4 reasons to use the straight bar: - It's the only thing every gym has - It's the only thing every gym has - It's the only thing every gym has - It's the only thing every gym has
My gym just got one. And I squated for the first time in 23 year, because of knee problems and I rep'd 200 lbs my first day. I'm super excited about this. This bar is the bomb
It’s the only thing I use for back squats (bad shoulder from birth not lifting) and since I don’t compete it doesn’t really matter to me if it transfers to the “regular squat”. It allows me to lift heavy with no pain and let’s me concentrate on building my quads without the risk to my bad shoulder. I actually had a guy build me a front squat bar too so I can do front squats pain free as well.
As a beginner I was always super afraid to attempt the barbell squat BUT after starting with the SSB it has been a game changer!! I feel much more confident in the movement and am able to go deeper in my squat without feeling unstable. I also can lift heavier and there is no discomfort in my shoulders.
Great video Scott. The question of ditching the traditional barbell for squats really depends on your individual goals. For powerlifting, obviously you hav to use a regular bar at meets. However, the SSB is a great variation or accessory movement to train, especially when you’re feeling beat up. Many powerlifters will use the SSB up until 2-3 weeks prior to a meet, and find they have made gains in the regular squat and deadlift because of the benefits you’ve mentioned. For those that are competing in strongman, the SSB can and should replace the normal bar as the movement more closely mimics several strongman lifts, with the weight being in front you. I’ve been using the SSB in my home gym for two years now, and at age 53 and three shoulder surgeries, this thing is amazing! Never tried the Gronk version, but I’ve used both the Titan SSB v2 and the SS Yoke from Elite FTS.
Anabolic Aliens. Hi friends! Thank you for your channel. I am traveling to beijing in a few days and taking all your home workouts with me. Keep on inspiring people as you always do.
I love this bar! So versatile. After a couple sets of normal squats with this thing I do a couple sets of Hatfield squats (those rock!). This bar, the Duffalo bar and hex bar are easily my favorite bars ever.
I wish I'd taken this advice years ago and used a safety bar to squat. I injured my lower back during a squat (lower portion of the movement)and it's never been right since. If you are tall like me then it's even more important. I've been doing a goblet squat for a while and it feels much more safe and upright. I would like to try one of these bars to see how it feels.
I did traditional barbell back squats 3x per week consistently for 10+ years. I never had any issues with my knees, lower back, hips, or mobility. But what did me in eventually was bicep tendonitis. The pain got so bad I couldn't even lift my arm. We're talking blinding, searing, vomit inducing pain. Even then I still wanted to tough it out. But it got so bad I couldn't do any other lifting. So the SSB wound up being a god send. It's the only bar I squat with now. When I have tried to return to traditional back squats, the tendonitis flares up every 4-6 weeks.
OMG! Hilarious disclaimer! I used to squat exclusively low-bar style. After years of this, I felt my shoulders were becoming my weak link and the limiting factor for adding weight to the bar. The SS bar completely eliminated my shoulder pain from squatting. I only squat with the SS bar now and I have almost forgotten that I used to have that nagging shoulder pain. Another great video. Thanks!
You could see right away that your butt wasn't tucking under at the bottom of your squat using the safety bahh. Thanks for sharing this, Scott. I didn't even know such a thing existed. I'll definitely be investing in one of these.
Great video, Scott, Might as well discuss using the trap bar for dead-lifts since it's becoming a LOT more popular with NBA, NFL and other professional athletes. Of course, the "purists" like Rippetoe will never endorse using a trap bar but like anything new it takes time to convince people that it "may" have some benefit (even if that benefit is only keeping newer lifters safer!)
Hey Scott i already use this bar for squatting and cant recomend it enough. Ive had 2 back injuries in past 15 yrs, one from heavy deadlifts and one from an accident outside gym and thought my squatting days were over as well as deadlifts. I can now squat painfree. awesome Also I learned i can deadlift again using a trap/shrug bar, which is also awesome. MY CONCERN HERE IS; you are not demonstrating very good squat form even with the safety aspect of this bar. Noone especially not a trainer should ever descend into a squat, especially a deep one in 1 second. That is uncontrolled and asking for trouble as you will also be bouncing out of the bottom position not using brute horse power to lift. Its much safer and doing more actual work and using more power and energy to lower the weight under complete control, hit bottom, pause , then power out of the hole!
I really like goblet squats, and this reminds me of them. I'm going to start doing these to get around the issues with the goblet squat (such as limit on how much you can hold in front of you in that goblet position comfortably).
ScottHermanFitness thanks for the link, I've been considering getting one of these because of a messed up shoulder but others (rogue especially) are too expensive for me at the moment. with this discount code the grunk safety squat bar is really affordable and now I can add this bar to my home gym a lot sooner than expected. I used to take pride in having strong legs but since I messed my shoulder up I haven't done them in awhile and it was driving me crazy. Can't wait to barely be able to get off the toilet again on leg day, thanks bro....
zerchers and SSB... the future for those of the glass back...! Good informative video on the SSB Scott. This is currently on my list for the home rig. As a stop gap, I currently do Zercher squats and find that they've taken a lot of strain from my low back. Zerchers are an excellent movement, I was converted to them after my 1st session. So much carry over to other exercises..
