I agree 100% about being angry with that teacher and girl at the hospital, everyones lives don't stop with other people's problems and you try to squeeze in time and practices of life whenever you can!!!!!!!!!!!
For those wondering Angelo was pronounced brain dead and taken off life support and thw show is called switched at birth. Great show woth accurate sign too!
In high-school I had a deaf friend who had to re-take the SATs because she didn't put her pencil down when the proctor said "pencils down". She kept working until he actually came up to her to tell her the test was over. She tried to explain she was deaf and she didn't know but he still failed her. I was so pissed especially since at the beginning she talked to him and he said he would switch the lights off then on so she would know the time was over, but he didn't.
Yeah no if your in the US and that happens you can report the teacher ADA states you must make reasonable modifications to polices and procedures to accommodate the need of a disability. To fail her based upon a disability is a discrimination charge an ADA violation
@@KageYureii-yg4wp this was over 5 years ago, and neither of us were very versed in the rules and such. My friend told the principal about what happened and she was allowed to retake the test without the first 0 going on her record, but I don't remember if the teacher got consequences or not.
Here is the thing, I understand why she would be upset, but being in the hospital waiting doesn’t help the patience get better, and not all family members can be in, so it’s totally okay for others to be doing something while waiting for news Her remark about being a “stupid test” is uncalled for, she came as fast as possible

