I had a teacher who would put us in the same groups every time, and every time they would make me do all the work. So at the end of the year we had a group project, and I talked to my group and split up the work, and then I went over to my teacher and I said "here's how we split up the work. I would like to only be graded for my portion of the project." And she agreed. So I got an A, and the rest didn't even follow the directions.

I was always this person in group projects. As a teacher I always made sure that students had to put down who did what and they got individual scores because I know how unfair it feels if that is not the case. I also liked to play around with how I divided the groups. My favorite thing to do was, as soon as I knew a class well enough to know who did the work and who did not, put all the kids together that worked hard and put the worst slackers together. It was amazing to see the first group get to work right away and the latter group slowly realizing after 15 minutes that no one in the group was going to do the work for them and they actually had to go and start doing something themselves...

I've never had a group project go well.
I think the one that hurt the most was the time one of the group members said, "I'll edit it all together!" She didn't show it to the rest of us before handing it in, so we didn't know what she'd done to our work until it was too late. My section, which didn't really need much (if any) editing in the first place, was reduced to incoherent garbage that I could barely recognize.
It was horrifying and mortifying. It's been YEARS and I still cringe when I think about it.

I always asked the teacher if I could be alone because I tended to be stuck doing everything. They generally obliged (thank God) but on the rare occasion I was with a group I always made sure I was with people I was familiar with, and we all had our individual sections to work on. I was usually the researcher because I knew how to find the best sources for whatever topic we were doing while everyone else would delegate who did which slides based on their various skill levels. All-and-all I'm happy I made it out of high school with pretty understanding teachers.

Once I had to do a group presentation with two friends. One of them dropped out of the class pretty much right after we got the assignment so we ended up getting a girl in who had been sick when the groups were formed. She kept on spouting nonsense and telling us how much she knew about the subject while my friend and I did the work. We made it easy for her. I asked her to just send me her part as notes I would format it to fit in the presentation. She claimed she couldn't even open a PDF file. I asked her to give me her notes on paper. Presentation day came around and my friend was sick, but had sent me all her notes which were very comprehensive so I had no issue taking over her part. The other girl didn't show. no message, no notes, nothing. So there I was, a group of one. I presented. I actually did know the subject so I could at least give a basic rundown of her part, but I made it very clear that she had contributed nothing and the mostly empty slides spoke for themselves. Afterwards my teacher came up to me and asked if that girl had contributed in any way at all. I said no. She had to write an essay to make up for it, while I got an A.

Once I was the only one who worked on the project while my group did nothing. All of the other groups were fine but mine wasn’t. My teacher quickly found out about me doing all the work but he already gave us all the max grade. Next time though, he changed things for the next group project. In the next group project, I was in a new group. He had us fill in a paper about who did what. Surprisingly, the people in my new group did a decent amount of work. I was shown the work of the people I worked with in the project before and, all I can say is: it… could have used some “improvements”. (It wasn’t good-)
In conclusion, I’m happy about the change.

Then, neither of them would answer their phones when I tried to call them. So, out of the fear of failing, I did the whole thing myself. This is so relatable. For my degree we had a group assignment for one of the subjects. We had an individual assignment that had we were separately graded on which was making an academic poster. Our group assignment was to summarise all of our posters in the group. There were 5 of us in the group. I had someone in my group literally just send me her poster, saying that she was too sick to write a summary, so she didn’t contribute anything to the group assignment at all. The others sent me summaries of their posters that probably would have failed or barely passed, and also only a couple of days before it was due after originally saying they’d send it weeks earlier. I basically worked on it non-stop from when they finally sent me the work as I didn’t want my GPA to drop because of them. I sent it to them with hours to spare after basically getting no sleep to finish it, asked if they wanted to change anything to contribute, they all said no. I ended up getting us an extremely high grade and excellent feedback, and I never even got a thank you from any of them.

Just had one of these a few days ago. I got the classic group of adolescent males who play first person shooters the entire time. In a ten paragraph essay, where each paragraph had to be 10-15 sentences, I wrote all but TWO FREAKING SENTENCES. And those two sentences were so incoherent that I was stumbling over myself to get them to string together into something slightly grammatically correct when we presented. I ended up presenting more than anybody else as well of course, and being the only one who could put together a decent argument. All in all, I did actually have fun. I have a tendency to enjoy control and others relying on me. Still, when we got to rank our partners out of ten, you can guess that they didn't get a very high score.

