Days are long but when I was in (1972) you worked port and starboard so every other day you were off. When the rest of the crew was turning to, I was going on liberty. Also I never waited in a pay line or shot lines. No doubt pay lines have gone away, but they used to pay you in cash. Everyone was your friend as a cook. I liked the rate and then spent a career as a chef in restaurants.
I was a cook and definitely I networked with a lot of shipmates and till this day I still get praised for many meals I cooked..it was in my blood to be a cook definitely not for everyone and it's easier now to advance then back in the early 2000s lawd how I miss being stationed in Pearl Harbor
I leave April 6th for basic and I’m going to be a CS I’m just trying to go in with a positive mindset but my contract is for 4 years 😭 which is like Geesh I have to cook for 4 whole years I’m going to die lol but hopefully it’s not as bad as people say...best of luck to anyone else who’s going in as a CS 🙌🏽
All the CS’s out there you all get the most respect cuz they cook for the sailors to keep them happy if the food is tasty you will make the sailors happy you all bring the morale up every day I see the same CS and I made friends with them and they bring my motivation up when I get breakfast and the food is tasty I will always respect them
0:25 GADAMN IT! You're right man that is EXACTLY what they told me before I signed my contract man🤦♂️ I thought it was fair due to my low ASVAB score. Piece of advice to anyone reading this rn, DO NOT SIGN ANY CONTACT WITH THEM IF YOU HAVEN’T DONE ANY RESEARCH ON ALL THE JOB THEY HAVE, that was my #1 mistake before joining guys. Thank you for this video bro now I have more insight into what I'm getting myself into now.
Right on. I joined the 1969. I got my orders in boot camp for A school Newport. Then off to Newfoundland for almost 18 months. Then I was a plank owner on the DE-1082. Worked long hours every other day. It was a nightmare. Why? I was a yank on a southern devission. Long hours
Corpsman here. Our quotas are 1% . I’m thinking about crossrating cuz I’ve been E3 for 5 years and I was really forced into the corpsman job not realizing I had other options. Thanks for the info, really happy to hear this first hand.
The Official Dave Harris Nope, that’s reserved for the favorites. I’m looking into CS since the advancement quotas are better and I actually like cooking. Was just looking for info first hand from CS’s to know the pros and cons.
euphoryuh I feel you. Check out my other videos about the CS rate. We work long hours and you are on your feet all day cooking or cleaning, it’s hard to to get a full lunch break because your so busy cooking. The plus side you can cook yourself what you want sometimes, you don’t have to wait in line to eat, you get days off during the middle of the week, you don’t stand duty, it’s easy to make rank, you can get stationed more places than any other rate.
The Official Dave Harris hmm yea tbh, a lot of other Corpsmen would think I’m crazy for wanting to leave the corpsmen lifestyle. It would really be a downgrade going to CS. We live pretty comfortably but I feel like when we do work hard it doesn’t pay off due to our low advancement rate. Even getting an EP isn’t a guarantee. I just wanna work a job where my hard work actually gets me somewhere and I’m not breaking my back for nothing. Every CS I seen looks dead inside but that 5 to 2 thing is pretty nice, especially for the CS’s on shore duty in Japan where I just came from.
euphoryuh I feel you about busting you ass and nothing to show for it. As a cook out to sea it’s tough most of us do feel dead inside when all you do is work but your hard work does pay off I made E5 in 3 years and I went to my first ship as a E1.
Any tips for being a CSS? I think I got screwed over. I never intended to be a chef on a submarine but I only picked CSS because its the farthest date to give my recruiter's time to switch my rate. I just pray every day I get my rate changed. Thank you for your service bud. I hope to meet you in person someday.
i feel it i was tricked by them like you mentioned, they said exact same that there is only one job available for me eventually i ended up sign the contract as cs
Oh as far as FSA, I loved it. I busted my ass for my MS's. I worked as hard as I could and I was the king of the reefer decks. I had that area organized and prestaged for a couple days at a time for the breakouts. I nearly went MS just because the quality of shipmates I got to work with while cranking. I knew I wouldnt have been so lucky with my next command and at the time advancement for MS's wasnt so good so I went BU instead.
Appreciate the info, means alot. I'm going in as a CS and now I know what to expect, long ass hours lol, but I'm gonna make the best out of it. You should make one about couples too mane on how's its like.
christian gauna thank you for watching and it’s not all bed it’s different on every ship and it’s even better on shore duty. Only deployments you work you butt off. You mean do a video on relationships in the military?
