Janey I'm glad to see that you are doing things a bit at a time and not having a landscape team come in and complete it all in a short amount of time! Its relatable to me and many others because of cost for one, and secondly getting a feel for your space. I think doing things yourself and a little at a time gives so much more satisfaction and appreciation for it! You have accomplished so much already so just continue being patient and plugging away at your infrastructure!
Janey, I love the idea of your secret garden being a room - and the second inspiration picture has the flooring going all throughout the ‘room’ instead of a pathway. I think you should consider *not putting the metal walkway. It would read ‘room’ more if it didn’t have a path through it. I love the room idea!!!
I prefer the pathway! It makes the yard cohesive. When gardeners say "room", we don't actually mean that it should seem like you're inside. The floor usually is an outdoor "floor".
@@carolmacdonald8437 true true! Her inspiration picture was what I was highlighting and how she spoke of wanting it to be really usable space. It will be super fun to watch her take all these possibilities and make them reality!
Janey use t posts, they work wonders! So what if fence is not 100 per cent perfect, I like it. Your little shade garden with lit candles and a glass of wine in the moon light, wow! Perfect!
Ah to be young again🥰 Janie you and Jason are such a beautiful couple🥰 I love the way he shares your interest in the gardens too. I can’t wait to see your spring garden.
I love the vision for the wall of green and the arches, that will look fabulous. Maybe you could replace just the section of fence inside the "secret garden" area so you could move forward, then replace the rest of the fence later.
I would put some long pieces of rebar in concrete on each corner to secure the trellises to. They will rust and last longer than wood. They would disappear as well.
I have done this with similar metal trellises and arbors and it works great. The rebar gets cemented in and wired to the trellises. It quickly disappears as the vines grow.
Haha.... it just freaks me out seeing someone driving and all the driving gear on the passenger side of the car🤣🤣 love your channel. From Monbulk Victoria Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Living in CA with those wood fences that always fail I have some things that might help that I’ve learned over the years. First of all those are all with nails. The wood boards warp and pop those nails out. So go buy tons of long wood screws and do an overkill of wood screws attaching every board to its backing boards. Before you do that though, check all the posts which look like they are on the neighbors side and if they are just loose in the soil , dig around them , get them nice and straight and pour a quick crete concrete base around the bottom. If it’s rotted though, it ends new post. You might not be ready to do that yet and if there are only a few it’ll just have to wait. But be sure to reattach those wood planks all the way around with multiple long screws on your whole fence. It will help. Also you can replace sections of that fence without doing the whole fence. If you have a section that is about to totally fall over , just replace that. It will be a different color at first but a couple of seasons and it will weather out like the rest. Be sure they use screws on the new section.
Good morning Janey and Jason, 🐕 Oh that's going to look SO cute, can't wait, by next year its going to look SO amazing, here in the Oklahoma Panhandle, Texas County USDA zone 6B we've been having high winds of 50-60 , had a fire north of town and Texas was the worst please pray for us and Texas. Your Secret Garden going to look amazing, thank you for sharing, have a wonderful rest of the day stay warm ☕ 🙂 👋 ⛩
Oh Petaluma! We used to be next door in Sonoma. Such a beautiful drive! Something about how green it always is in winter/spring, reminds me of driving around Scotland! 😍 It's always difficult in the mild winter climate regions, because sometimes winter will linger around and then it's hurry hurry hurry to get everything in before the hot weather sets in. 🤪
Jenny, why don’t you just cut some of the tops off the rectangular shaped pieces so they’re a little lower than the arch. That way your arch takes precedent.
I actually enjoyed the ride scene because I've never been to California. Fun to see some scenery 😊 I don't mind seeing your baby steps, keeps the suspense going 😍 Your secret garden is going to be Magical 💖
My thought is that you could put the bench across from the bistro set and have a tiny side table on either side of the bench. This way, you can entertain another couple in the shade room with a layout conducive to conversation and everyone has a place to put their drink down.
Love the trellis idea! Your gardens will never be finished, remember that, there will always be something to work on. I’ve been working on mine for several years and it’s a work in progress all the time. Hugs from Texas!
Janey, love, love the "rust ' I have a" rusty headboard " in a planter with a Montana Mayleen clematis SLOWLY growing on it 🌿 The arches will be just gorgeous 🥰. From Georgia with love ❤
Love it! Will be amazing. So nice just to be able do whatever you want ! Hope they stayed put in the crazy whippy wind we had. Crazy. I grew up in Petaluma too :) Thanks for the inspiration
Love the idea. Have you though about making it a patio area with the pavers like you did in the greenhouse instead of a walkway. Keep the trellises but take out the walkway. It will seem more open and you can still put in the table and chairs and planting spaces in some areas by the water fountain.
Hi Janey, The arches and trellises will look great! I would stick with honeysuckle if you can, because the scent would just make that shaded area complete! (Other vines don't smell as consistently, in my experience.) I still cringe when you say, "my" garden and "my" house. You could have made an argument that the garden was yours, before Jason helped SO MUCH, but now your girls have a fairy garden, too, so even the garden is really not just yours! You really need to say "our house" and "our garden", especially when your family is right there! Family should Always come first, far before your brand, IMHO.🤔
I have the Red Flame Honeysuckle Vine in TN and its not invasive but it does grow fast and may bloom all year for you. Smells Heavenly. It blooms into Dec Here. Love your Arber and Panels. The White Bench looks a little Big compared to your table and Chairs.