context: this show is called switched at birth. the ginger hair girl, daphne, is deaf and that’s why they use sign language. daphnes father got in a car accident the night prior (because of a brain aneurism rupting) and daphne needed to take the SATs. Her father seemed fine and told her he’d want her to go take the SATs and that if anything went wrong she has her phone. So that’s why she seemed really nervous while taking the exam. The SATs are extremely strict so that’s why the teacher couldn’t be lenient either. I forget exactly what happens medically but he went brain dead and that’s when she read the lips of the nurses in the background. The brunette, Bay, is the girl that was switched at birth with daphne and she is the biological daughter of the man, Angelo. She was upset at Daphne for leaving to take the SATs, but yeah he went brain dead and dies unfortunately. He originally walked out on Daphne and her mother when they were young and when she went deaf and he accused her of having an affair as her mother and him were both hispanic and daphne was a white ginger girl. She was finally starting to connect with him again, and this happened. He also got to connect with Bay as well, but the situation was sad. I recommend the show it’s really good overall.
I THOUGHT THEY LOOK FAMILIAR!!!! I started that show a few years ago but my mom made me drop it because it was too old for me. Which looking back, yeah it was lol
So Bay was right. You should never take such an important test like that when your worried and messed up in the head about family members or loved ones in hospitals.
I remember watching this show back in like 6th grade or 8th grade, we didn’t get through all episodes but I had the best D/HH teachers I could wish for.
I had a similar experience during my SAT. My little sister attempted suicide the night before our in the woods and I was out there searching for her. She ended up being found alive and was taken to the hospital but when we requested to have my SAT be taken in an isolated setting they told me it was too late and I had to sit in a room full of people while I didn’t even know how she was doing.
Some people can sail through family emergencies with no problems. Others take an emotional slug to the gut. When this happens it is difficult to make good decisions about many different things. This doesn't mean that they are dumb, bad or selfish. They are in emotional turmoil.
@@rhondaaa9614 Those suggestions are great...in hindsight. Generally teenagers are the people taking SATs. They already are not the greatest decision makers, even moreso in times of crisis. With age comes wisdom.
Sorry that happened. Yeah the reason is they gotta get your own proctor (who’s licensed and such) if it was brought up right at exam time they have no way to get one in time since they all get taken and hard plastic sealed to protect integrity of the exam and no one wants to get in trouble with you saying you didn’t get the full allotted time/ exams we’re not properly conducted. Its why they ask kids with exceptions if they’d want one before hand so they’re there and ready. Hope you passed or it all went well tho!
While it's true that hospitalized family members need your help and support, you can't put your entire life on hold either. Most people can't afford to. The SAT is important for people who want to go to college and may need to bank on academic scholarships to fund their education. Also, you only get to take the actual test for free once. You have to pay to retake it. EDIT: Plus, in this scenario, Angelo told her, when he was still okay, that she should go and take the test. Everybody and every circumstance is different guys, nobody should be forced to do things they don't or can't do.
True. Plus, stuff like this will breed resentment. Imagine being reminded constantly that you cost someone their future because you couldn't tell the difference between showing support and having sacrifice. There are times where both do coincide but not always. I've been there and done that, hopefully never again. I used to blame my brother for making me miss junior prom because he had his wisdom teeth removed that day. Parents wanted to go on a date night. Grandma asked why I didn't have prom pictures for her, so I told her the reason I couldn't go. I thought she would get mad at my brother, but she was more mad at my parents.
Absolutely, you're spot on. Balancing life's responsibilities with the urgent needs of a hospitalized loved one is incredibly challenging. While being there for family in times of crisis is important, it's equally valid to recognize that life doesn’t pause, especially when big milestones like the SAT are involved. For students banking on scholarships, the SAT could be a make-or-break opportunity for their future. It’s a tough situation where emotions run high, and it’s easy for misunderstandings to happen. The person who took the test likely feels torn between their goals and family expectations, while the others might interpret it as indifference, even if that’s not the case. These moments really highlight how people cope differently under stress-and how communication (or the lack of it) can create conflict. Did the show’s resolution feel fair to you, or did it leave you wanting more closure?
This is really different for everyone. The resentment can go both ways. One of my family members was forced to do a band audition for college and wasn’t permitted to leave till performance was over. We had the call for our other family members who was on hospice, they were having their last bit of lucidity and the doctors said it would likely happen in the next 30 min to hour. They didn’t make it in time and ended up quitting music all together. Some people will value that closure and moment for their process to move on over something you can have another chance to do, even if you have to get help to do it. A test or audition can happen again, your final good byes can’t.
I just hate bullies making her feel worse is horrible. She tryna do better with her life but still worried. Her being there is not gonna change his outcome. Ik it hurts but ppl deal with grief differently.