I swore in as a CS since its literally one of the only jobs I was qualified for. I felt pretty discouraged about it..But after watching your video, I have hope that I can pull through this job. I may even like it. Ah, who knows. Overall, I thank you for this great information! Please continue to post more CS content! I really need it! ..Also, is it possible to change rates while working as a CS and if so, how? And I know CS dont have alot of freedom / day offs but are they still able to atleast have some vacational leave? Thank you again!
Camron Moruno yes of course every will have the same amount of vacation time. Trust me you will have time to yourself as a CS it’s really not too bad when you look back at it especially when you go on shore duty. You can crossrate in two years at least that’s what they tell you. As long is your rate is not undermanned.
As someone who enjoys cooking, i would never feed myself first or make myself anything that everyone else isn't having. The way i see it, the cook should always take care of others needs before themselves, I am always the last to eat as a cook. And never serve anyone anything you wouldn't eat yourself, barring allergies. If everyone else has to eat catfish that you cooked, you should also eat some catfish.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Thanks for making the video. Hoping to join the navy early next year. My goal is to become a cook so it is fairly informative.
I hear on subs (boomers) its 12 on, 12 off. I just went reserve engine man to active css a month ago. Working with a lot of shore duty guys while waiting for sub school orders now which is kind of a blessing, really. I'm gonna request boomers for my first sea duty just cause they have more of a fixed schedule.
One of the main things I've learned so far on the ship in the Navy, is don't piss off the CS's. I've heard stories about what can happen to a shipmate that comes at yall side ways.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 they me got doing FSA right now. It's not bad. Mainly washing dishes all day. Didnt realize the amount of food that's thrown away every day.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 when its time for me to streak a rate, I've been thinking about the CS rate. It's a lot of things you can do outside of the Navy being a CS. The hours are long, but you dont have to beat your body up like you do working with the BMs in deck. And it seem like yall rank up pretty fast too.
TheBlackKnight yes we do rank fast and your right being a cook isn’t strenuous work which is good for your body. Go ahead man and pick CS you seem like you have a plan.
Man I feel this! They told me this is the only job I could do. I’m 5 points away from being able to do MA and a waiver is an option but they said “it isn’t worth it. It won’t get approved.” I also qualified for BM. But they’re bent on me doing CS and idk I’m not very passionate about cooking what’s so ever. They even went as far as saying “if you don’t pick this job your career in the military comes to an end here.” I don’t know what to do 😩 advice?
Rori Leal Good luck, I'm a military cook too but it's Army. I've been told by one of my e7's, who has been a cook for 14 years, that in a lot of ways, we Army cooks have it worse than cooks in other branches (cooks in the other branches have better opportunities for additional training, for one thing). But I feel you that being a cook in the military period sucks badly.
Rori Leal I would still try to get a waiver because if a cool is not what you want to do don’t sign that contract. If cooking is not your passion it’s going to be hard.
Derrica Forte yes you get off during port calls. They split the cooks and fsa's up in 2 or 3 watches depending on how many cooks in the galley and you just rotate days you will work. When its you day to work you work breakfast lunch and dinner and you can go out on liberty after work.
Derrica Forte normally between 3-5 days but its up to the higer ups. You still stand duty ever 3 days so it you really will have less time. Your ship will also set up activities and trips to go on while in port.
Derrica Forte yes you definitely well have a life. At times it will be tough but when your not workinh enjoy your time at home with family and friends.
Actually trying to be a CS. They super selective on who cooks on Submarines? Also how was your monthly salary looking as an E-3, if you remember? Finally, how did you make rank?
Ronnie Swann you have to request to go on a sub they won’t put anyone you have to be mentally prepared. As a E3 I was getting around $800 every two weeks so about $1600 a month give or take. I came in as a E1 and made E5 just under 3 years.
They tried to give me the CSS rate. Me 6'6" on a submarine. No THANKS. They told me that was the only option, and they found an LS spot for basic shipment in 9 months. But there going to find me something sooner.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 yea dude. I swore in with the CSS. Shipment Jan 30th, and 5 mins after they changed it to LS but they said Nov 1st they'll have a bunch of new jobs for me to choose from. I'm hoping I can get MC, OR GM. I cant work on the flight deck because I'm "color blind" fuck that test. I can see every color I just couldn't quite make out the numbers. Which screwed me big time. But im okay with LS, but it's obviously not the most interesting job.
