    This show was full of knowledge! First we start off with "Goalie George" on how to add weights & hiding it...if you will! Now that's neat! Then we have James on how to rebuild a GP60M. Wow, that's like a lot of work & a lot to remember! I do have...C.R.S. "Can't Remember Stuff" I can't wait for Ken to build an n- gauge layout. My n- gauge layout is 4' x 6'. I love the Santa Fe runby @ the beginning of the show. The end of the show i love the..Athearn BNSF SD 70AC'e 9376. Don't forget my Athearn MoPac SD 70 AC'e..to top it off! This Is The "Best Hobby In The World" Till Next Time! MoPac Jack "Be Safe & Be Kind To One Another" Let's Run Some Trains!

    Good LORD @JRegier80 James Regier...that's a lot of information in one segment, but purely fascinating. I know next to nothing about DCC, but this show never ceases to inspire me to tear something apart and try something new. Outstanding work on a GP60M from God's Railroad, and it was cool to see pictures of them on territory that I now run over in Kansas. Great job to you and Ken this month.

    James super excellent job. I just finished adding sound and 20 LEDs to and HO Atlas ALCO C-420 so I have a pretty good idea of what is involved with this type of upgrade.. I wish I have seen your video before, I could have saved a lot of time and frustration. The final method I used for LED installations is basically identical to yours except that I have to add a function only decoder to have independent control of some of the lights. For the ground lights i used the Nix assembly with a 0201 LED instead of the fiber optic that comes with it. The key to success is patience and never give up. Once again, excellent work and thank you for sharing.
    One more thing, you can retrieve flying LEDs by swiping the LEDs landing areas with a magnet.

      @@JamesRegiersModels It's been a long time since i did this but I think I used the debonder to remove the bulbs and then used a drill bit for the proper hole size to insert the leds.

    • @ZachPumphery
      @ZachPumphery 4 года назад

      In my experience you should be extremely careful with debonder. It's thin, and can run easily. I just about ruined an Athearn GP38-2's paint job with it (thankfully touch up paint and weathering concealed this nicely) If it pools and sits, it can warp a shell. That being said, it works great for its intended purpose, but keep it off factory paint for the sake of caution.

    Ken I liked the show this month and was excited to see James's rebuild as I have a couple I'd like to rebuild. Unfortunately the video was so blurry in spots, it was a waste of time to watch it. James did a fine job of explaining what he was doing but I just couldn't see it. Sorry but it shouldn't have posted like that. Just my opinion. The rest of the show was as good as I expected. Thanks Ken, keep em coming!

    • @JamesRegiersModels
      @JamesRegiersModels 4 года назад

      It’s a function of needing to focus on details at a macro level, at close range, and with limited focal length. Note that in some instances, the cigar band on the nose was clean and focused, but the number boards were already blurring. The focal length Ken uses for many of his layout construction segments or George used for his weighting segment gets great focus with almost no blur, but the finely focused details are generally not as important. The LEDs, wires, lenses, and other fine, detailed stuff that are the whole point of what I’m doing would have been invisible because of distance.

  • @jamescraft672

    George's piece on adding lead weight was neat. But it reminded me of a column Joe Fugate wrote (MRH Running Extra, 11-2018) about using tungsten instead of lead. From his article: Tungsten is about 70% more dense than lead, and it's far less toxic than lead.

  • @unfitforpurpose6422
    @unfitforpurpose6422 4 года назад

    Have been using lead for 30years and my lead levels in my blood are still normal...lead is fine to work with so long as you have ventilation and don’t go eating it..or inhale the fumes when melting it down almost all things in life are cancer causing nowadays...yes tungsten is a good alternative to lead but at almost 5 times the cost...pewter or white metal are another way to add weight...on very light rolling stock like flat beds and things I wrap lead wire around the axles inside the trucks that way it is never seen and then I can run them in the middle of the consist and not at the end

      Silicone Conformal Coating. 422B from MG Chemicals. It’s available on Amazon. It’s generally used to isolate pc boards, but works nicely for solder joints in magnet wire, also. It’s not quite as effective as shrink tubing, but much more versatile. It can also be used as an adhesive to route wires along the shell.

      As far as expenses are concerned, I have usually taken the approach that if I can take a good eBay find and upgrade it myself, if I can’t match a new premium model, I can at least get something respectable that I can take pride in. And at least so far, solving the puzzles along the way provides a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction.

      It's an issue with the technology I have available and physical limitations, I'm afraid. Macro focus is lost with so much as a couple inches of movement toward or away from the camera. Unfortunately, the ideal of working on everything on the desk, which would maintain the same focal length, is impossible. When I hold objects above the desk to work on them at a better angle, macrofocus is easily compromised. Unfortunately, the autofocus does not always compensate well, especially if the target is the size of my fingertip or smaller. Manual focus will get a sharper initial focus, but with slight movement... Glad you found it useful anyway.

      The big problem is that at the macro level of focus, the range of focus gets to be so finite that even an inch of movement toward or away from the camera will throw the focus off. Yet the close focus is necessary to illustrate the Fine detail and lighting work I am talking about. I am doing the best I can with the technology I have available , and hopefully it is enough that folks can get ideas for projects of their own.