Scott, here's an interesting problem I've been having. I've been doing barbell and safety bar squats (front and back) for quite awhile and use about 150 lbs. and also leg extensions/curls, too. Yet, I've noticed when I go up the stairs that it is still an effort (I'm 74). It's as if squats don't help in the real world. I have the same weakness when trying to run up hills. And I do hip thrusters for the glutes, too. They are weak. The other day, I tried doing single leg squats with just bodyweight. I need more explosive, springy power for the shotput and discus events and slow squats weren't helping. Man, my legs were shot for a couple days. I also got a better pump in my legs than from the other leg work. I warmed up with two legged squats and gradually moved over to doing partial one legged squats (half squats) and making them into jumping squats. Someday I'll do full squats but for now half squats are good enough for the shot and discus. It's amazing how doing an isolation exercise like single leg squats can affect a limb so differently than the normal two legged squat. I guess it's the same as the difference between barbell curls and dumbbell curls. The barbell equalizes the stress between the two limbs and makes them work in unison. The isolation single limb exercise brings forth all the weaknesses that that limb may have and was being compensated for with the barbell exercise. As my legs get used to the single leg squats, I'll use my (up to) 60 lbs weight vest that I got from Dick's Sporting Goods to increase the resistance. If I get any stronger than that, I'll have to use my hex bar or try the safety bar. Hope this info helps someone.
great video Scott, very informative. The safety squat bar is very awkward for the first few reps, but you can definitely feel the burn in your quads and glutes. I've only used it twice but am considering getting one for home
I've only ever been doing front squats because of my posture. Most gyms are too cheap to invest in new equipment. Mine just doubled its rates to 800$ a year and they don't even have bumper plates or deadlift platforms
Great video Scott. I had shoulder replacement surgery almost 4 years ago. And my 'Squats' have been limited to Bulgarian & Split Squats. This was the bar my trainer had so I could do squats again. I checked out Gronk Fitness & I'm going to ask the manager if I can buy one for the gym. I live in an a apartment. So no space for a home gym.
I struggle so bad with squats and can't hardly do a front squat even after months of mobility training and proper warm ups. Totally would give this a try
Hi Scott! I have started loving leg day because of your suggestions and tips. Great, great as always. Thank you for helping people like me to become better every day. Hugs from Mexico and the best to you and family.
The Straight Truth CROOKED BAR (SSB) vs STRAIGHT BAR: 1. The Straight Bar DEMANDs dedication 2. There are no easy days with it. These are also the reasons why it IS the ONLY bar used in Competitions for Olympic & Powerlifting.
IMHO the only reason to be using a straight bar for DL or squatting is you're a competitive PL or WL. If one is PL for fitness...I'd just stick to using a "trap bar" for DL (..fireman's carry..etc.) and a "safety squat bar" for back squats. Less chance for injury and workout pretty much the same muscle groups.
Tnx Scott for this upload, i have struggled with my lower back for a while and its always sore after squat. Never thought that is was my tight shoulders that was the reason for it. Tnx again, going straight to the gym to try it out!
So is the best answer to not do straight bar or safety bar squats and do a hack squats, leg press and hex bar deadlifts instead to look after your back.
This is TOTALLY ME!!! I made the switch a month ago due to shoulder/hip mobility and LOVE the safety squat bar. I do box squats and regular squats with it while working through MWOD for mobility work 👍. Thanks for the great content! Question: thoughts on using my squat shoes with a safety bar? I like the stability and I already have them from trying to barbell squat. Curious to see what your thoughts are.
It's really a preference thing. Someone people use it, others don't. If they want to change up a bit, they switch back and forth. If there is no downside to the safety barbell and it offers the same benefits than your traditional barbell, then go for it. I will do this on my leg day. One day i will use barbell and next leg day i will use safety barbell, and so on. Who cares what others think. It's about YOUR legs. If safety gets you powerful legs, then so be it.
Scott do you have any plans to go into powerlifting or participate in a meet? I for one would love to see you there. You'd probably be the most aesthetic one there lol
idea for next video... u could say if wearing a belt that weights like 15kg and wearing some other heavy clothes can make u stronger and which muscles does it affect the most? just an idea
Hi Scott , I am deciding between safety bar squats, landmine squats, or box squats to replace my regular squats.. I cannot do regular bar squats properly.. what would you recommend.
Best Video on the Safety squat barbell ever! Thank you brotha!....? Does the Safety squat barbell targets the same muscle (leg) as the regular barbell squat high /low-
Should I have a pendlay, cable, and t bar row in the same day workout (using push pull legs split) and the decline, flat, and reverse grip barbell bench press or should I swap out and only do one variation per day?
