I had the pleasure of having Phil as my theory teacher at Star Lake Music Camp in New Jersey. He also sat next to me in the Star Lake Band. Talk about intimidating. Such a wonderful man. And his whole family are good people. Being a Salvationist, I’ve had so many great influences in my life, And Phil is one of those people. As Salvation Army brass bandsmen, we learn as Phil said, to sing through our instrument. While growing up in the Salvation Army, my father and Grandfather were both Salvation Army BandMasters and taught me to sing through my cornet and most of all, give all the Glory to God!!! Thank you Phil for being a part of my early teachings, may God continue to Bless you. Mark

This is a great interview! No doubt that most trumpet players have a different experience thank Phil Smith with auditions, etc., but it's a testament to his great talent. Thanks so much Mike.

hard to believe but I was in Julliard with Phil.I changed careers and he went on to Chicago and NY Phil after Gerard Schwartz. Lucky I me I had the chance to go to Juilliard.

It was in the news today that Phil Smith announced his retirement from the Philharmonic at the end of the 2013-14 season. The man is a legend. He'll be so missed in NYC. Expect your viewer count for this interview to go up!

I’d be curious to hear Phil assess how much more he might have learned under Bud if he stayed in Chicago another 5 or 10 years.
