    "most of the benefit is from the compound...' I didn't say there wouldn't be any improvement from wider tires, but the change would be relatively minimal compared to changing the compound. A greater contact area does not necessarily mean more friction (speaking generally about everything). The reason it does with tires is because more of the tire sinks in and meshes with the asphalt, meaning more friction. Softer compounds sink in further.

  • @hduncan2587

    Does it seem to be plowing a little with the new tires?

  • @EngineeringExplained
    @EngineeringExplained 11 лет назад +1

    It's not the width that creates the improvement, most of the benefit is from the compound of the tires. Also, assuming the Volk's are lighter, the idea is to reduce the rotational inertia of the wheels, theoretically increasing whp.

  • @fatboy19831
    @fatboy19831 11 лет назад

    This is so true. Sometimes going to a smaller lighter rim with a better compound improves transit response and performance. Folks like to fill up the wheel well and have a 40 foot turning diameter.

    The skinny stock tires are part of the fun. Makes the car oversteer more easily even with "just" 200 hp. Sure if you're looking for the best skidpad numbers or laptimes you'd want bigger tires.

  • @Ghostca
    @Ghostca 11 лет назад

    with the low available power of the FR-S a staggered setup would not produce better cornering performance, it would probably cause a grip imbalance between the front and the rear. A square setup is almost always preferable especially when you consider cost.

  • @fatboy19831
    @fatboy19831 11 лет назад

    If you like the Genesis coupe buy it. The base turbo is about the same price and it is much faster after the initial turbo lag. It is based on the 3900 pound Genesis sedan. It weighs some 700 pounds more than the purpose built FRS. You can feel that weight and it has LESS room for the driver and a sloppy shiftier. Also you have to get the $2000 more "R" to equal its braking performance and to get a limited slip.You know after a few years the FRS will hold up much better.

    The FRS/BRZ have to be revved to make power. If not they will bog down. When they tested the BRZ they used your method and hit 60 in 7.2 seconds vs 6.4 with the 5k clutch drop. All cars are different and require different methods to get the best results.

  • @fatboy19831
    @fatboy19831 11 лет назад

    Slightly different engine mapping. More top end on the Scion. More mid-range torque on the Subaru. The BRZ has NAV and HIDs standard. FRS has free scheduled maintenance for 2 years.

    Nice, this might actually win me over. I wonder how much gain you would see with a intake, headers and mild (not loud) exhaust? I can't live wth 200hps. I would need at least 225-235 to get me around town.

    My last car weighed 2500 pounds and had 140hp it was a blast to drive (2000 Celica GT). The BRZ (FRS) is better in every way. I love it. 200 hp is plenty for a 2700 pound car. If you want power you can get the 700 pound heaver 305 hp Mustang V6 for the same price. Or the GT for 30K. Both wonderful cars but not as fun to toss around on a back road at close to the speed limit. There are tons of sedan based 300+ hp, cars out there for guy like you that think they are the fastest guy on the block.

    There are so many high hp options. None are as much fun to drive well with the exception of the much less practical and powerful MX5. Buy one. Scion is having no problems moving the FRS and Subaru is sold out till 2013. I had no problem handing Subaru 26k for my BRZ. For those that dont mind the weight and size the 305 hp Mustang 6 with the track package is the only car that comes close to being as satisfying for the SAME price.

    So many people are missing the point of this car. Its not supposed to be super fast in a straight line. Its a drivers car with tremendously good handling. Its not something you drag race in the streets like a high school douchebag, Its a car you would take to an autocross event, get a good lap time, and have a fun time driving it. Its plenty more fun to drive a lower powered car at its absolute limits around a tight track, than to baby a high powered car through the corners.

And yes for 25K there is plenty of other options for a light RWD sports car with a more powerful engine than this one. Have you even tested this car? have you looked and felt the inside of it? Some of the worst interior out there, If this FR-S/BRZ had a STI engine you could justify the 26K price tag, and I would probably be singing a different tune. Its about value for the price not just the price.

    Subaru's are not as reliable as Toyota's. They have made huge improvements like the entire automobile industry especially the Koreans. Hyundai's are much more likely to have major mechanical problems. The Genesis Coupe base price is $24,250. Scion FRS $24,955. The Powerhouse Mustang V6 starts at 23k, 25k with the track package. It is a much more powerful and practical car. Not as much fun. It has 800 pounds more mass. Everything else is FWD or 2 tons in this price range. Except the MX5.