The Safety Squat Bah seems perfect especially if it has the same benefits as the straight bah for your legs, I'll have to save some $$ tho it's over 200$ lol Question regarding the Deadlift, If the bahbell is only 2-3 inches below your knee caps is that too high?
Actually the depth of your deadlift should be determined by the ability of your hamstring to lengthen when going forward without rounding your lower back. That is an individual issue. Many people do not have flexible enough hamstrings to go further down than a couple inches below the kneecap without rounding the lower back. If that is the limit of their range of motion using good form, then they should not attempt to go beyond that range without increasing their hamstring flexibility.
First, I'm guessing that you're NOT from Alabama. Second, for such a young man you are extremely knowledgeable. Everything you say has been shown to be true by my experience. I'm 74 years old and have a lot of difficulty going to a low position on my squats with a straight bar. Sometimes, when warmed up a lot, I can do it but I can still feel it in my lower back. But, with my cheapie Safety Squat bar, I can hit rock bottom with no stress on anything except my quads. Plus, I get to use my hands to hold onto the power rack for balance and to give a "little" pull to get me up when needed. I notice your Safety Squat bar has a BIG gap between the two little bars. Another video complains about that and how women can't use it. On my cheapie bar which I can't find the name but I bought it through Amazon, the distance between the two little bars is 12" - 13" center to center. Between the padding is about 9". So, it fits around my head and neck snugly and doesn't feel like it is going to slip off my shoulders.
I bought it through Amazon for $ 314.95 back in Feb, 2017. It is an Ader Safety Squat Olympic Bar and is rated at 1500 lbs. It is sold by Fitness Outlet through Amazon. Now that I look at my order, maybe my bar wasn't such a "cheapie" bar after all. I just did a Google search for safety squat bars and I see Walmart has a Titan version for $ 159 and other dealers have prices going all the way up to $ 400. I guess my bar is about in the middle. Just check the dimensions for the bar you're interested in and make sure it will fit you well.
If we don't have access to a safety squat bar, do you think a dumbbell goblet squat would have similar benefits to squatting with a safety bar? Particularly the benefits you mentioned in the third tip about fixing squat posture.
If you are doing squats with this bar and you need to bail out, is it safe to drop this bar when using bumper plates?. Or is there a risk to drop bar on those handles?

scott's neck veins make me nervous.
I tried it today it was awesome, all the tension was on muscles worked , little strain on joints . Very good exercise.

For a video about ditching the bahhbell, there's not enough bahhbell mentions for me
Great! And it looks like it won't leave nasty-looking welts on my shoulders (look worse than they are though).
+thruthebook that is a plus as well!! Haha
Scott do you have any plans to go into powerlifting or participate in a meet? I for one would love to see you there. You'd probably be the most aesthetic one there lol
Will it stop my back from leaning forward
Wow, that was helpful, quite helpful
I see you southie!
idea for next video...
u could say if wearing a belt that weights like 15kg and wearing some other heavy clothes can make u stronger and which muscles does it affect the most?
just an idea
Hi Scott , I am deciding between safety bar squats, landmine squats, or box squats to replace my regular squats.. I cannot do regular bar squats properly.. what would you recommend.
Great video
What was the name of the bar again?
thanks for information sir
Best Video on the Safety squat barbell ever! Thank you brotha!....? Does the Safety squat barbell targets the same muscle (leg) as the regular barbell squat high /low-
Should I have a pendlay, cable, and t bar row in the same day workout (using push pull legs split) and the decline, flat, and reverse grip barbell bench press or should I swap out and only do one variation per day?
I've always trained with straight bar to hit as many muscles as possible. Should I still switch to safety bar?
The Safety Squat Bah seems perfect especially if it has the same benefits as the straight bah for your legs, I'll have to save some $$ tho it's over 200$ lol
Question regarding the Deadlift, If the bahbell is only 2-3 inches below your knee caps is that too high?
+I'm a life form known as Manuel I have a code for 15% off too.. "mindright-15" www.gronkfitnessproducts.com
+I'm a life form known as Manuel yeah. Tjats more like a rack pull my dude ;)
Titan fitness, $140!
How important is a weight lifting belt ? I just ordered the adipower shoes and those rems for deadlifting.
So, it fits around my head and neck snugly and doesn't feel like it is going to slip off my shoulders.
hi, what is the name of the bar, from where did u buy it?
+Mir D oh definitely.. you just wont be able to go as heavy and eventually the dumvbell can tire out your shoulders from holding it up
@@ScottHermanFitness How about weighted vest + dumbbell.
Scott the ‘safety squat bar’ is like turning up at a party with a bottle of fizzy water.. 😳
If you are doing squats with this bar and you need to bail out, is it safe to drop this bar when using bumper plates?. Or is there a risk to drop bar on those handles?
