Met this man at OR Tambo airport. He's a unit. Left me speechless. He was bigger than all of the forwards except Luaki.. Only other guy who had the same effect on me was Stirling Mortlock..
I tend not to remember his tries.. What remains vivid in my mind from his skills was his ability to pinpoint a dwarf in the misty mountains somewhere which always led to a try.. That ability of his is what really pissed me off as an opposition supporter.. Most of his tries came on a plate but his offloading antics and finding ghosts to score tries was frustrating.. Nuff respect!!
SBW was a legend. Probably was not shown enough respect by many AB fans because he dared to dream beyond the AB’s in a beautiful country but where AB’s is the end all and it is a sin to dream beyond the AB’s. In time, he might be recognised as NZ’s greatest SPORTSMAN.
You have to earn respect......most ab fans know he was used and didn't deserve to be an ab!!!!!!plus the guys a narcissist always looking at himself on the big screen!!!!!
@@michaeljoseph9510 You sound like the narcissist. Tall poppy syndrome at its finest. SBW was great, he made a huge impact when we played. He's a great athlete. People that pull out the narcissist tag are usually the ones who are the narcissists themselves. 🤫
@@michaeljoseph9510 he was good enough to walk into any other national side at his peak…you’re delusional if you think he wasn’t good enough. Not only that but unfortunately for him, he was competing for a spot against the greatest AB centre pairing in Nonu and Smith who are still yet to be replaced
What a alien player...It' s funny to see that the 2 best midfielders in the history of that sport has been at the same time and under the same colours: Sonny and Nonu
Sad to read a lot of haters here. Sonny walks the talk and talk the talk. Have any of you haters achieved anything like Sonny and help out your parents. I guess not. Just hot air on here and no pork.
If its a while before you see a player who consistently does set plays as strong as him youll know sbw was in fact a decent player. But to me anyway he was a really good player to watch and the best at set plays in rugby in his generation
My uncle used to play for france his brothers play for other teams as well but i was raised an all blacks fan back when richie was still captain ughhh the good days crazy enough i think richie knew my uncle paea
This phenomenal player seems to have been underrated outside New Zealand - I can't think why, he could do everything, and read the game well. I'm an enormous fan of Ma'a Nonu, but I can't separate the two in terms of quality; Nonu perhaps slightly the more dangerous running at the opposition, Williams slightly better at offloading the ball. Two superstars who played in one of the best XVs ever.
The thing is about Nono And SBW is that Nonu started off as a crash ball centre, then later on in his career he developed his all around skills to become arguably the greatest inside centre the all blacks ever had.
They forgot to show how when he played against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, they shut him down and lost in the Crusaders jersey & I think in the Chiefs jersey.
What height you on about. He reached his potential in league and highest earner. Then he reached All Blacks and won World Cup, he is doing boxing, wwhat else is there. When you good at something get out when you are in your highest. He did and admired him since and all my other Samoan brothers who are excellent in their chosen sports. Keep on doing what you next journey is Sonny.❤
@@michaeljoseph9510 Eritrea allows child marriage and it’s a Christian country. You must getting it confused with the other major religion with all the peadophile priests
“Midfield maestro” yet half of his highlights are him scoring the rugby equivalent of a tap-in goal in football. High overrated and was a much better league than union player. Never deserved to be an All Black realistically
Fully agree. Overrated at best, offered absolutely nothing. Players were offloading way before him, the slowest back to ever play international rugby. So big yet never ever dented the line and always got ran around on defense. Belongs in same class of abs as cane, offa, karl.
SBW is not amongst the greatest AB’s but he was an AB nonetheless - Let’s not take that away from him! He is arguably NZ’s greatest ever Sportsman - He has a very strong case!! I think people never got over his young days when he made a few mistakes especially with his league contract etc. He matured into a humble, determined man who won a Rugby WC, Grand Final in NRL and also a Heavyweight Boxer too. Wow!!😮
LOL Which he craved? There's so many insecure and jealous fools like you who read hateful news articles and form sheep opinions based on lies. SBW is such a humble and hardworking athlete and has accomplished what you and your bloodline could only dream of. His success, wealth and health makes you feel so small that you try to bring him down to your pitiful pathetic level. Imagine if you won awards for being an insecure and jealous hater... Maybe you'd have as many as SBW lol
Wrong, not well infront of the kicker.. both his legs are actually slightly behind where Kahui makes contact with the ball which is onside. You can be in line with the kicker but not have your feet/legs infront of the where the kick is contacted which Sonny wasn't. He timed that to perfection.
Met him today. Prayed together. Awesome man
Unbelievable firepower back then. Carter, conrad, nonu, SBW ... no wonder no team could best them
More like nonu conrad smith and carter Sonny bill came to union later but all blacks was already too good

Stirling was pure professionalism. A wonderful Wallaby indeed!

Yeah it's jaw dropping performance no wonder they helping the wall
All going to plan I see
I hated Stirling Mortlock....but that was only because he was so frigging good. Always played good against the ABs

@@michaeljoseph9510 I bet everyone that played with him in the All Blacks would disagree.
Extremely dangerous and skilled. One wonders why he wasn’t used more often by the ABs.
Because Ma'a Nonu and Conrad Smith - two of the best ever in their positions - played at the same time and were also even better together than apart.
Because he wasn't that good.
Because nz was lucky and had some awesome players
because he also had a magnificent rugby league career
For a guy who kept switching codes, he played over 50 tests for the ABs & won a World cup.
If anything, he was picked ahead of better players.
Sbw
My fave all rounder for a million reasons
i miss watching this guy play

cant believe he played along mounga, alb & goodhue in rwc19.
he deserved better inside & outside partner for himself.
SBW'S 13 test try was definitely his best test try
Absoltely a game breaker

great offloads
Cruden and sbw should have been used more
Brilliant distributor but Damian de Allende trampled him and dragged him 10/15 metres each time.
Yip Sonny did a wonderful job of shoulder charging Watson and getting sent off and costing us the lions series.