Michael Jameson oh ok I think MC is a great rate I would love to do that myself but LS isn’t bad you get access to new boots and new coveralls which is good on deployment you can make a lot of connections.
Im a 4 year E-3 got ESWS and MPs on my past evals, been up for 3rd 4 times and now im really stumped on whether i wanna go to shore duty or get out. Really the only thing i want to do is barracks but i know its not guaranteed. I really dont wanna go back to the galley just cooking isnt for me when it comes to cooking on the ship my thing was always maintenance and love doing it instead of cooking. What do you think my best route is
Start running and doing sit ups and push ups now, that will help a lot. Also learn how to swim if you dont know already. Learn the general orders and chang of command. Also right down your phone numbers of important people to call because you will have to send your phone back home.
Man CS in the navy sounds like it blows, long hours and starting off at low pay. You at least get to see a lot of the world on deployment right? What do you think about being a Coast Guard Culinary Specialist? Is it any better or is it basically the same stuff?
In my honest opinion its sucks being a cook on a ship and anyone could tell you that. But dont listen to ne your experience might be different and you could love it. Yes you get to travel a lot being a cook you can get stationed anywhere but it all depends on your ship what contries you get to see.
Awesome video, I was thinking of joining the military, if you could go back what branch would you join? And in the navy what job would you really want to do instead of CS?
I would go air force hands down. They are more family friendly and their deployments are easier and that rate i would go back and choose is a IT or SH.
I’m still a CS and I’m a 6 years right now. A school in fort lee Virginia as easy it was 4 weeks long. 2 weeks of book work and 2 weeks of lab work(cooking).
Brai Grandberry congratulations 🎊🍾🎉 I was able to go back to back because another ship ask for for volunteers and I got picked, so it’s possible just ask your command.
The Official Dave Harris I stay out in San Diego and I do real estate and forex. They wanted me to re-enlist. I was JOD but I was ready for the civilian life.
Thank You So Much For This Video , I Was Sworn In 2 Weeks Ago & I Go To Boot camp On The 13Th , I Was So Discouraged When I Got CS , But I Have To Make The Best Of It . How Is A School , What Do They Teach You . And Does Cs Have Specific Uniforms .
Israel Diaz i been on 3 deployments my first 4 years 9 months, 7 months, and 3 months. As cooks we work 13 hour days everyday monday thur monday. as cooks we work clean work clean work clean its the same thing over and over again. Your body will get use to the hours after a couple weeks you will find a routine.
Starting off as a cs you will typically work what we call a 5 and 2. One week you will work five days and off two days and the next week you will work two days and off five days. And the days we work its from 4:45 am until 6pm unless its your turnoverday and you will work from 4:45am until after breakfast so b/w 8 and 10am. We work every other weekends.
That averages out to be around 45 hours a week if you average 13 hour days! not bad. When on deployment, are you able to go on land with the rest of the sailors?
@@nicholascherry5962 yeah its not bad. Just long days. And yes on deployment you have of days with the rest of the ship. Good thing with CS is that we dont stand duty so even after work we can still go out in town on deployment.
This is great info I will not take this job , it’s Too much 14 hours of work , but how much would u say the facts that you have ranked up quickly would factor into being a cook, being a good idea .
I would get out and move back with your parents and get a business going. Don't think you deserve a home with the VA Home loan right off of the bat. I would avoid debt getting out cause that forces you to get a traditional job then you can't focus on business as much.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Yeah man I was in for 7 years. My opinion is don't waste time on GI Bill, debt, or a job. Just 100% business if you can. The BAH from the GI Bill is nothing compared to a successful business. BAH is a waste of time to get a degree to become a slave to a job when you get out. If I could go back, I would be a loser living with my mom or someone I knew just building and growing with no distractions. A job, owning a house and the Gi Bill BAH ain't shit. What's going to happen is other sailors are going to get out, get families/debt and get stuck and becomes slaves real quick going to school for some 100k job when most of it is taxed. They aren't even thinking straight. Get a snow cone stand going or something more detailed. Something without a business loan at first.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 I was an IT. Well if you work with food, maybe a meal-prep business with a good woocommerce wordpress ordering system. You can start that from your home with door dash/uber eats then scale that to a commercial shop. Eventually, duplicate/franchise then buy some commercial land so you don't have to pay rent anymore. All kinds of ways you can scale and grow. Rent out one of the slots in the commercial building that you buy to pay the loan payment. I would also stick $1000 bucks into XRP and forget it cause it's at a decent price right now.
