With how large the area of sky is that these things take up, there are probably hundreds of millions of galaxies behind them, so there are probably at least a few hundred million active supernovae going on in every image, if not billions. Just none you can actually see with your naked eye. ;) Sorry, I'm a pedant, I can't help myself.