That’s when the teacher should’ve said “I’ll keep the phone on my desk, just let me know what the contact number is, so I can tell you if they call.” That’s it. Solution found.
That was my thought too, why couldn’t the teacher just keep an eye her phone for her and let her know if she needed to leave ASAP? Humans can be such A-Holes. No empathy whatsoever.
@@KageYureii-yg4wp if the situation was that dire the student should have stayed home and retook the test at a later date teachers aren't paid enough for this type of policing it's the SATs rules are rules
@@KageYureii-yg4wp The accommodation wasn’t due to her disability, but rather a family situation, not really a violation under those guidelines. Regardless, the teacher should’ve acted with basic human empathy.
At my school distract, during a SAT no cell phones were permitted to be used by either students or the teachers. I'm not sure if that's a policy with everybody, but that's the policy of our districts. I believe one of the teachers mentioned to me once that if you do bring a cellphone and it's not off and it rings, it will be considered cheating, or the have to report it so it's better not to bring a cell with you.😮
Ikr. I havnt watched this. But she's brain dead right? So what was she gonna do? Black haired girl wanna acts mightier than thou when she clearly really wanted to be there
Nobody is saying that it will heal them magically, but it helps to have people who care about you there for support and also if one of my family members were on their deathbed, I would drop everything to be there to tell them goodbye. Loss doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
Being unable to respond unconscious and all doesnt mean you are 100% unaware, (even if you dont remember after, were unaware) Having people around you legit help (You can see it in the monitored response and all, esp brainwaves)
Though, for scolarity, exams and all, I know i wouldnt be angry, Its more reassuring the person still tried their best for themselves than feeling guilty they didnt because of yourself
Its not about being able to heal them by being there, its more so about being able to respond immediately whenever something happens to the patient. On top of that, its reassuring for the family to be able to see the status of their loved one with their own eyes. They'll be less stressed and worried if they're in the same room or place as the patient
For context, the brunette is Bay, and to her, she doesn’t put much value into the SAT because she wants to go to art school, while Daphne, the ginger, wants to become a doctor. In this I feel for both of them because they had both finally reconnected with their father and bonded with him, even forgiven him, and he gets into a car accident due to an aneurysm. Loved Switched at Birth 😢
This will forever be one of my favorite shows. They are all phenomenal actors and this was the hardest season to watch due to how sad it was but they all did amazing!! The show is called switched at birth. It’s so crazy that people haven’t heard of it I love it😭
Same. I watched this when I was just a teen and it was so amazing. It's been over 5 years since I've watched it. I literally binged every single episode.
You're absolutely right. It’s one thing to not allow the phone to be kept on the desk during the test, but ignoring the call-especially knowing the situation-goes beyond just being impersonal; it feels downright insensitive. The proctor had a responsibility to be aware of the accommodations and how important that call was, and by not responding to it or offering some kind of alternative solution, they really failed to show basic empathy. Situations like this really highlight how much attention and care are needed when supporting people with different needs. It’s not just about following rules but also about understanding the bigger picture and being human about it. It’s no wonder that left you feeling so upset.
I don't know if you have taken the SAT's or how long it's been but if there is a phone that goes off it means everyone present must retake the test unless its a medical device. My teachers told me that the law prohibits them from allowing something like that, we had to give all our phones to the teacher and the phones had to be off. In a regular test the teacher may have made the exception but during a test like that you either follow to rules or don't take the test. They have retakes
@@Fantasy101-i3kso the proctor could have said "I'll hold on to your phone, and let you know if the hospital calls". Compromise. And the relative in the hospital almost made me Dislike the whole video 😅 Like, how are you gonna dismiss her whole life plan, then ask her to read lips for you? 🤦🏿♀️
SAT tests are VERY strict with phones. Even if your alarm goes off while your phone is in your pocket, you'll be asked to leave. The teacher had to do that but she was very rude while doing it. There's a way to talk to people and thats not it. Also, the sister sucked for saying that to Daphne. Girl was already stressed lol
she’s disabled so there are accommodations for that, the teacher easily could have said she’d keep the phone and let her know if she gets a call or text.
and it’s not just the person whose phone it is that gets in trouble. the year before one of my previous teachers “retired” (which has practically an anthology of stories behind why she should’ve actually been fired), she was proctoring the act and not only didn’t silence her phone but took a call during the exam. it got reported, every single student who took their test with her got their scores cancelled, and the school changed the policy so that no student or teacher could have their phone in the building during exams, no exceptions- which as someone who didn’t have a car at the time and couldn’t drive, made finding a ride home after the exam needlessly complicated because buses didn’t run on exam days and i had no way of telling anyone i needed to be picked up
@@honkwavesact/sat are even stricter than that. there are no accommodations for it that allow for any devices that connect to internet or can send messages in any circumstance. and the teacher wouldn’t be able to know if she got a call or text because the phone has to be completely turned off, not just silenced