@@victormendoza3295 you got my mind going now i will definitely look inti that. Ive always wanted to run my own food truck business so i still have that in the back of my mind. Im definitely going to do some research.
Cori Nicole Mitchell yes, so towards the end of A school they will give you a wish list and you just pick where you want to go. It was 3 choices W for west coast, E for east coast, and O for overseas. Thats what you do in A school but they will still put you wherever the navy needs you.
Cori Nicole Mitchell no its very easy. They are not there to fell you the instructors want you to pass. It was 4 weeks long 2 weeks of book work and 2 weeks in the kitchen lab cooking, thats the fun part.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Thanks, also can you tell me your rank, and can you tell me how long it usually takes to rank up from an E-2 to a E-5 as a CS
Victor Dwyer sorry for the late response but I’m a E5 and from E1-E3 is automatic you just have to wait 6 months 6 months and 9 months. After you make E3 it’s about 6 months to take the E4 exam depending on when you made E3. Then to make E5 you have to wait a year, well at least for me it did it just depends if you have a EP eval or not.
Bud, why they drove you into the CS rate is unknown to me, and I don't want to know the details. Why you accepted and went in, that is another story, because you sound down and unhappy with your MOS. I would like to say, that as a 6 year combat Airborne Infantry Veteran, I wish I had gone into being a military cook! If your girl dogs you for coming home smelling like food from a decent career and good future, then you may want to revisit your connection with her. Just me, that's all.
When you shave if you get bad razer bumps on your face and chin then you will be allowed to get a waiver where you dont have to shave for a certain amount of time. In the navy we call it a "No Shave Chit".
Najee Bullock if you are a cook in the galley you do not stand watch. Once you get jobs out the galley like record keeper and JOD you will start to stand watch. As a CS cooking in the galley is our watch.

I leave April 6th for basic and I’m going to be a CS I’m just trying to go in with a positive mindset but my contract is for 4 years 😭 which is like Geesh I have to cook for 4 whole years I’m going to die lol but hopefully it’s not as bad as people say...best of luck to anyone else who’s going in as a CS 🙌🏽
dimelessme yes it’s really what you make of it. Go in with a open mind and you will do just fine.
Corpsman here. Our quotas are 1% . I’m thinking about crossrating cuz I’ve been E3 for 5 years and I was really forced into the corpsman job not realizing I had other options.
Thanks for the info, really happy to hear this first hand.
euphoryuh man that sucks, your command won’t cap/map you?? I really hope this video helped you. What do you want to be?
I really appreciate this video in 2020. And is great that you answer people questions. Take care 👍🏻

Any tips for being a CSS? I think I got screwed over. I never intended to be a chef on a submarine but I only picked CSS because its the farthest date to give my recruiter's time to switch my rate.

Kali I really appreciate your comment and thank you for watching my video.

man I just got back from meps and they told me I have to take this because I failed my depth test
You should take the test again to get a higher score.
I would say no you dont want to be a CS and take the test again. If thats not the rate you want.
They had my recruiter come to meps and talk to me basically saying i'd be stupid not to accept it etc, so I just swore in with it. Its whatever
I hear that too but im not 100% sure.
One of the main things I've learned so far on the ship in the Navy, is don't piss off the CS's. I've heard stories about what can happen to a shipmate that comes at yall side ways.
TheBlackKnight that’s true I’ve seen some fucked up shit cooks did to people who came at them side ways. Plus everyone needs to eat.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 they me got doing FSA right now. It's not bad. Mainly washing dishes all day. Didnt realize the amount of food that's thrown away every day.
TheBlackKnight yes the navy throws away tons of food every meal. And they want to be stingy with the food.
They even went as far as saying “if you don’t pick this job your career in the military comes to an end here.”
I don’t know what to do 😩 advice?
Rori Leal
Good luck, I'm a military cook too but it's Army. I've been told by one of my e7's, who has been a cook for 14 years, that in a lot of ways, we Army cooks have it worse than cooks in other branches (cooks in the other branches have better opportunities for additional training, for one thing). But I feel you that being a cook in the military period sucks badly.
mac burger yes you right cooks in the navy you have a lot of different avenues to take like work in the White House.
Rori Leal I would still try to get a waiver because if a cool is not what you want to do don’t sign that contract. If cooking is not your passion it’s going to be hard.
