My unc set has a ding on one of the quarters. I was tempted to return it, but ultimately decided to just stop buying them... I don't collect modern dollars, or modern dimes. I also don't generally collect nickels(they're just too common). So I feel like I'm spending too much anyway, as I could buy them in the secondary market cheaper. I do however have a 50-D jefferson nickel, that I feel was stupidly undervalued. THAT'S a key date! lol I'm more a sucker for halves and/or mercury dimes 🤤
@@zzyzxRDFwy15 From what I researched, there was a nationwide penny shortage in the early 80s. The copper cents were worth more than face value and people started hoarding them for their raw copper, just like they did with the silver coins back in the 60s. That prompted the US government to change the metal composition of the penny permanently. As for why they keep producing pennies, most Americans wanted the penny to be kept because they assume that the prices would be low, which is nonsense. I don't think the penny has as much public support now as it did in the past, especially when there's the next penny shortage caused by the rising zinc prices, which is why they're reducing the penny production now so the Fed can temporarily stop producing pennies. They want the public to get used to it, unless there's a penny shortage. I think the penny would be discontinued by the next decade though or the second half of this decade.
Let us not forget that star (*) notes are going to be disappearing next year.
I fail to understand why the mint needs to produce so many Lincoln cents. 🤔 It makes no "SENSE"!

That 50 D has a mintage less than 10 mil!!! Outstanding!
I predict US Mint will produce at least 2 billion pennies, and next year they'll produce less than a billion.
I don't understand why the US Mint should start producing pennies and turn away from the copper covered zinc cent.