Tragedies do not happen in a vacuum. When we were losing my mother I was at her side, praying, crying, and listening to medical notes for an exam the day after. While my dad, brothers and I were breaking down and mourning I took the exam because me failing is the last thing whe would want
When I was losing my grandma and younger cousins, I also had to keep working and going to college as well as being the emotional support for my mom (she was losing her mom and best friend). It was extremely stressful, but life still goes on unfortunately
Correct! My mum passed away just 2 days after New Year's and I had to take my finals in 2 weeks. It took a toll on my mental health and I couldn't revise well but I'm so lucky that all of my professors understood and one even made me pass my exam without actually taking the test because she's also a mother and she could see I was struggling to concentrate
I’ve been watching it since like 2013 and have never finished it lmao. I get annoyed and quit then restart it years later & end up annoyed again 😂 I’m thinking of restarting it now & just powering through lol
@DorothyAdeline Same here. I've never finished it but I love the beginning so much I always rewatch and try to finish. It can get pretty intense emotionally but I'm also just awful about finishing shows. Lol
True but maybe the invigilator could have answered the phone for her considering the situation? I'm an examiner, but not in the US and we would be allowed to do this with the consent of the student sitting the test.
Legally, why not? Give me specific examples or laws. Because you're incorrect. If this was a real situation, the school would have been notified. There is NO reason the school couldn't alert her if something happened. You cant have a friggen phone while you're taking the sat. Thats common sense
During normal exams, sure. If provided with proof, yes. The student can have the phone. (They do this in college too). However, during major test such as ACTs, Benchmarks, SATs, basically any state test it is not allowed whatsoever. If the situation does occur, what you have to do is one of these options - Provide a note to the school and the hospital/doctors office so that they both remain in contact in case of an emergency. You will NOT be giving any medical information. Just a note to the school with a vague description of what's going on and a note to the hospital with the school's phone number or teacher's cellphone / teacher's landline (the one the school provides for cases like these and other situations) - This one is tricky, but with permission can be done. Basically you sign a waiver for the teacher to have access to your phone during the test (no pass code, just the ability to answer the phone) in case of an emergency. Those are the only 2 options. If the school is not notified with documents of what is going on, the school has the right to deny requests. Why? Because there are students who lie about emergencies to have their phones during tests to cheat. So because the bad eggs did something, it ruins it for everyone like this case up here. Edit: So you can't blame the teacher or the school. They are doing what they are supposed to do. The student didn't provide the information to complete their request. Therefore, if the teacher allowed this and a monitor saw the phone during the SAT, no matter the situation the teacher would be suspended or worse, fired, and the student would get an automatic 0 no retake unless they pay for it later.
you have to pay a good bit of money for an SAT unless you have a fee waiver and usually it’s scheduled a month or two in advance. I’m pretty sure theres also a rescheduling fee if you miss it. Not to mention it’s a good thing to take for college and stuff and in some schools mandatory to take at least once. It’s really sad she got treated like that because of her test :/
Just bc hes in the hospital doesnt mean everyones lives stop. After hes better or whatever happens, she still has to finish school, grow up, have a life. What wld her just sitting around the hospital accomplish?
It accomplishes being there for someone, my brother just got out of a coma. He’s doing terrible. He was crushed crushed by a car almost killing himself. He could still hear us and we needed to tell him that we loved him. That’s what that accomplishes.
No offense, but people have different lives. I almost killed myself because my brother so don’t say that it doesn’t accomplish anything because it does

