I've gone through a similar thought process of now holding out more for higher grade copies as I've learned that all the books will come around again some day
Yeah, I no longer think that this will be my only chance to ever get my hands on a copy of Doctor Strange 6, so I'll just take whatever condition I can get. I've learned to let the deals come to me instead of chase them. Same goes for investing in general; I try not to chase news and speculation anymore. There are plenty of good investments that come across your radar naturally if your mind and wallet are always open to it.
I enjoyed this topic. I'm currently dealing with this issue but with raw books that I'm trying to get above 9.4. I've followed your tip of waiting and watching the Mile High weekly discounts and purchasing NM copies at 65% off their back-issue prices. I enjoy your videos and takes although my collecting strategy is moving away from runs and focusing on great covers and major keys. I recently picked up Wonder Woman 184, the Adam Hughes Golden Age homage cover, just last week from Mile High. It was listed as in near mint 65%, I believe I wound up paying about $75.
I just got a shipment of NM books from Mile high today, and the number of spine ticks was disappointing. Luckily one of two I needed with a perfect spine came through. I have that Wonder Woman! Got it off the stands for cover price. A rare win for me, usually I’m behind the curve.
@seanmitchell8151 I ordered Omega Men 3 MN and WW 184, I haven't opened Omega Men because I'm waiting for WW to arrive. I sure hope these are true NMs. I bought two copies of the 1st Winter Soldier, Nasi & CCP flag versions. The Nasi flag cap cover was definitely a 9.8 candidate..
Thank you! I created the spreadsheets I use to help me manage my collection. I found that no online collection management tool provided all of the features and capabilities I need so I built my own.
Thank you! Same here... Love them and love flipping through them, grading them, smelling them, putting them in fresh bags and boards. But also wish they were a grade or two higher. They don't need to be 9.8s... but 6s and 7s on these are not as valuable as they once were.
Thanks! I really like those early issues of the second volume of Doctor Strange. I picked up issue one a couple of years ago so I'm getting close to a full run. Congrats on completing your JCWoW run!
There are a lot of factors at play here, including getting distracted and being lazy. I will not allow myself to open a box of comics and just put them in a bin. I need to sit with each book, grade, catalog, spreadsheet, store, etc. There are times where if I have two shipments I pick the more exciting one to open and deal with and then a shipment will get neglected.
For the most part I agree with you. In some cases there is value around 8.5-9.4 as well, but those are trickier to track down especially when determining which books to bid on (out of 300-book auctions). What I try to do now is find undergraded books that are capable of jumping into the 9.0-9.8 range and letting books like the ones in this shipment go or be content with keeping them raw.
@@theblackphantomhd Yes, I agree. There's also a lot of price compression in the lower grades & mid grades can be volatile. High grades do sit for a long time. It's definitely a good time to be a buyer atm. I'm collecting golden Age non-key, so the higher grades are more achievable. Plan on holding long-term. Non-keys seem to be rarer in general.
If you do the math, it only takes 1-2 x to realize only keys, big keys, grails are worth investing actual money in. But... the other important major thing is the tremendous amount of time invested. Why have 5,000 books no one wants when you could ha 20-50 investment grade books. Less to manage less to sell less to look up, and more liquid due to desirability.

It kinda depends on if you are going to buy for your collection because what you like and if you are basing your entire collection on value

F in frajeelay joke never dies
Love the spreadsheet you’re using. Did you use a template or did you create it yourself?

Great Vid...Good advice too...I just love those books!

Awesome Doctor Strange covers. I saw a few that I need to pick up. I just finished a VF+/NM run of John Carter Warlord of Mars.

I can’t imagine having a box of books sitting around for a year. How do you do it?

These books never should be considered for grading, unless you are going for a 9.8, maybe a 9.6.

My investment strategy is:
Golden Age - 6.0/7.0
Silver Age - 7.0/8.0
Bronze Age - 9.0/9.2
Modern - 9.8
That is a very expensive investment strategy, more books from Golden - Bronze sell better at low than at high grade.

All worthless books. Graded or not.
Thanks for watching and taking a moment to leave your feedback!
