  • I ride the London Bus for the first time as a Native New Yorker from Piccadilly Circus. These iconic double decker red buses may look strange, but they're pretty efficient! I also like how they're less expensive than riding the London Underground (Tube).

      As a Londoner I do like how public transport is more eco friendly now thanks to EV. less emissons and for me personally less road noise. I do drive and i do feel the city is more geared to public transport.

    At around 10.34 you are passing the world's first Hard Rock cafe. It's the building on the street corner on the other side of the road. It opened in 1971 and is still there. I went there with my girlfriend at the time on the second day. We had to wait in line on the pavement to be let in when a table became free. It wasn't too expensive and we used to go there quite often after that.

    It's the best way to see London, one tip you missed was the dot-matrix 'Countdown' display on the bus stop, it shows real-time bus tracking and the expected wait times. If the bus is late there is often another one a couple of minutes behind it, using the countdown display you can wait for the second bus and avoid the crush.

  • @richt71
    @richt71 7 месяцев назад +16

    Not sure if you know but as well as letting you take as many buses within an hour, there's also a daily cap just for bus use, which is £5.25. This allows unlimited bus use (london red buses) within greater London from 4:30am till 4:29am next day. The system is clever enough that it will charge you the bus cap (if you hit 3 or more buses in a day) even if you use other transport like tube or dlr as well!

    • @ActionKid
      @ActionKid  7 месяцев назад +7

    For other visitors not used to buses, it's not a great idea to wait until the bus has actually stopped before you get up if you're a long way from the door like upstairs. If there aren't many people getting on and off, it might have left again before you get to the door.
    I wonder how many British people watching were triggered by those (presumably) foreigners not queueing properly in front of you!!

    The arch you said was Marble Arch was actually the Wellington Arch, Marble Arch is the one at the end of Oxford St. I am glad you enjoyed your ride. You can also ride on an old style London Bus, as there is a heritage route that runs, though your oyster is not valid on it, but they do day tickets. You can head to an outer London Tube station and take a TfL bus from there into the countryside, if you want see something different from the normal tourist things.

    Those buses were run, oddly enough, by French and German companies. The 9 to Hammersmith and the 23 to Westbourne Park were operated by London United and RATP Dev, both part of the RATP Group. RATP stands for "Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens" and they do the public transport in Paris (so technically you traveled on a Paris bus in London!). The second number 38 to Victoria was operated by Arriva, which is a British subsidiary of DB - that stands for "Deutsche Bahn", the national railway company of Germany and a state-owned enterprise under the control of the German government.
    It was great to see the newer electric buses on the roads. The model you were on is the Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV, produced by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis in partnership with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD Auto. It has a 320 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack (almost 4 times the size of the battery in a new long-range Tesla Model 3).

    On the bus stop/stand what you may not have noticed is that at the stand there is an indicator board that shows what busses are due and an estimated time to its arrival at that bus stop. There inky a few stands that do not have that display, those that do not usually have a printed timetable which is attached to the pole indicating the stop. The prime position is the front seats on the upper deck where you can see what is coming up, in my opinion.

      Not always necessary, it depends on whether or not you're at a "request stop". You can tell a request stop from a normal stop by the symbol at the top of the bus stop pole. If it's a white roundel (the TfL symbol of a circle with a line through it) on a red background, it's a request stop. But a red roundel on a white background means that buses will stop there without being requested to stop, unless they're too full to take on any more passengers.

      Maybe to distinguish it from the yellow school bus in America.

    Wow not been on a London bus for a few years now, and as an Ex London bus driver is very sad to hear that the only London accent I could hear on that bus is the female announcer for each stop…..and that’s electronically recorded, where are all the Londoners ?????? 😢

      Sussex Gardens is full of hotels, and Piccadilly Circus is a tourist hot spot. Londoners simply don't go there.

      AK seems quite discreet, he films from behind and out of windows also angles the camera downwards when on busy trains.