Rori Leal don’t listen to them they need you more than you need them pick a rate you want.
Thank you! I’m gonna aim for that waiver. I figured maybe BM too. Your videos are great! Keep them coming!
So CS can get off during port calls? We don’t to stay in the galley
Derrica Forte yes you get off during port calls. They split the cooks and fsa's up in 2 or 3 watches depending on how many cooks in the galley and you just rotate days you will work. When its you day to work you work breakfast lunch and dinner and you can go out on liberty after work.
Taste Buddz how long are the port calls usually?
Derrica Forte normally between 3-5 days but its up to the higer ups. You still stand duty ever 3 days so it you really will have less time. Your ship will also set up activities and trips to go on while in port.
Taste Buddz I just wanted to make sure I can still have a life
Derrica Forte yes you definitely well have a life. At times it will be tough but when your not workinh enjoy your time at home with family and friends.
I did 4 as a CS. Ended up with 100% VA Disability over.it.
I’m trying to become a CS in the coast guard but I’ll look into the navy, just trying to see the pros and cons
The coast guard might be a little easier because your cooking for less people. But still do your research.
The Official Dave Harris appreciate it bro 💯

They tried to give me the CSS rate. Me 6'6" on a submarine. No THANKS. They told me that was the only option, and they found an LS spot for basic shipment in 9 months. But there going to find me something sooner.
Oh hell naw they tried to get you. You too tall for a sub..lol. If you stand your ground the recruiter will definitely find you something sooner.
Cross rate
I leave for boot camp on October 29th and I’m going in as a CS. If you could give me the most important tip what would it be??
Start running and doing sit ups and push ups now, that will help a lot. Also learn how to swim if you dont know already. Learn the general orders and chang of command. Also right down your phone numbers of important people to call because you will have to send your phone back home.
i wanna join the navy but i cant float and swim at all.. and i get tired easily lmao. will i still make it or i need to train while goin to boot camp?
Ayeee my rate is a CS and I leave oct 31
I was a cook the one thing i can say Making Omelletes is a pain in the Ass!!!!
The coast guard is similar only difference is the amount of people you feed is a lot less. But you do the same stuff.
Awesome video, I was thinking of joining the military, if you could go back what branch would you join? And in the navy what job would you really want to do instead of CS?
I would go air force hands down. They are more family friendly and their deployments are easier and that rate i would go back and choose is a IT or SH.
Hardest working sailors in the United States Navy!!
You bet!
How many years did you serve as a CS? And how was your A school was it in Virginia?

How’s your job man do you like it
Thanks for the video specialist. I'm debating culinary specialist, what's your typical work schedule?

I would get out and move back with your parents and get a business going. Don't think you deserve a home with the VA Home loan right off of the bat. I would avoid debt getting out cause that forces you to get a traditional job then you can't focus on business as much.
Thanks for the advice. I will keep that in mind because this is just temporary for me.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Yeah man I was in for 7 years. My opinion is don't waste time on GI Bill, debt, or a job. Just 100% business if you can. But to be honest im thinking about getting out when my contract up and go reserves. But it is possible to retire as a cs its jist up to the individual.
Taste Buddz Ahh man! Well whatever decision you decide to make will have affect on you for the rest of your life. I hope it’s good man. Is it bad or something or do you think you could be out doing something better by the time you are 40 you could already be retired too.... just something to really think about man! And what the military really has to offer ..
Taste Buddz I myself am really considering the military fully... I love the kitchen myself also. And it would be an honor to be a retired chief one day.
Definitely lied to me
Lorenzo Sloan who your recruiter?
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 This was over 25 yrs ago I'm a vet now but honestly my recruiter told me not to accept what they give me but i knew my ASVAB Was pretty low& MEPS didn't say anything about any other jobs so if i didn't take that i would probably be UNDESIGNATED SOMETHING....But during service week i worked in the Galley& realized i made a BIG MISTAKE BUT IN " A" School the instructors lied about if u don't pass " A" school u gonna be UNDESIGNATED SOMETHING Watching Mess Management Specialist ( what they called it then) going on Liberty all the time& they said we would work 5 days get 2 off & then work 2 days& get 5 off which was a lie& DEPLOYMENT WE WERE WORKING OUR ASS OFF& THEN WE HAD TO PREPARE FOR SOME INSPECTION WITHOUT ANY WARNING!!!!!
