- Evgeny Mikhailovich Belyaev sings Nightingales (Соловьи or Solovii) with the Alexandrov Ensemble in the mid-1970s, conducted by Boris Alexandrovich Alexandrov.
The year is ca.1975. The Ensemble is wearing the new uniform which replaced the tunics on 1 January 1970. Belyaev left the Ensemble in 1980. It is probably the mid-70s because Belyaev readjusted his technique to be suitable for singing Russian Romances around this time, and he could not have sung as sensitively as this before around 1975.
I now believe that this performance is an homage to Georgi Pavolovich Vinogradov (Георгий Павлович Виноградов) who was a superb tenor with the Ensemble until 1951 when his career ended suddenly. Vinogradov is said to have been a singing teacher in Moscow until his death in 1980. Belyaev's voice was far more powerful than Vinogradov's: but here Belyaev is not just imitating Vinogradov's 1950 record; he is re-living the spirit and perfection of it.
In the original record, Vinogradov declines the final high note, and gives homage to the dead soldiers by bowing out with the low note. However the high note at the end here reads like a celebration of the soldiers' sacrifice, and at the same time a celebration of Vinogradov's gift Just my interpretation; but there is no doubt that there is a tight musical interrelationship between Belyaev, Vinogradov and B. Alexandrov who showcased them both
Belyaev is incomparable. There have been so many great tenors but only one of him. He was always the sweetest, most powerful of singers, but by this time his pure voice has developed a clarity and discipline that is rarely heard. His technique is flawless. I am bowled over every time I hear him.
I fully agree!!Nobody in the eternity can come even close to his performance and many tried and some are still trying/i.e. Vadim Ananev currend soloist/without success. He was not called/on another note/ the first and only MISTER KALINKA for nothing!!!
I stand corrected the best ever red army choir soloists is Georgi Vinogradov for the simple reason that BELYAEV is not a singer he is GOD!!!!!
Евгений Беляев Русский соловей ему нет равных в этом Память о нем всегда сохранится в русской душе Спасибо создателю этого ансамбля и его сопровождению Мы знаем эти песни и гордимся Русским солдатом что спас Мир

thanks to God (and socialism) the Red Army Choir has existed, and I can listen to them when I'm tired of living... probably my heart is as old fashioned as they are, with their lyrical faith ... thanks for sharing
You are so right. Belyaev was a member of the Party, and the choir's arrangement is straight out of old Kazan Cathedral, which is where old man Alexandrov came from. The Alexandrovs were practising Eastern Orthodox. Stalin knew this and protected them. So yes, God and Socialism co-existed in the music for sure. And it works, whatever your religion and politics may be.
@Roi des chats Wow, you put words on something I didn't understand until I read your comment.
I'm freaking glad I'm subbed! Thank you very much for this nice vid.
Greetings from Norway!
Lyrics in English.
Nightingales, nightingales do not disturb the soldiers,
Let's get some sleep soldiers,
Let her sleep a little.
Came to us on the front spring
Soldiers was not sleep -
Not because the gun beat,
And because once again sing,
Forgetting that there are fights,
Crazy singing nightingales.
Nightingales, nightingales do not disturb the soldiers,
Let's get some sleep soldiers,
A little sleep.
But the war for the nightingale!
In fact the nightingale own life.
Not sleeping soldiers, remembering home
And over the pond garden green,
Where nightingales sing all night,
A soldier in the house waiting.
Nightingales, nightingales do not disturb the soldiers,
Let's get some sleep soldiers,
Let her sleep a little.
And tomorrow will again fight -
Oh well appointed destiny,
So we go without dolyubiv,
From our wives, from our cornfields;
But with each step in the battle
Us closer to home in his native land.
Nightingales, nightingales do not disturb the soldiers,
Let's get some sleep soldiers,
Let her sleep a little.
This beautiful music transcends nationalities, borders and politics.
Замечательно
I don't have a translation, but I understand that the singer is telling the nightingale to be quiet as the soldiers are sleeping, in preparation for their last battle. I believe that this is figurative, i.e. the soldiers have died, and they are preparing to act out their bravery in heaven.

Thank you for your wonderful comment. I agree, and I'm sad that I never heard him sing live. He was a great imitator, and there are many jokes hidden in his performances - though not in this one, which makes me cry.
Chudesnaja pesnia, spasiba bolshoe Artistam 🥰🙂🥰
I ves genialnyj Chor Borisa Aleksandrowa 🙂🙂🥰
What a voice!
Genialnyj Belaev pojot kak solovej 🥰🥰🥰
Wonderful technique.
Yes, and that was always Boris' big joke - he'd have his soloist doing the impossible, then the whole choir would blow your mind by doing the same thing. They had a great teacher who gave them complete control of chest voice and/or head voice, especially in the upper register, and that allowed powerful effects.
Jewgeni Bilajew gehört zu meinen Liblingssängern ❤❤❤❤❤
One of the most beautiful war songs ever written.

I think they are both great in different ways. The tradition, following Lemeshev, Vinogradov then Nikitin then Belyaev here, is to be able to imitate the technique of past great singers, and then sing even better, or at least in an interesting way. They had very different voices and personalities.
This is my favorite version of evening bells by the Don Kosaks Sergej Jaroff Tenor Andrej Bieliki 1962.
Quel talent, sans comprendre les paroles, sa voix me bouleverse...