Literally every teacher I know will hold the phone and then let them answer the phone call if it’s an important call. Your teacher is never more important than your family and any teacher with a brain would know that
I’ve spent half my life at this point in hospitals and I can promise half the time family being there hurts more than it helps. SATs are her future. If I was in that bed I would have told her to go take the test myself.

I was part of a school performance in Ur 7. My nan was ill and in hospital at the time. It was a late final practice after school when around 5pm my phone rung. I grabbed it knowing that it could be about my nan. My teacher snatched the phone and said I could have it back soon. I explained my nan is seriously ill but she didn't care. I snatched my phone back and read the message.....I had to go say goodbye. I told my teacher that I needed to leave asap and she told me nothing is more important than this performance and I can wait or get detention. I explained but she refused to listen blocking the door. Eventually my step mum walked into the school to see why I was taking so long, she screamed at the teacher before we left for the hospital.....it was to late and my nan was gone. All because of a teacher thinking a year 7 performance was soooo much more important. I hate teachers like that
If someone treated my bonus kiddo this way I'd lose my mind on that teacher before and after, too. That teacher needed an ego check. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
The instructor could’ve answered the phone and alerted the young lady if she was needed. Her loved one didn’t need her at that time, he was at the best place possible. I do get family want to be close by, but don’t take frustrations out on others.
The teacher did not alert her, and she had to be the one to grab the phone against "the rule." He may have been in the best place, but the text that was sent was saying something was wrong.... what she was worried about in the first place. What she just read on the doctor's lips was that her dad was brain dead. Dumb
@@veronicahanlon6477 If your loved one went unconscious and there is a serious problem, you would want your phone as well. She was nice to the teacher. Jeez
Which is great unfortunately these state exams don’t lend to that. The best thing would’ve been acknowledging she’s not in the mindset and rescheduling. Also were it real that phone would’ve been turned off to prevent disruptive behavior.
@alicewolfess971 no, it doesn't. But unfortunately, we can't always read tone or sarcasm online. Some people who don't want to commit to a new show will believe whatever someone tells them
@amayesan it's not about tone... he typed something that the injured person would say, not the doctor. Why would the doctor say "iI will pull theough"?
I can only imagine how deeply that experience still affects you. It's incredibly tough when something so important is taken out of your hands, and even harder when you feel like you're being denied the chance to say goodbye or be there for someone you love. The emotional toll of that situation is something no one should ever have to go through, and it’s completely understandable that talking about it brings up so many emotions. If you ever need to share more or just express how you're feeling, I’m here to listen. Take all the time you need.
I can understand why you feel that way. The girl was clearly in a difficult situation, trying to balance family responsibility with her future. It seems like she made the best decision for herself given the circumstances. Her father’s condition likely made it so she couldn’t provide support in the way she’d want to be at the hospital, especially if he was in a medically induced coma. Meanwhile, the SAT or ACT is such a critical part of her future, and it’s not just a test-it has significant long-term consequences for college, scholarships, and financial aid. The teacher, on the other hand, had a responsibility to respect the situation, but the rigid policies sometimes leave little room for empathy or flexibility, especially in the case of standardized testing. It’s hard when the system doesn’t seem to account for real-world emotional realities. In the end, the girl was doing what she could under difficult circumstances, and I can see why you think she was right. It’s a complex situation where both perspectives are understandable, but in this case, her needs were more urgent.
1) the SATs for a long time, were make or break for anyone on the east coast who wanted to attend college. 2) it is illegal, in the extreme, to take the phone from someone during the test if they have a legitimate need for it, such as a family emergency or health issue, and in her case, one could argue as an aid for her disability.
Show name: Switched at birth I love this show I love to watching it I loved finishing it I've been looking for it everywhere to re-watch it I'm going to keep looking for it
I understand why she'd be upset but honestly life doesn't stop if someone gets hurt. If I was in a life threatening state I would still want my loved one to take the SAT/ACT so they could get into the school they wanted to, your future is still important even if someone you love is in critical condition.
its not given she was taking an SAT, its one of the most important tests ever because it really determines where you will and wont go to school. Teachers during this cannot just rely on the fact that students wont cheat and lie.
@@KageYureii-yg4wp the phone was there, it wasnt restricted from her either. Also she gave her reason which was that it was because a family member was in the hospital, not because she needed it for her own needs. just being there for someone already at the hospital with doctors around them 24/7 wont make much of a difference. Also in case of an emergency its also a rule to contact the school about it first to issue the release of a student, not call your kids phone (which is usually is not allowed to be taken out during class) and just leave without telling any teacher or staff.
also, her being deaf isnt something that requires her to have a phone during tests. Her health wouldnt be affected if she did or didnt have her phone on her. Also in case of an emergency, the teacher is right there. They are trained for emergencies like those, and other people would be the ones calling 911.
@yaitsnotme7472 It was restricted. When she grabbed it, the teacher got upset and said she was done. The teacher saw it flashing on the desk and was not going to alert her. Her dad had a serious problem, and she sees he is brain dead when she gets there. Pretty sure that is important.
@ she asked her to put it away, and she didnt. thats why she said “im done.” Also the girl said that they were in the hospital, the teacher wasnt going to know that he was brain dead.
I don’t know much about SAT since I took the ACT but for the ACT you have to pay quiet a bit to take the test (unless it is the required one) and it is very important for any AP or college level classes you want to take in high school. Also it is very important for financial aid and scholarships for college. I get if it was a normal exam but it isn’t. Also all she would be doing in the hospital would be sitting there while her dad gets tests done. Being with people while they are in the hospital is important but since he had an aneurysm, he is most likely in a medically induced coma and can’t interact with her. I get her completely for going to the test.
SAT is pretty much the same as the ACT. I’ve taken both. The SAT used to be a lot more popular and you could take either, but more people prefer the ACT now and it’s become the state mandated test.
You bring up a great point about the significance of tests like the ACT, especially when it comes to things like college admission, financial aid, and scholarships. It's not just a regular exam-it can impact a lot of future opportunities. In situations where the student has a valid reason for needing to take the test (like a family emergency), it's understandable that they would prioritize the exam, especially if being at the hospital wouldn’t allow them to be of much help to their family member, who may not even be conscious or responsive. In cases like this, it really comes down to balancing the emotional need to be with family and the practical necessity of taking the test for your future. It's a tough choice, but your perspective is valid-attending the test in such a situation makes sense. Would you have thought the same if the test had been something like a final exam at school, or do you think it’s different when it’s tied to your future?
Spouse of a teacher here, there are sat makup dates and if they know you have a circumstance like this they will insist on you not taking the test that day. Its an aptitude test and if you are not in a good state of mind then all youve done is hurt yourself. My spouse had a student with a similar scenario. She insisted on him not taking the test that day and he was able to be at the hospital when things took a turn, and he was able to say goodbye.
The girl acts like if the whole family tree is in the hospital it’s gonna make the patient get better faster. That’s not her fault, she came as quick as she could to the hospital. If anything it’s the teachers fault for taking her phone, bc last time I checked when taking the SAT it’s okay for people that are deaf to have their phones for emergency purposes. Her calling it a “stupid test”, and being mad at her for not being there was uncalled for, I don’t understand where she’s coming from.
Grief and fear are funny that way. You feel like the whole world should stop, but it doesn't. She's angry and scared and lashing out. That doesn't make it right, but it is a little understandable
You’re absolutely right-it’s not the girl's fault for wanting to be there for her family, and she did the best she could by arriving at the hospital as quickly as possible. The idea that having more people in the hospital room would somehow speed up recovery doesn't make sense, especially when the person you're supporting still needs space to heal and the focus should be on their well-being. As for the teacher, that’s a huge oversight. If accommodations were made for her to have her phone in case of an emergency, the teacher should have respected that, especially considering the situation. It's clear that her frustration with the “stupid test” came from emotional overwhelm and fear, but that shouldn’t have been directed at someone who was just doing their best under a stressful situation. I can totally understand why you’d feel confused and upset by the teacher's actions. It sounds like the teacher missed the bigger picture and failed to handle the situation with empathy. The whole thing seems like a series of misunderstandings that led to unnecessary stress for everyone involved.
Life doesn't stop for anyone. It hurts when a loved one is in trouble but each life is individual. Making something going somewhere or being alone doesn't make you bad, life goes on and the only life that should we care is ourselves as long as we don't hurt other people

