- In BarDown's newest edition of Game Capsule, DZ & Corwin throw it back to the PS2 days to play what may be one of the poorest rated hockey gaming series of all-time…NHL FaceOff! But is the game actually all that bad, or did it just get overshadowed in a crowded marketplace?

I remember I won this game as part of a trivia contest held by a kids hockey magazine called Powerplay. I played one period, then let my friend borrow it, and I never bothered to ask for it back. The only thing I remember is that I scored two goals and the commentator said exactly the same thing both times ("he cuts in, does a little dipsy doodle, and puts it away top shelf!...he cuts in, does a little dipsy doodle, and puts it away top shelf!")

There's actually an interesting reference in MLB The Show (which is still made by San Diego Studio). When your player first gets an agent in Road to the Show, they come from an agency called 989 Sports. A nice little callback to the company's roots there

It seems like they were a few years behind in physics, graphics, and general tech. This looks a lot like NHL ‘98 to me lol
I’d also like to point out that in the Anaheim/Boston game, it appears to be in an Arena modeled after the Brendan Byrne/Continental Airlines Arena/Izod center.

You guys should play NHL Faceoff 2001. By far my favorite nhl game for an arcade style game. the gameplay is so fast, the checks rock people and pucks fly around like crazy, super fun to play
edit: the intro music and video for nhl faceoff 2001 is burned into my brain for how awesome it is

I remember I had the Athens 2004 Olympics game which was made by 989 sports. Some of the events were fun but a lot of them didn’t work at all. I can definitely see why they folded

You have two options for the next game you play. For the sake of variety, it SHOULD be NHL 2k6 because it had enforcers, but more importantly, intimidation! Players would literally get intimidated if you hit them too much (plus you could tell the ai to target a specific player with hits).
The other option is NHL 2k2 for Dreamcast. The last North American Dreamcast game and a weird mid season February release.
How are you playing NHL 2000 online?
You guys should play NHL Slapshot for the Wii if you can for the next video. It's actually really good despite being the only NHL title to use motion controls as far as I know
Nhl 2k11 on wii uses some motion controls. Mostly just "shake this for this move".
