Served In Suffering | John

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. - John 19:26-27
This moment is one of great emotion. The beaten, degraded, and crucified Jesus looks down from the Cross and speaks to two people he loves. John and Mary. The instruction is explicit. Mary is to care for John, and John is to care for Mary.
But here's what struck me. Jesus, in his present state of suffering, has enough fortitude to address this matter. It's as if he is more concerned for them than himself, which is true. But Jesus isn't addressing one matter at the moment, but two. First, the matter of human relationships between a mother and "son." Second, the matter of spiritual relationships between man and God.
So when God prompts you today, which I believe he will. Care for the well-being of a brother in your spiritual community. Just do something small and keep it simple. As Jesus illustrates, three to four words make all the difference. And if you are in the middle of suffering and don't have the strength to do this, I would challenge you. Do it anyway, and in some small way, you might know the gravity of caring for others in suffering as Jesus did here.
ASK THIS:
Reflect on a time when you went out of your way to care for someone else, even when it seemed challenging. How did that experience impact your understanding of selfless love and your connection to Jesus's example on the Cross?
In moments of personal suffering or difficulty, have you ever found strength in reaching out to support someone else? How did this shift your perspective on your own challenges and the importance of community in times of suffering?
Who is someone you need to reach out to?
DO THIS: Serve someone even in your suffering.
PRAY THIS: Lord, help me to emulate Jesus' selfless love and care for others, both in the everyday moments and during the trials of life. May I find the strength to reach out and support my spiritual community and be a beacon of your love, just as Jesus was on the Cross. Amen.
