      @1:03:39 ... so it makes sense for necomers to not be a cheapskate and go for the CRF300 Rally instead. It saves time, you have a windshield, LED headlights, a skid plate and a 12.5l tank. The suspension still sucks for big boyes. :)

    • @Shem
      @Shem  3 года назад

      @@worldhello1234 Yes, indeed, providing that they improved the windscreen on the CRL300 Rally, as the one on CRF250L was too short for taller riders. Nonetheless, the CRF300 Rally with larger tank and reduced weight seems like a very appealing bike.

    Very useful video Shem. Thank you. I installed an IMS tank on my 2019 CRF250L today. The fuel line connects with the bottom of the fuel pump with a quick release connector. Disconnecting this made the job easier as the pump swap can be carried out on the bench.

    I bought the Chinese-manufactured tank for a 2016, too. It fit pretty much perfectly. If you turn the front mount around facing outward you can use the OEM Honda tank mounts and rubbers. No issues with rubbing, no touching of the Flatland Racing radiator guard on mine, and a bit of wiggling and pressure to mount at the back of the tank first. Thanks for your tutorial. It was really helpful to see how things went together.

Would appreciate any advice you can offer, I don’t understand advantages and disadvantages.

    • @TheScatman89
      @TheScatman89 3 года назад

      @@fosterdogg Yes that confused me aswell. I searched around for it, and apparently the manufacturer vent hose, needs to be plugged in with the IMS one (the one that goes ontop of your gas cap) for it to be "legal" so think "emissions standards".
      Ive seen you can get a little plug, just ontop of your gas cap, alot of dual sport bikes have that, I guess that is an option, I really doubt anyone cares if it meets emission standards or not. I did it the "right way", and if it bothers me too much, I might just blind the factory vent hose off, and zip tie it so it doesnt bounce around under the tank, but right now the gas cap is not going to fall off the bike, when I refuel cause the vent hose (ims one) is stuck on the cap which I see as a positive atm. Hope that helps! - this is my first dual sport bike too.. so everything is new to me aswell :)

      @@willisbcteoh9840 Just seen this comment - sorry to hear about your trouble. Have you resolved it now? Without being there in person or having and in-depth conversation about it is next to impossible to troubleshoot it properly. I'd suggest trying to 'break' everything into smaller chunks, and do it bit by bit following logic. What components you might have touched while working on it? It's likely to be cables and fuel hoses. So start by checking whether the power is getting to the fuel pump / spark plug and try to go from there.

      Not quite. It's a good indication of when you are running low, however, I tend to rely on my odometer more. My average fuel consumption is astound 3.6L/Km (78mpg) , so I know I should get about 354Km (220mi) from a full tank.

    Hi Shem, on a completely different subject, when did you fit the Renthal bars? Did you drill them for the locating lugs on the switch gear? I'm guessing so.. :-)

    • @Shem
      @Shem  3 года назад

      Hey David. I fitted Renthal bars couple of months ago becasue I crashed the bike during one of my winter trips and bent the stock bars. I was quite happy with the shape of the sock bars, so I found the Renhal model (971-08-BK) that was close in shape to that. I belive this Renthal model is fitted into the CRF450L as stock bars. And yes, I had to drill the holes for assemblies on both sides - the bars are quite thick so I did not need to drill through, just blind holes ;).

      @@Shem I did exactly the same on the CRF250 Rally with pro taper evo bars. You should have done a video! lots of guys just file down or remove the lugs, wouldn't trust that for security especially on the throttle side.. Great in depth videos by the way.

    Now you have the benefit of more experience with the bike, do you still stand by your initial spreadsheet findings when you did the comparison between the 250L and the Rally, and would the new 300 Rally have changed your mind, or would the weight differential still feature for green laning applications?

    • @Shem
      @Shem  3 года назад +1

      Yes, for how I use the bike, my opinion has not changed - I'd still choose the 250L version over the 250 Rally. In terms of weight, I'm going through a weight reduction project right now, and I'm planning to shave off around 10kg from the bike; I'll make a separate video about it.
      In terms of the new bike, I obviously like the idea of slightly more power, but it is not a deal breaker for me. Even if you put a 60hp engine it in, it will never be as composed at the motorway speeds as heavier and more aerodynamic bikes. What I like about the 300 Rally is that is comes with a 12.8l tank, which if you are planning longer trips, is a welcomed addition. I felt that the tank of the 250 Rally wasn't really that much of an improvement over the 250L's tank. So if someone planned really long trips on the 250 Rally, they would have had to either change the tank or carry extra fuel somewhere else.
      Looking at the RRP of the CRF300L vs CRF300 Rally, there is over £1k difference in price. This is a lot of money that could be spend on accessories and making the bike lighter... On top of that, the CRF300L is 142kg whereas CRF300 Rally is 153kg - so the weight difference of 11kg is still there. Without taking both bikes for a ride, it is hard to tell, but looking at the specs and the price difference, I'd probably go for the CRF300L.
      Or potentially look for a relatively new CRF250L which are bound to go down in price now.

    • @GooseDave
      @GooseDave 3 года назад

      @@Shem Hi Shem. Sounds like a good plan for your application. For my mileage, the 300 Rally will be ideal. I do a 120-mile round trip every Saturday and ADV work in the summer. My 900 was getting too heavy at my age, so the 300 Rally will be much more nimble and get me to more remote places again. Good luck and enjoying the videos. My SRC Moto rack and can is on it's way. I can live with the extra weight and is a good fit for the "Goose" motorcycle tent. Cheers

      @@Tanuki65 Thanks. The weight reduction video may be a while as it gets quite expensive once you've changed the heaviest parts. I'm in between how for to take it now...