So I'm actually in a weird situation right now. Tomorrow, the first part of a big group project has to be given to the teacher. The teams were NOT made by the teacher, and me being who I am, I didn't dare ask anyone to be in their team. Then, yesterday, a student came up to me, he explained that he also didn't have a team, and suggested that we could be together. I accepted. He had already started and it's clear that he likes to be the one writing the project.
The issue is, he's...kind of bad at writing. His sentences are sometimes gramatically incorrect, he does many spelling mistakes and he almost never uses pronouns(which makes it a little paintful to read, as you can imagine). Not as bad as your teamates, I'm sure, but less than ideal nonetheless. Still, if he didn't have more initiative than I do, I'd be in a terrible situation, so I'm trying to improve his sentences without completely changing their meaning or rewriting the whole thing, even if I know it would be better.

learning the art of influence without authority is something important in these situations. I myself relate to this tons back in middle school and freshman year of high-school as being "the gifted child" (really am not smart just am the only one who doesn't watch youtube, play snake, etc. in class) and would have all the work dumped on me by others. If they did help it was purposefully half-assed on their part so they could get away with the least amount of work. What you'll likely learn by doing things such as interning and community service is that not everyone is a leader and people tend to resent control freaks and like what they contribute to be praised.
This was at least my experience (graduated from high school now) here. When taking a group, don't assert control. Instead try to observe your group members and bring up a common objective (in this case a grade) that all the students likely want. That will probably be enough to entice about 40% of the group as long as you make it clear that you only do your part of the project. Once you have those people at least promising to do a small portion I would suggest keeping tabs with them during classes to check on work (aka doing their job) and passively keeping them on task if not (people will resent someone who is too watchful so don't be obsessive.) For the remainder of the group there is not much I can say here, they likely are doing tiktoks in the corner all class after all. You'll almost certainly get nowhere and they'll manipulate you to do the work anyway with social status and blame placing (or getting friendly with you.) Best you can do with that type is optimistically getting them out of your group or to have contribution parts in the final grade as it's impossible to force them unless you have authority (which you don't and don't abuse your teacher to make them either, only makes it worse.) You'll learn in sales and business alike that those people are unavoidable but they aren't the ones who will have the most success in the future so you can at least cope with that. Just practicing basic management skills means you are doing great in the eyes of society.

my worst group project was an in class assignment in health (my least favourite subject). We had two lessons to work on a 10 slide powerpoint. I completed 3 of the slides before realising that the other 3 members of my group had spent the entire time just posing photos of random emojis and piles of *white powder*** on the first page. Made a duplicate of the powerpoint and finished it that night before handing it in making sure that the teacher knew it was personally mine. The morning it was due one of the girls came up to me and told me off for not finishing the group assignment. I told her that I simply forgot and she freaked out. In group projects, I was often the one given barely any of the work, ideas that were almost always ignored or immediately dismissed (sometimes my ideas were way better, but they never listened to them well or long enough to put them into play), stuck recording the websites they found information, reading slides without necessarily understanding what they are talking about so not being able to explain them in more depth, copying the papers of different group members because they didn't want to explain anything so I could take my own...
I took advantage of every time I could sneak being a group of one I could get.

Projects work so much better for me when I work alone, and the issue is people always want to work with me on every assignment because I get them a good grade. So I have to tell them what to write on their paper and wait for them to finish writing before I can continue or else they get mad. One person in my class literally ditched someone who wanted to work with them so they could work with me, and I’m over here like “please just let me do it alone pleaseee” but it’s to late now. Now I have to spend a lot of time making ice cream with them and we could just buy ice cream and mix it in 🤦🏼‍♀️. I’m so sick of school right now.

I remember one time, we split the workload in the way that we would all choose a separate subtopic from one big topic to preform on (this would make most of everyone's separate grade depend on only their part of the project, so dw, I didn't ruin anyone else's grade). I did the bare minimum and didn't even fully follow the directions, but I still scored better than all of my group's other members because apparently I'm a good improviser and public speaker. Still cringe about that to this day, and still feel really bad for the other group members.

It was extra annoying because we had already split the project up into different sections and I had agreed to take the most work out of that.

100% In 4th grade, I did a group project, and I did literally all the work. Everyone was supposed to bring research, and like 3out of 7 did. Next, they all didn't want to do the ppt, so I got stuck to do it. My only condition was they get all their assigned topic's scripts to me by Friday, and no one did. I kept messaging everyone. So I had to do their parts the whole weekend, and no time to do the ppt. Normally so many people were online, but they were prob just ignoring me. I was basically harassing them when I kept spamming for their parts. Eventually, it's the day before, and still, like 2 people gave me their parts, and I literally had to re-write everything. My mom helped me out with the ppt, and one of my group mates actually got mad at me, id remember why, but I was super emotional, and I cried for 2 hours. I sent a loooooooong msg to the gc, I left, and whatever. When I got to school the next day, the grp members literally rushed towards me and asked about the project. I said it's done, and I came with printed parts of their script. I distributed it to everyone, and helped them memorize. Some people didn't bother, so I was really angry. I just told the teacher what happened, and I'm just sad bc 2 of them were nice to me b4.

