  • Ramgarh Shekhawati, Rajasthan
Ramgarh Shekhawati, Rajasthan is a small town of Sikar District of Rajasthan state.
Ramgarh, which is situated at the vicinity of Shekhawati, was explored in 1791 by Poddars and they made it a stern business centre of India. In 19th century Ramgarh became one of the richest towns of India. The story of Ramgarh's origin is very interesting. It is so because the main leader of Churu had an aversion to see the growing popularity of Poddars as a particular Poddar rose to the great eminence trading in woollen products. Nothing was wrong with that as trade was the main occupation of the Marwaris of Shekhawati. But things became really excruciating when the state funds dried up and the Seth (chieftain) of Churu imposed high tax on the wool trade. This obviously angered the Poddars. So they decided to settle their business elsewhere. They earned a great wealth roaming at the nook and corner of the world and decided to adorn Ramgarh buildings, enchanting Havelies and Cenotaphs(Chattries).
This town is famous for its Fresco paintings, old temples, cenotaphs (Chattries) & mansions (Havelies) built by the Marwari community. These Chattries are particularly famous for Frescos and architecture work. The Sone Ki Dukan, "the gold shop", served as a chamber of commerce. The large families of merchants gathered here to discuss prices and other issues. This small three-room building, built in 1830-1850 by Harkanth Rai Poddar, is located near the Shiva Temple and owes its originality to the abundance of gilding on its wall frescoes. These evoke scenes from the Ramayana (the final battle), the incarnations of Vishnu and moments in Krishna's life. Inside, we discover a magnificent representation of the city of Jaipur as well as religious texts painted with gold leaf. The frescoes are very meticulous and masterful. These are undoubtedly the most beautiful frescoes in Shekhawati.
