I love stuff like this. I was barely an adolescent and it’s hard to explain, but you’re right. This music video and song just captures the early 2000s.
My early 2000's was at a parents suburban house when they were on away (in Scotland we call it an empty) this song playing on the kind of cable/satellite TV channel nobody watches now, alcohol with some shitty mixer, feeling badass in my new expensive as hell, baggy as hell skater jeans with boarder shoes, even though I didn't skateboard, somebody in the garden shed with some hashish, and an underlying conviction that this kind of music and style was going to take over the world forever, this was music now and clothes now... and that would never change!
It specifically reminds me of the summer of 2001. I was a 13-year-old skateboarder back then (I'm 31 now), and I went to a skate demo at a local skate part, where Eric Koston signed my Eric Koston 2s (those were the skate shoes I wore at that time). Good memories!

@EmperorOfFresno - I was born in '85 and i've always said there was something magical from 1999-2002. I would discover 2-3 amazing bands every week in those few years and I never dreamed how depressing pop culture would become after that. Movies, music, video games, sports, comics, toys, and society in general all went straight down.
Oh man this takes me back to when I was 10-11 years old... I remember hearing it and thinking it was the coolest thing ever but now that I'm 30 years old I realize how ahead of its time it was. The band might not be that famous but this cover was a total success and considering the original song was by Michael Jackson, you either screw up and be hated on for it or you actually make the cover good and making it good was what this band did so in my humble opinion, that's something to behold.
Now THIS is how you do a cover song!!! I'm a 43yr old black woman and I've LOVED this song since the first time I heard it. Kudos to them. I hope they're still making music

If you're going to cover a masterpiece you should make it your own...and you better do a good job while you're at it ! These guys knocked it out of the park ! Superb version of this song, superb music video to accompany it !
I think they didn't get enough support from their label. They should have been featured on more films and promotions to get their name out there. The band and their songs were solid gold, but they didn't quite fit with the nu-metal of the time. They should have been pushed toward the indie/alternative scene circles.
The difference between a legit cover and a gentrification is authenticity and respect to the original source material. And these dude were 1) true to themselves and 2) obviously huge MJ fans. As far as I can tell, that's why this track still gets respect.
Yeah, MTV is probably one of the worst channels on TV nowadays? It's not even a shell of its former self. Better than the original no disrespect to Michael
definitely not better than the original though, the guitar dont fit with the annie part while michaels whole song fit with the lyrics amazingly well
and the vocals are just not fit for the song with the accent so although this is remarkable, it is not better.
and calling a song that took the lyrics and remade it better than the original is a bit shameful.

Ong!!!! 😂
Peak for music
The 90s were bomb too. It started going downhill after the financial collapse in 2008
@EmperorOfFresno - I was born in '85 and i've always said there was something magical from 1999-2002. I would discover 2-3 amazing bands every week in those few years and I never dreamed how depressing pop culture would become after that. Movies, music, video games, sports, comics, toys, and society in general all went straight down.
the golden days of turning on the radio and hearing a hit no matter the genre.

We're all wearing masks
Oh man this takes me back to when I was 10-11 years old... I remember hearing it and thinking it was the coolest thing ever but now that I'm 30 years old I realize how ahead of its time it was. The band might not be that famous but this cover was a total success and considering the original song was by Michael Jackson, you either screw up and be hated on for it or you actually make the cover good and making it good was what this band did so in my humble opinion, that's something to behold.
With a hit like that and they were not becoming that popular... Strange
I used to love waking up early before school so I could watch music videos on vh1 and mtv.
micheal jackson song mate
I AM 11 MY DAD TOLD ME ABOUT THIS
Wicked
Now THIS is how you do a cover song!!! I'm a 43yr old black woman and I've LOVED this song since the first time I heard it. Kudos to them. I hope they're still making music
the original is slightly better imo
Same here, we was loving this in HS!! Was on the same playlist with DMX and Jayz
I'm 67 & love it.
Glee is better
why you need to point out your age gender and skin color?
No band could ever do this song nearly as good.
That cymbal work is legendary.
Yeah man the drumming is by far the best part.
So easy yet so good
Ron Gon It's nice but some of it just doesn't fit in my opinion.
IKR
Can confirm. Source- am drummer.
This song will be forever be one of the head-bangingest, funk-rockiest covers to ever grace our ears
I love how much the Bass player is feeling himself and into it.
Lol I agree
Yeah, I'm a bassist. That's a smooth bass line.
He has his own channel on YT too, fantastic bassist and does a bass break down on a couple of songs from AAF's catalogue. Tye Zamora is his name.
He is awesome live too. He really carries the stage presence. Probably the coolest bass player I’ve ever seen. In my opinion anyway.
@@kwizzeh I feel he carried the band, that's for sure. Without him, they sound burned out.
One of the best covers of all time. Underappreciated at the time of release, is finally getting love. Not too shabby AAF.
Y'all remember when this song took over the radio station? Loved every second of it.
I was too young (13) to know MJ, so this was the only Smooth Criminal I knew. But yes, this was all over the radio/TRL.
@@hannahremmel955013 was not too young. I knew of smooth criminal since I was like 7. What rock were you living under in 2001.
It took it over again where I’m from. I never heard the song. And it’s played everyday on the radio for the past 2 month. Shits a banger
This song was always blasting back in the day.
I always liked this song, but with no one in my house liking Michal Jackson, I didn't know that he sung it first
Did you pay someone in youtube staff to appear as top comment in every single video?
2001 I worked in a web cafe. Someone was ALWAYS blasting this song from Napster.
True
Summer 2001. Spent the whole time playing Diablo 2 with MTV on in the background. Every song from the rotation is burned into my mind forever.
The kid dancing alone with his face mask was ahead of its time.
The Mandela effect ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great tribute to the now late MJ. This cover is really passionate, you can tell the guys in the band loved his music.
It is a great tribute to him but this also came out before he I died I believe
@@kristiesanborn3823 yep it did, MJ also listened to it and gave his approval :D
this is not a tribute to him... this song came out before he died. And it were never meant as a tribute to him.
remember the stuff with the kids
I know he passed after but it shows a lot of respect to cover another artist is what I meant
where did these guys go? ant farm are you o.k. tell me are you o.k.?
Ant farm are u ok? Would you tell us that you're okay???
They had terrible accident (bus driver died), they split up, they had problem with a record label, they got ``together`` again, but they were never the same. So they are not ok
Wow, really? That's f**kin awful :(

