My advice re lip balm is to put one where you use them. I have a lip balm in my desk, my purse, my nightstand, and my bathroom. Because I never move them, they are never lost. I use it than put it back
I do the same with the glasses I use for watching TV.They live in the tray where I keep the remotes as watching TV is the only time I wear those particular glasses!
Sometimes you just need a friend who has no attachment to your stuff to come help you. Whether it is at the start or to finish it. I do this with my mom because decluttering is very overwhelming for her. I will take her donation bags out of the house too.
That is so nice you can help your mom. You are right it is so much easier to see things as an outsider.
I understand this person's feeling so much. The most difficult part is finding things homes, figuring out what belongs where so that not every drawer and cabinet becomes a junk drawer of random objects.

When it's things that you use everyday like toilet paper cleaning supplies Etc I think that you should have a good supply of those. What if something happened that you could not leave your home for say two weeks a month say because of a natural disaster or a quarantine you would be happy to have enough supplies in your home to last your family for a good amount of time. I don't think those are the items to minimize.

Regarding the chapstick I would put one in my car and one in my purse or wherever I get ready in the am.
I love the advice you have about when we realize we have a stockpile of a product doesn't mean you have to just throwing it all out. Once you've examined your stockpile just try to use what's usable and not buy anymore until you've used what you have. Great way to approach this.
I find using everything you can up really saves money. For a while there is more in your cupboards but once its all used up then it looks more minimal. 😀💛

Sometimes we just need an organizing friend
One way you can get rid of good toiletries and skin/hair care is to donate to battered women’s shelters or homeless shelters. They are sooo grateful for everything like that. I worked with a women’s shelter for several years and the women and children come with NOTHING because that’s the nature of having to leave their house without looking like they are leaving for good.

The hard part I think is realizing how much money we have spent. And how much stuff we actually have.

Why in the world would you buy a house with that many major problems. How did it pass inspection. Hopefully you got a great deal. It's fun to do all the projects but the cost is tremendous especially in California.
Honestly, it's hard to find new homes with no problems in California in the neighborhood that you want. Almost everyone here ends up buying an older home and fixing it up. There really isn't a choice.

Great decluttering, but I felt sad about the bag of trash - was it all really thrown away - couldn't someone have used some of the items - maybe a women's refuge?
