  • Why does one comic book cost more than another? This knowledge is critical if you are buying or selling.
    In this video I cover three general factors that contribute to comic book pricing:
    * Notability
    * Rarity
    * Condition
    Then I provide three tools to help you determine more precise values for your books:

      @@Dwight_ Hi Dwight. Not at all. Of course, I want the comic book market to do well, but don't like it when it gets too hot (i.e., late 2020 through early 2022). I'm glad it's cooling off a bit. I still think blue chip comics are a good investment for the long haul. Nevertheless, I'm patiently waiting on the sidelines for books to cool down a little more before I jump back in.

    I was deep into comic collecting 40 years ago - cool to see that even in this digital age there's still a healthy market for collecting and selling - blown away to see that set of Spidermans that sold for $100,000 !?!? Never knew about SEVEN SEAS but that's definitely a treasure!!

      Hi Devan. Great to hear from you. Ah...the thrill of the hunt for a truly rare book! I'm excited for you. Let me acknowledge that is incredibly difficult to determine FMV on a book like you are talking about. I have two questions for you. What's the age of the book? And, where is this book being offered (e.g., Ebay, Heritage Auction, a comic book shop)? I can give you a better answer if I know this information.

There are four 9.6s in existence with one selling for $900 a few years ago. The 9.8 is the highest ever and currently listed on eBay for $4999. An issue i am finding is that i also can't find out how many of these 1981 copies were printed but they seem to be exceedingly rare

      @@devandaringer7420 Wow! Thanks so much for sharing. Never heard of that book and honestly don't know enough about it or those that collect it to give you specific guidance. Nevertheless, I had fun learning about it through a Google search. Like you said, very few sales but a few popped up on GPAnalysis including the 9.6 for $900 you referenced and a 9.0 going for $1120 in the same month (Oct, 2020). My guess for FMV of a 9.8 is as good as yours because there is so little sales data. It is true that a 9.8 usually sell for quite a bit more than a 9.6 but we only have that one data point for a 9.6. Further, b/c it is a one shot, you can't even look at other books in a series for guidance. My guidance then is general. Ask yourself what your goals are. Do you want a good looking copy or do you need to have the best copy? Is your main purpose to make a profit or is it a book that you have to have in your collection? If having the 9.8 is worth 5k to you personally, then buy it; you'll always cherish it. If you are concerned about the book primarily as an investment, something to be aware of...right now, there is only 1 9.8 on census. Is it truly the only 9.8 out there? If it is not, what would happen to the value if one or more other 9.8s show up on CGC census? Further, where is the demand for this book coming from? Is it strong, will it continue to be strong? ...I certainly can't answer those questions. Good luck and thank you for introducing me to an interesting book.

Where do you look for this info? Are you just looking at print runs and using that number or is it more of an estimation? I use gpa, eBay, cgc census, but when trying to figure out if a book is truly rare im just not really sure where to look to see how many of them are still around. Any info about this would be great. • @kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842
      @kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842  3 года назад +1

      Hi Damien. Thanks for the kind words and excellent question. Estimating existing copies of a particular book is far from an exact science. Print runs give you an idea of the upper limit. But, especially for silver-age and golden-age books, we know that many haven't survived. Personally I use the CGC census to give me a sense of relative scarcity among key books. I've also been turning to the CGC boards to hear speculation in the chat rooms. That's where I plucked many of my speculative numbers. There are some big time dealers there who have a good sense of the market. Nevertheless, opinions vary considerably. even among experts.

    • @kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842
      @kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842  2 года назад

      Hi Sunshine 24. I'd first get an overstreet price guide for a quick and dirty valuation of your books. If you are sitting on thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, I would suggest consigning with one of the auction houses (heritage, comicconnect, or comiclink) or mycomicshop. Alterntively, there are a few great e-bay sellers like SparkleCity or Blizzard who accept consignments too. At worst, you can likely get 70% of the value of those books. One of the problems with having someone value your books -- without your having an idea -- is that they may lowball you and then offer to buy them. If you consign the books somewhere, they'll want your books to sell for top dollar. And, they should earn a percentage 10% to 30% for high-end books. Good luck!

    Hello, I'm just now getting into comics. Buying and selling. I don't see myself as a collector per say. I just look at most them as stocks. I would like to buy only the ones that have a trend upwards. I was a baseball/ football collector and realized I spent way too much money over the years hunting the "gems" by buying multiple boxes and lots from estate sales. I don't want to go down that path again. What price/value resource would you use on the go. Say at a garage sale and someone gives you a price. How do you look that up "on the spot" to determine its value. Was at a garage sale today and the guy said $3 each or or he would sell the whole lot for $250. Wow. Didnt have the time to look thru them or the resource to price any of them

    • @kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842
      @kestonsoldschoolcomicbooks6842  Год назад

      Hi jgroomasb. A lot of folks use GoCollect to give them a rough sense of value. Like with sports cards, grade also plays a big part in price. So, you want to make sure you can size up condition quickly. From what I gather from folks who buy collections (I'm not one), the key is to be familiar with keys and mini-keys. Can you spot a $50 or a $100 book quickly? It's usually a key or two or several mini-keys that makes ore breaks the deal for the buyer. Mint Hunter comics talks quite a bit about this. There are several examples of a signed Simpsons #1 that went for about $1,000 but they usually had one signature, not three. One 9.8 book with Matt Groening and Bill Morrison sold for over 4k. One concern though -- CGC won't verify signatures unless they witnessed them. So, if you wanted to verify the book, I'd advice submitting to CBCS who will grade and authenticate already existing signatures.

      Hi Aram. I appreciate the comment. You are right, for those who recognize the Copper Age. I consider any book I bought from my youth as "Modern" ...haha. Nice point again about the silver age. I recently watched a video by Automatic Comics who was examining silver age key prices at each of their respective most common CGC grades. They fell between 3.0 and 5.0. So, right on regarding the 4.0 being average for a silver age book!

      Hi Commodore Rook. I appreciate your sharing this painful story. Sure, dealers should make money for their time and effort...but shouldn't completely screw over sellers. A good deal in my mind is one that is fair for buyer and seller. When I watch people on youtube say they picked up a $5,000 book for a $1, I always think about the person they got the book from. I'm going to think more about the ethics of buying and selling...an interesting topic with a lot of gray area.