This album got me through my parents divorce in high-school around 2001. I straight played the sound off it in my portable cd player for years. My favorite song on the album was actually Stranded! Great album, 20 years later I can say it still hits hard!
This song is getting me through my divorce ❤

the fact that I'm listening to this on New year's Eve 2016 just is fucking hilarious.
the bass player is the best one in the band...

If you're going to cover a masterpiece you should make it your own...and you better do a good job while you're at it ! These guys knocked it out of the park ! Superb version of this song, superb music video to accompany it !
The whole album was a master piece....bassist and the drummer were on fire thru and thru
I've always felt that way about Presidents of the United States of America's first album...so excellent
I think they didn't get enough support from their label. They should have been featured on more films and promotions to get their name out there. The band and their songs were solid gold, but they didn't quite fit with the nu-metal of the time. They should have been pushed toward the indie/alternative scene circles.
I was in 8th grade when the album came out and I asked my dad to buy it for me. He said no because I wouldn't like it. Still never listened to it.
That sounds painful.
@@glennelson8017 And Mother May I?, and Silverchair, and Geggy Tah, and I really want to say Marcy Playground, but I won't.

The difference between a legit cover and a gentrification is authenticity and respect to the original source material. And these dude were 1) true to themselves and 2) obviously huge MJ fans. As far as I can tell, that's why this track still gets respect.
kolkenad god, you are cancer in society.
@@zerotodona1495 Feel better now?
Stop using the word gentrification
Those people saying it’s a gentrification aren’t wrong. They just spelled djentrification wrong.
@@zerotodona1495 the fuck how and why is he?
this is exactly how a cover should be done. looking back ..im actually impressed and amazing at how well done this was all around
yeah, like a cover in a different genre is actually the coolest thing, this is why AAF executed this so well :)
It took me years to appreciate this cover, but I'm glad I didn't forget about it. You're right, they executed it perfectly.
it really is perfect
And not just musically, EVERYTHING about this video is an amazing homage to the King of Pop!
Damn, I remember listening to this back when I was in high school. Every morning on the MTV countdown....Man those were the good ol' days
Yeah, MTV is probably one of the worst channels on TV nowadays? It's not even a shell of its former self. With shows like teen mom and catfish, it represents a generation that thrives on hugs and words of encouragement in order to feel loved. Bring back head bangers ball, 120 minutes, spring break, unplugged etc.
@@flip97gt "Bring back head bangers ball, 120 minutes, spring break, unplugged etc."

Hell Yeah September 2024 😎👍🇨🇦
Yup😅
This isn't ever not going to be a banger.
Yo!
This cover had no business being this fire. MJ is always going to be moment so the fact both versions exist is actually incredible.
Fact lpl
Right? And didnt know this was a cover until 6 months hearing this when it first came out
Two opposites can be true at once.
Yeah, but AAF doesn't have any pedophiles in their band. Can't say the same for MJ.
My older brother was a teenager in the early 2000s and he used to blast this my entire childhood. Everything about the band, the vocals, the guitar riffs, the drums; everything is so impactful and I still listen to this constantly, right now in my 20s lol
@Recite-God-Purify-Me-Each-Second shut up
Haha 😂 hell yea
I was a Teenager in the early 2000s now im 35 hahaha
Byeeeee can't sit with us
That era was fire for all kinds of music. I still blast this all the time now 😂
gotta love it when a band goes all in and *goes* for it. No self-consciousness, total commitment.
Best cover ever done
This band gives this song, so much power.
When they change keys, and launch into the pre-chorus, "Annie are you okay?",
It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up...
Just saw these guys live a couple weeks ago and they still put on one hell of a show 🔥
いいなー!
We saw them a few years back. 🔥🔥🔥
they still together wow cool
Holy shit they still tour???
this is so good but you must hear “Whispering Wolf” or “The Wave” by SLT 🎧🤘🎶
I miss this era lol. Everyone was just having fun and enjoying life.
Back when punk/grunge bands were actually punk/grunge that didn't give a sh*t about hurting feelings or being mainstream and just wanted to make good music.