She was trying to prepare her future while he was having surgery to try to ensure he had any future.... there is nothing she could have done at the hospital other than worry, and she got to the hospital before either of them even found out about the surgery results... just bc she wasn't sitting in a waiting room on location doesn't mean she wasn't stressed out about the surgery all the same.
Switched At Birth, one of my top fav shows of all time!! Paragraph time! Daphne, the red head, is deaf. She got very sick when she was a baby and lost her hearing. Bay, the darker haired girl, and Daphne were switched as babies and found out bc Bay took a blood test at school and the blood types didnt match. (SPOILERS ahead) Fast forward many seasons, Bay meets Angelo, her bio dad. He gets into a serious car accident. Daphne read the Dr's lips that basically told her that Angelo was brain dead. After much agony, they decided to pull the plug on the machines and they donated his organs. It's a beautiful show and I've become obsessed with ASL and this show helped me learn more and more. The actors are phenomenal 👏🏻 highly suggest u go watch it if u have any interest in it!! ❤
Hey guys. Everyone in this scene is just doing their best. Daphne knew how important that exam was to her and she tried so hard to make it through. Bae calling it a stupid test makes sense because she’s never been interested in school so she doesn’t see the importance. Sure lashing out isn’t the best but she’s a teenager and their dad is in the hospital with a traumatic brain injury. You’ll never understand the situation until you’re in it. Don’t judge how others grieve
This. After reading all the comments, I became deflated. You worded what I was thinking perfectly. Thank you. Sometimes understanding where somebody else is coming from even if we don't understand why makes all the difference. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
In our schools we do allow students to take emergency calls because they might me very important but you must turn in your papers when you take the call. After you take the call they give the papers back
The other girl didnt understand what the student was going through the important test. Yet the student tried her best to get over her test. Now this raised my blood pressure 💔😖
I completely agree. Family absolutely comes first, especially in a crisis. No test, no matter how important, should ever take precedence over being there for loved ones when they need you most. The emotional weight of that kind of situation can’t be underestimated, and it’s difficult to focus on anything else when your family’s well-being is at stake. In an ideal world, there would be more understanding and flexibility in moments like these, where family emergencies are recognized, and accommodations are made to ensure people don’t have to choose between their future and being there for those they love. It’s moments like these that highlight how important it is to balance empathy with rules. How do you think that situation could have been handled differently to allow for both family support and fairness in the testing process?
Yes, absolutely. But she wasn't wrong to go do her test when she had a little time, it's not like she's the one treating the patient directly and her siblings were there to help too, so she wasn't wrong at all
actually, a phone going off during an ACT or SAT test invalidates all tests for everyone in the room. So, in this situation, the test would actually have been terminated the second her phone went off. They have all students completely silent their phones.
Yep I don't understand why schools just listen to these rules just don't listen If the college board is not coming there to investigate every single fucking person
My mom kept calling me for an emergency during my SATs. Our phones were with the teacher, my particular one knows me and my mom well and called me up quietly asking permission to look at my phone. I said yes and I were able to respond without me picking up the phone, seeing it or touching it. I did well on the test and we broke no rules. I dont understand why there wasnt more communication. The teacher couldve went that extra mile to ask permission prior and be the mediator
If it were up to me, if I could make the rules for the SATs, I'd make it so the family contacts the teacher to inform the person taking the test. Still following the no-phones rule, but also making sure communication is still available.
1. Skip the SATs if something that serious is going on 2. If you want a teacher to believe you say the words brain aneurysm instead of a vauge "hospital emergency" 3. The teacher sinply would keep an eye on the phone for her during the exam. Shes a teacher, not the devil Drama show has to drama but they really forget how to people
Some tests are also just very difficult to retake. They definitely can’t let you have your phone. In my country if your phone is even in the same room you are failed immediately. Getting out your seat to pick up a pencil fails you too
This isnt just any test, its the SATs, they have much stricter rules than regular school tests which is why the teacher could not be lenient. If a student has a disability, they must contact the College Board (who administer the tests) for prior approval and accommodation before the test, not the day of. The test can be rescheduled at times depending on circumstances.
SATs are a joke- honestly? They don’t fucking dictate a damn thing. Do You know what they are meant for? Determining the effectiveness of Heck the ACTs make more sense! Those actually go to your college record- You take the appropriate SATs in late elementary and middle school! Besides, accommodations like that legally have to be followed. You don’t? It’s a lawsuit. Families have sued and won. Wanna know why? It’s an abusive power trip and an ADA violation. I should know- while i didn’t have it on me, my phone was required to be in the room and on for panic and anxiety disorders so they could let my mom know. I also had extended time for adhd, AND had a mandated time to leave for medication. I had those followed. This is not difficult- I have a feeling you are still in school, or a teacher. Let me tell you with confidence that the SATs have never ONCE impacted my life. Sorry to disappoint