I used to have a passion fruit vine in my Florida garden and I could not keep up with pruning it. It grew like crazy and ended up crushing my trellis to the ground. I had to start from square one and decided to grow grape vines on my new trellis and it is so much easier, just prune once a year and that’s it. I have an arch trellis and I am growing concord on one side and a green variety in the other. Your ideas look great Janey, good luck 👍
We have the same issue with hundreds of feet of fencing and neither us nor the neighbors have a financial surplus to put towards it right now. We all took a couple of hours recently and addressed any loose or missing nails/screws, and leaning, weak, or broken posts and boards on both sides. It was minimal cost to do this and we just bought ourselves at least another year, hopefully two. Such a great feeling!
This is going to be awesome! You should just have the fence replaced in the secret garden for now. If you don’t and you put your panels and plants in it will be so much more difficult to replace it later. Plus doing just this section won’t break the bank! I also love the idea some others mentioned about doing the “floor” in the garden room instead of the path! You could do it like a path w beds on either side for planting or you could do the whole room and container plant it!
Yay! So fun to see this video!! This was the day at Cottage Gardens that I got to meet you and Jason. Best day!! I love the trellises- they look great in that spot and the whole vision you have is beautiful.
Chickens are super fun, easy and so worth it. Just don’t buy your birds from feed stores, get them from local breeders or friends to avoid Mareks and other diseases. Secure your run well- I made a run out two tractor supply dog kennels that had fabric roof. Attached shed to it I converted into a coop (cut chicken door in side and bought nesting boxes and also used shelves that came with it for roosts, solar automatic chicken door). The run we put concrete pavers around in layer on outside and inside to protect them from predators. Had a solar light in shed. Floor of shed and run was sand we could clean with rake that we put screen on like giant kitty litter scoop and whole setup is safe, easy to clean, happy chickens and lots of eggs. Main cost was shed but we only had six hens so shed was small so not too pricey and cheaper than lots of coops and with cost of lumbar and supplies shed kit was worth it. One day build for whole thing .
Show Jason my chicken blog articles! My husband was a hard NO at first too😂Then he designed and built the little red coop for me… I think he secretly likes the girls now!😂😂
There are some honeysuckle plants that are not deciduous and the leaves turn a mahogany color in the fall. I saw the clip on a Utube channel. Happy Gardening 🌻💚
Hey Janey. You may need to have support posts on either side of those panels otherwise they may buckle under the weight of the vines. Although strong and used to reinforce concrete, if your side garden sits in a wind tunnel, you could have problems down the line. Love your vision though and hope it all pans out well.
Janey, great idea! Was thinking to create a wall in my yard all winter long. You gave me the perfect idea. Thanks!! In between the walls, I am building three tiered ponds up a hill side with a walk thru shed at top. Catwalk over the first pond steps leading to the shed to one side.
If you are interested in getting chickens I’d suggest you watch Next Level Gardening Best Chicken Breed For You. A good one for Jason to watch to…it might bring him round to your thinking😊🤞I really enjoy your videos. Love watching your progress.
I’m new to gardening but my chickens ruin everything 😂 our runner ducks however don’t scratch the ground and they eat slugs and snails expertly! They are also adorable and follow us all around ❤
Hall's lonicera japonica spreads in very WET areas via rhizomes AND above-ground runners AND dispersion of seed by birds, etc. We used to suck the nectar out of the flowers when we were kids. We were lucky we never got a little bug or insect in our snack!
Your inspiration photo of the foliage covered arch trellis is beautiful…I can see your vision for the shade garden…looking forward to seeing it develop🌸
It's going to be lovely Janey. I had an old cedar fence across the back of my garden. The cedar posts were fine -- sitting in concrete -- and no real problem. Rather than replace the entire fence, I kept the posts in tact and just installed new cedar pickets and horizontal support rails. It was a fraction of the cost.
Janey those rustic arches and trellis are fantastic! My backyard is large and long so over the years I have created ‘rooms’ using arches and hedges. I’m excited to see all the plants you use in your shade garden. I have large mature trees(which are a blessing for Redding’s summers!) but I’m always looking for ideas of plants that will thrive in the shadier areas. I have lots of hydrangeas, camellias, and impatiens but would love to find more flowering plants for my shade areas.
The secret garden is going to be lovely, the girls will have some pretty right out the windows. Maybe another fairy garden.? My friends mom had passion flower covering the back wall of their house, I ate those fruits like popcorn.
I got my rusted arbors from Green Acres for my Cottage Rose Garden. I love them. I had gotten one 20 years ago at a local nursery, which used to be amazing but it went out of business just about 5 years back and I was worried I wouldn't find anymore. Then I started seeing the rusted metal arbors, trellis's and other items at other nurseries. I was so happy that Green Acres has them and at great prices. I will start my tomatoes this month inside on my seed starting rack. I had a hard time keeping myself from starting them last month, but I knew it was too early. I should bring you some of the eggs from my chickens, once Jason tastes them and how much better flavor they have he will be won over. We used tree stakes driven into the ground to secure ours and it works great. Have a great rainy weekend, we will be getting up to 3 feet of snow and trying not to be annoyed about it.
Wow Janey 🌺. This shade garden will be amazing. I have 3 kind of honeysucle in my garden the goldflame honeysuckle and honeysuckle japonica and the shrub lonicera fragrantissima winter honeysuckl it has a strong fragrant smells . Have awonderful day .🌻🌷🌻
