He recites according to the Maqamaat:
There is a system of different rhythms/tunes/styles/melodies that the Qurraa use called the Maqamaat. Each style of course sounds different and can carry a different emotion.
Maqam Sabaa- sadness
Maqam Nahawand- intensity
Maqam Ajam- joy
Maqam Bayati- either sadness or happiness
Maqam Sika- happiness and elegance
Maqam Rast- melody and beauty
Maqam Hijaz- fear
Maqam Kurd- calmness and serenity
These are the rhythms that many famous Qurraa recited in, such as Shaykh Abdul Basit Abdussamad. These 8 rhythms are the main 8, and each has many different branches or variations. Qurraa sometimes change the Maqam they recite it. I recommend listening to Yasser Al Dosry, Saad Al Ghamidi and Mishary Rashid Al Afasy, for examples of Maqamaat, as they recite in all the Maqamaat. The maqamaat are also used when giving the adhaan and in nasheeds.