The teacher should’ve suggested to take the call when it came in🤨and if the student declined, she would still take her phone because of the “rules”…a better option would’ve been given🤷🏽♂️
If the student uses their phone at all their test is thrown out. If the device goes off in a room full of students, all of the students’ exams are technically supposed to be thrown out as well. Whether the school paid for the test or students paid individually, since some people take the SAT outside of their mandated year or date, it affects the other students. Rescheduling her personal exam for a different test day would make the most sense, but it costs money and it may be the last one of the year, so she would have to delay her college applications for a while
@@evynphillipswhy is that the policy though for one student's phone to go off they void everyone's exam? That is the stupidest thing. My brother has an insulin pump in the school was trying to not allow it during a standardized test for the same reason. How is this okay?
@@evynphillips Because things like bad weather, emergencies, etc. Don't happen..the college board needs to be more realistic. We had a fire alarm during an AP exam when I was in high school and the college board told them that it did not constitute voiding everyone's exam. I think that's the worst case scenario.
It’s the SAT. It’s not a normal exam or an “A+”. It’s the mandated exam that people use to apply to colleges. As soon as her phone goes off, everyone’s test is supposed to be thrown out, which means they’ve all wasted their time studying and prepping for the exam that determines whether they get into college, and they would have to reschedule on their own time, potentially paying for themselves the next time they try to take it instead of doing it through the school for free
I xan totally relate to this. My mom had had been in the hospital for two months, snd they were prepping her for another surgery on the same day as my final to get one of my certifications. My dad and my sister were like, you aren't performing the surgery, and only two of us can be down in surgical ICU. Stay in here and take the test...there were no makeups allowed. I broke my tablet, and didn't even have a way to take it anymore. A coworker loaned me his iPad, and I took my test. I passed. My graduation happened on the day of my mom's last surgery, a brain surgery. So, I obviously didn't attend that. My case study partner took a picture of my name as it scanned across the main screen, and sent it to me. It was so sweet, and two months later, my mom was thrilled to see it.
@@KageYureii-yg4wp a phone for a deaf student to contact family is no different than a phone for a hearing student to contact family. The fact that her ears don't work doesn't right her to a phone during an SAT lol
Being that phones aren’t allowed and it’s the SAT I would just reschedule, as soon as i saw there would be no exceptions, you walk out! That lets ppl know you’re not playing! And the girl at the hospital chill TF out!
I've administered the SATs many times. For context, it's run by the college board not the schools. Everything is super strict. The students in this room are too close together. The phone ringing is a huge violation. The test doesn't require listening so no modifications needed. You have to apply to the College Board for special accommodations and most requests are denied. Not following one rule could cause the whole class could have their scores invalidated. If it's more serious the whole testing group at that location can be invalidated.
@the_great_brendonion a student can file a complaint if they feel the testing was tainted in any way. Also, they do occasionally audit our SATs, and that's random.

