First up we chat to the two ladies who created a webseries called Coloured Mentality which documents their preparations to walk 1000km from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town.
Then we’ll be chatting to Megan McCormack, who is a tax lawyer by day and a MMA fighter by night
We also sit down with Buyiselwa Ngqawani, a woman who is not only a single mother, but also a professional firefighter.

Is mos lekker om coloured te wees! I'm not ashamed of it, however, to people talking about coloureds not having to idenfied as such anymore post apartheid, please go, have a look and fix every government form, job application, and everything else that requires you to identify as a certain group in order to get anything in this country & world.

With respect, this “colored” classification is just another way to keep Black people divided. Most “colored” people in the U.S. would be seen as Black. Period. It seems that SA “colored” people are clinging to relative whiteness.

THE ANC govt kept the National Party Race Classification Act. We fought as black because we were oppressed as black. After 1994, the ANC enforced the Race Classification and started marginalizing and discriminating against our people. Check any SA official form. You still have to state your race. RACISM IS ALIVE IN SA. APARTHEID ONLY CHANGED MANAGEMENT

Does that official form have a penalty attached that forces you to choose one or other racial classification? Since 1994 I have chosen other, and have written Klingon... It's 2020 and guess what I still write klingon... Now you try... It's liberating!

As an African American this is a bit confusing to me. Some of the people in the video look just like my family. In the US they're Black. Whether light-skinned or dark-skinned they are black Americans. Is this topic more about culture?

Coloured people were classified by the (apartheid) government of the day as those that do not fall into the major categories of Black or White. White meaning of European descent and Black being of local tribal stock. So, if you were of mixed descent you were Coloured. The mix can be any permutation from indigenous to European, Indian, Chinese, Indonesian Arabian, etc. Although Coloureds are acknowledged as Black, they (we) are simultaneously still officially classified as a separate "race". There is a tentative common Coloured culture that inevitably developed. However, many (older) people find it hard to accept the label, as it was artificially imposed. A modern-day mix between Black and White would not necessarily result in a Coloured child, as it may be missing the cultural and historical relationship.
There are other categorisations, such as Indian and Chinese (Asian). The post-apartheid government still maintains the race classifications.

The Population Registration Act of 1950 required that each inhabitant of South Africa be classified and registered in accordance with his or her racial characteristics as part of the system of apartheid...apartheid is dead...the word coloured is dead.

      @jasonjumat5070 5 лет назад +6

@ Shingo I agree that the actress with long hair is abviously not khoi. And not black but have far greater mix between malay-european blood than from Africa.
Yes. I too am a coloured.
What a lot of people especially black south africans ( not everyone) keep not acknowleging is that these "mixed" people are a new RACE in it's own right and not simply "MIXED".
For example Trevor Noah is mixed. And he is black. Why? Because he grew up as a black. Not as a coloured.
Just because someone "looks" coloured doesn't make him coloured.
In other words there are mixed people all over the world. But there are only COLOUREDS in southern africa.
They are a DISTINCT mixed group of people just like xhosa is distinct from other black groups of people.
You will probably not agree but anyone obiously thinking about it will realize it.
It is true that they are not Khoisan completely. Neither black. Neither white.
They are referred to as COLOURED as they are too DIVERSE to "put into a group".
They are not in the "group" of black people (which is on the far left) neither white (which is on the far right) but everything and anything in between.
Plus they have a language not shared by other peoples off course (accept for the white afrikers) but they don't share the same cultures at all.
Then I also want to address your commenter @ Shingo.
I have no idea why some south africans are as rude AGAINST other peoples for no legitimate reason. It speaks at the end of the day more about the person who displays so much hate than it says about the person/ people being hated.
What possibly, in God's eyes is better about a person talking bad/ ill about others only to make such person a "better/superior" person?
@ Catherine Sterling At least my parents whom you speak so badly about taught me manners.
And I am grateful for it.
I hope you find peace @ Catherine Sterling talking bad about others as if they are animals. And I hope God created you far more superior compared the rest of all other people. And I hope you or any person have never been raped in your superior family and I hope YOUR God to keep you as superior against others for as long possible.
      Possibly forever.
      Go well.

@@jasonjumat5070 South African black people don't have a problem with coloureds, what pisses us off is Malay and Indian descendants claiming to be native South Africans because they have 5% or more Khoisan blood in them. In fact us black Africans have Co existed with the Khoi and San for centuries before your race was born or even existed. We've been here for centuries, you find coloured people who were lied to during Apartheid by propaganda and told they're better than us because of their light skin and they still show those traits. We don't hate them, but it's pretty hard to acknowledge a Malaysian or Indian claiming to be a native African. Black people are also Khoisan descendants, as seen by their language like Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho which merged the language of the Khoisan people with the black South African population. In such a case, we also have a right to call ourselves coloured. We also have a problem of people trying to separate and put Khoisan people as a different race from black when they are pure Africans. Yeah they are light skinned, but not all of them had light features. Some were as black as the black people anywhere...
You have a right to name yourself whatever you want and it's fine. Another issue is, us Black Africans have always come last in South Africa, ever since colonialism and then apartheid. For about 400 years we've been kicked around. Now we're tired and want to look out for our own and not any other, we have to become selfish to succeed, they fact that black people have been tolerant is what led to their downfall. Now we are taking a stance and telling people that this is our land and we want it back. We're tired of getting kicked around and we won't stop until we get back what is ours for our future generations to come. If coloured wants to be part of that revolution, they're welcome. But if they still see themselves as anything better than us. Then I'm sorry, we also won't consider them part of us but against us. Being a coloured is also not a race, I'd call it a culture even. Because there are some black coloureds people and there are some who aren't. People of Madagascar are also mixed like you guys and we're happy with them. They're our brothers and sisters and the fact that they're mixed is insignificant because they acknowledge their Africa-Ness. And they are also descendants of our old ancestors who went to Madagascar and mixed with the people there.
They also don't show extreme dislike like you guys being called black because they know that's how they are seen worldwide. You guys hate black people too much you don't want anything associating you to them. And that's fine but don't be surprised if we don't treat you like our own either. We'll treat you the same way we treat white people, as outsiders who don't belong in Africa.