I’ve had many terrible experiences with group projects
3rd grade. It was a group of 4 people, including me. Our project had to be 12 slides long split equally. I don’t remember the subject, but all I know is this caused be some emotional damage. We were supposed to get together for 30min per day for an entire week; which; if it was just me doing this it would’ve taken 2 days. Person 1: didn’t even come to school that week and on presentation day scolded ME for not doing his part (as I was the only one who had ever made an A in this group) I told him he could’ve logged into the school computer we’re aloud to take home and do the work but he said, “Are. You. DUMB??? I don’t have WIFI at home.” And I was like “you don’t need WiFi to get on google slides, and he was like “Bro shut up, girl” then grabbed my arm and shoved me onto the ground. Then during the presentation he said he had done his work and mine so I only got half the credit. And after he got our grades he smirked at me and said “I told you to shut up and you didn’t.” He waved the paper that said A- and I grabbed it and ripped it in half, threw it in the trash and smacked him on the arm. Person 2: he actually did quite a bit of work but it wasn’t detailed and it was sloppy. I ended up editing it but overall he deserved a B+. Person 3: was on vacation the entire time. Not even there on presentation day.
P.s when I went to the principals office for smacking him on the arm I explained everything to him, he understood but he couldn’t change my grade, but I received a warning.

Also the boy yelled at you for not doing HIS part, but then claimed he did both HIS part AND YOURS- that’s a contradiction. DID NOBODY NOTICE? And besides, you could have proved your innocence if that’s how it played out.
Additionally, if the principal understood.. and YOU got a warning- did the boy face no consequence whatsoever?
Btw there’s a history tab in a lot of google services, not sure about slides tho, that show who worked on what and when.. evidence!!! For next time

My friend did great as always, i did my part too and received an e-mail saying "I'm so sorry but my part got accidentally deleted, and I won't have time to do it again (it was at least a week before the presentation, and we gave her the easiest part), I would understand if you wanted to get me out of the project" , and I must say it was also written with a LOT OF mistakes. She was obviously trying to appeal because some people liked to think I was a nice nerd who helped people and all of that. So of course I awswered : "Okay I understand, good luck with your USB key and getting your files back, then I will erase your name from the project, have a nice day!"
For a few years , I forgot she was part of it at first, and if you're curious, my friend and I both got a perfect mark in the two subjects concerned. We didn't even need to do her part since it was already quite useless in the entire presentation...
Just to say, good luck people and don't be afraid of cosequences or whatever, don't let people use your work for their profit, eve if it ca be REALLY hard, at least be honest with them "yuo got a good mark, great, But I sure hope you're aware that you didn't do anything at all"

Honestly how it is. As someone who works better alone this is so true haha. I did have one teacher in high school though he knew that there was a student in my group who was making it hard for my friend and I(it was the three of us in the group) and he mentioned to me how he knew how hard we worked(we were doing it from a shared Google Doc and copied that information of the assignment to a new Doc and such. I'm not sure how he knew other than maybe she had not done work before or he saw how frustrating this girl was being), and so forth. I don't remember if he gave extra time but it was nice to see that he knew. He wasn't against when I decided to work alone either which I appreciated as well lol. Teachers should be like this more often. Always let you choose how you want to work at something. Anyway, sorry. This is long haha.

I have four friends in my class, but what’s really annoying about this is that when we need to be in a group more than 5. So we’ll be stuck with an extra person that doesn’t know how to do anything and needs help with every single detail.

My friend an I were in a group with all the immature boys for a religion project where you were supposed to choose someone that inspires you (they chose the creator of coca-cola) and we could luckily become a group of 2, two weeks before it was due, I was so relieved because their presentation was shit and they had chosen Messi last minute
    we chose Harriet Tubman :))

Good Thing Is That In My Class We Aren't Lazy And We All Actually Listen And Help Each Others At Group Projects, I Told My Parents My Classmates Were Nice
And Welcoming But The Only Reason I Wanna Change To Another School Next Year Is That I Don't Have Close Friends on The School I'm Attending This Point of Time.

This is VERY reliable, in my class they refer me as someone who can do all the work without them doing anything, and if i ask them they be like:" Oh! Ok ok ok" then they came out without only the half off the part (which isn't even ALOT), so i can continue it and most of the time the professors assign me with someone i absolutely DESPISE, just to make up our "relationship", which cannot be undone if you made an good first impression by me, and then find you intressing, and with a condition that i don't know of i always end up crying, and saying that we should work together, when literally i have to say word per word what they have to do, no not in sentence, but i have to explain the whole that they got to do. Although i sometimes want to take the lead it is not much of a choice either because if i gave the lead role to someone else they just say a sentence of what we have to do and give the lead "role" to someone else while they do their sh^ts and that is why i don't feel safe anywhere in anytime and anymore, and i have to deal with a sh^t like paranoia

Can relate! I hate when I teacher puts me with someone I dont like because "You don't get to chose who you work with in the ReAL wORld". Then when I put the effort in to work with them and they ignore me, both the teacher and partner blame me!

I can tell you put a lot of thought and effort into this video. The singing and rhyming into such relatable content cuz that's how I felt in group projects. I even did research for 4 other kids in our 8th grade project, too much to go into, but your song pretty well covered why they didn't do near the amount of work I did. You could be my work partner for any presentation any day, even though I'm already finished with my Bachelors, but if it was during high school or college, I'd be your partner. By the amount of effort you put in these videos, I can tell I wouldn't mind you being controlling or demanding either because it's a good way of controlling someone to better themselves.