context: this show is called switched at birth. the ginger hair girl, daphne, is deaf and that’s why they use sign language. daphnes father got in a car accident the night prior (because of a brain aneurism rupting) and daphne needed to take the SATs.

You could’ve rescheduled it. Or skipped and repaid and taken it at a later date.

So true. We are caretakers but at some point we also have to feel alive and try to live
Retaking SATs literally only cost $60
I just hate bullies making her feel worse is horrible. She tryna do better with her life but still worried. Her being there is not gonna change his outcome. Ik it hurts but ppl deal with grief differently.
That’s when the teacher should’ve said “I’ll keep the phone on my desk, just let me know what the contact number is, so I can tell you if they call.” That’s it. Solution found.

Its more reassuring the person still tried their best for themselves than feeling guilty they didnt because of yourself
Its not about being able to heal them by being there, its more so about being able to respond immediately whenever something happens to the patient.
On top of that, its reassuring for the family to be able to see the status of their loved one with their own eyes. They'll be less stressed and worried if they're in the same room or place as the patient

During normal exams, sure. If provided with proof, yes. The student can have the phone. (They do this in college too). However, during major test such as ACTs, Benchmarks, SATs, basically any state test it is not allowed whatsoever. If the situation does occur, what you have to do is one of these options
- Provide a note to the school and the hospital/doctors office so that they both remain in contact in case of an emergency. You will NOT be giving any medical information. Just a note to the school with a vague description of what's going on and a note to the hospital with the school's phone number or teacher's cellphone / teacher's landline (the one the school provides for cases like these and other situations)
- This one is tricky, but with permission can be done.

Both people are wrong. The girl is right.
Yes thank you!
agree,,Human being is the highest rule in the world
I can understand why you feel that way.

This thing about our world that rules are rules is absolutely idiotic
its not given she was taking an SAT, its one of the most important tests ever because it really determines where you will and wont go to school.
I Hate Teachers that do that bro even if it’s something really important 😣
Spouse of a teacher here, there are sat makup dates and if they know you have a circumstance like this they will insist on you not taking the test that day.
Its an aptitude test and if you are not in a good state of mind then all youve done is hurt yourself.
My spouse had a student with a similar scenario. She insisted on him not taking the test that day and he was able to be at the hospital when things took a turn, and he was able to say goodbye.
I’m deaf and I know asl and I can feel her pain..
The whole thing seems like a series of misunderstandings that led to unnecessary stress for everyone involved.

that sounds fair, i like that
The other girl didnt understand what the student was going through the important test. Yet the student tried her best to get over her test. Now this raised my blood pressure 💔😖
Forget the teacher, family comes first before a test 😢
You are a hero for sharing your abuse. I hope your sharing helps other children acknowledge and heal from their abuse.
Me gusta que las señas las hacen pausadamente
If it were up to me, if I could make the rules for the SATs, I'd make it so the family contacts the teacher to inform the person taking the test. Still following the no-phones rule, but also making sure communication is still available.

@ it’s to make sure no students are using their phone in any way to cheat, and because any disruption to the test makes the test invalid.
@@evynphillips Because things like bad weather, emergencies, etc. Don't happen..the college board needs to be more realistic. We had a fire alarm during an AP exam when I was in high school and the college board told them that it did not constitute voiding everyone's exam. I think that's the worst case scenario.
I dont agree with the teacher.. HUMAN BEING is the Highest rule in this world..A+ YOUR RESULT BUT you RUIN YOUR FAMILY..WHAT FOR ????

As if everyone has to listen to them it's not like they come in watch everyone take the exam.. schools are too afraid of nothing
@the_great_brendonion a student can file a complaint if they feel the testing was tainted in any way. Also, they do occasionally audit our SATs, and that's random.
