good channel.
Just got my digital copy for $35. As always you're spot-on with the reviews
March 2018 UPDATE
Finally got around to purchasing it.
Tips:
Learn counters
Figure out what CHIPS would be best for your game style
Pick 1-2 main weapons and stick with them. (One elemental great sword type, one short sword type for speed)
Practice and don’t rush.
I already love that twangy hick song of the tech room (or whatever its called).
Hi Karak! does your dodge-dash have s in the surge?
Love the review, my man, as always! Funny, informative, and enjoyable -and despite the shortcomings I'm still super curious about the game and want to check it out :) Also, completely off topic here.. but...
Dean Hobbs sounds like he's voiced by Connor Trinneer, it's a dead ringer, yet IMDb doesn't say anything, nor does Google. Curious.
thanks!
The biggest thing for me is the lighting/graphics which doesn't do it justice on my mobile device watching these but on my monitor look rock solid
I've seen it for £30, which doesn't seem too bad for the length of story. Longer than dawn of war 3 at least. Cheers for the swift review, I nearly paid full price for this!
You're my go to reviewer! Good stuff as always :)
Looks like a 'get when it's on sale' kind of game.
GhostedBear It's almost like he said the exact same thing in the video.
I comment before I watch videos
GhostedBear Genius.
I probably won't get it until sale. A dark souls style game without bosses just sounds bad.
+dogsrulenw08 there are bosses
Does the story mimic Dark Souls' method of revealing the plot through dropped items and documents and the clever hints throughout the world environment itself?
Been looking forward to this since your interview with Adam. Gonna put it off until I finish Prey, I can't get enough. Thanks for the video!
interesting bit of insider information: deck 13 had an employee that is at naughty dog now, working on uncharted ;)
cool
Another great review delivered with no nonsense and hilarious linguistic gymnastics in equal measure
Good review again karack.:)
thanks
"bag of holding people parts +4" simply hilarious
I was waiting for this review, you know I now buy games on your reviews, you have not done me wrong yet.
Choice between this and Prey and Prey won. Not disappointed. Definitely will be getting this in a dead games month maybe this summer though.
I like that he complimented Nioh
I don't normally leave comments, but I have to say I really enjoyed this review. Informative and to the point. I think I have a go-to game reviewer now. Keep up the outstanding work!
Really nice work again, just waited for your review :)
Another excellent review Karak. This is why I keep coming back to watch your review videos.
I was on the fence about this one for my May purchase , Thanks for making it easy for me to just wait it out for a price break.
Thinking about getting this, thought to myself "wonder if ACG has a review." GOTDAMN right he does!! Thanks!!
I had a feeling this was a "wait for a sale" type of game since I first saw it, but was waiting for your expert view to see if I was right.
Thanks for the in-depth review dude!
Hey ACG, if it was out of this or Nioh which way should one go?
